From NYU Law’s Native American Law Students Association:

It’s my pleasure to invite you to the inaugural event hosted by NYU School of Law Native American Law Students Association: a staged reading of the play Waaxe’s Law, based on Standing Bear v. Crook (1879). Waaxe’s Law deals with a habeas trial in the 1870s that addressed the question: were Ponca Indians “persons” under the law or were they ineligible for habeas relief? The play, based on the trial transcript, raises issues of transformative moments of legal history that should be acknowledged in the annals of our country’s civil rights struggles.
