AABANY Announces New Career Placement Committee

AABANY is pleased to announce the formation of its new Career Placement Committee. The primary purpose of the Career Placement Committee is to match qualified AABANY members with available legal job positions. To accomplish this, the Career Placement Committee is launching the AABANY Career Exchange which will serve as a clearinghouse for all legal positions brought to its attention and will proactively seek to match qualified AABANY candidates with such open positions. To this end, the Career Placement Committee is actively seeking information regarding open legal positions. If you are aware of any such positions please email the Career Placement Committee co-chairs (Robert Leung, Michael Park and Gurinder Singh) at [email protected].

In addition, the Career Placement Committee is also interested in getting to know AABANY members who are currently seeking or considering seeking a new position. It is important for the Career Placement Committee to understand the skill sets, special expertise and interests of AABANY members currently conducting or thinking about a job search in order to be able to best match qualified candidates with particular open positions. To facilitate the process, the Career Placement Committee will kickoff the AABANY Career Exchange by holding 15-minute informational one-on-one meetings with interested AABANY members at the AABANY 2013 Fall Conference / NAPABA Northeast Regional Conference on September 21, 2013 (www.napaba-ne.aabany.org ). Feel free to bring a resume. All questions and inquiries will be kept strictly confidential.

NAPABA SEEKS AT-LARGE BOARD MEMBER CANDIDATES — DEADLINE AUGUST 30

This year, the NAPABA Board of Governors will appoint two At-Large Board Members to serve a two-year term that will begin in the 2013-2014 bar year.

The NAPABA Nominating and Elections Committee invites all members in good standing to submit their names and statements as candidates for At-Large Board Member to Pia Rivera at [email protected] on or before August 30, 2013.

NAPABA OFFICERS ELECTIONS — DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 15

NAPABA is proud to announce its slate of candidates for officer positions for 2013-2014, which is available here. Ballots were sent by email to all members and is included in the Election Edition of the NAPABA Lawyer. All ballot submissions must be received by 11:59 pm PDT on Sunday, September 15, 2013.

Volunteers needed for August 22nd Civil Disobedience Actions at Varick Street Detention Center

We have been informed by NYIC (New York Immigration Coalition) that there is a critical need for legal observers for the civil disobedience actions on August 22 outside of the Varick Street Detention Center. The CD Actions will occur around 12:30 PM.  Below is more information regarding the civil disobedience actions:

Highlighting our Broken Immigration System (August 22 @ 11AM – 1PM with Civil Disobedience Actions around 12:30PM/ Varick Street Detention Center)
 
  • What: With every passing day that the House fails to act, 1100 people are deported.  Our families and communities continue to suffer as a result of a broken immigration system and the Republican House dragging their feet.
  • What do we want: John Boehner to act NOW to keep our families together. The event will start with a Jericho Walk that will escalate with 20+ people engaged in civil disobedience (blocking traffic and entrance to detention center). Supporters who do not want to be arrested will line the sidewalk chanting, holding signs and bearing witness.CD training (likely day before) and legal support will be provided. Negotiations with the NYPD are underway (aiming for dismissal of any charges). 
Please consider supporting this event by either showing up and cheering those who will be engaging in civil disobedience; engaging in civil disobedience (arrestees); or volunteering to be a legal observer!  If anyone is interested in participating, please contact Christina Chang, Advocacy & Organizing Coordinator at MinKwon Center for Community Action at [email protected] or 718.460.5600.
 
All, this is a friendly reminder to RSVP to participate in the civil disobedience action outside Varick St Detention Center on Aug. 22 at NOON. For those who would like to participate but do not wish to face arrest, you can participate in the direct action only.

Please note there will be a training for Civil Disobedience participants on Monday, August 19th at 2 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church located at 619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street, New York, NY 10022. Please RSVP to [email protected] and [email protected].

AABANY asks: Have you served as a judicial clerk?

Clerking is an invaluable experience that not only provides excellent practical skills training but also enables you to build close relationships with judges and fellow clerks. For the benefit of our members, AABANY will be holding two information sessions on judicial clerkships in October 2013, possibly one focusing on federal clerkships and the other on state clerkships (more details to come). We would like these sessions to be as robust as possible, and to that end, we’d like to compile a list of all AABANY members who are former clerks to create an informal mentoring circle and to invite to speak at the sessions. If you have clerked for a either a state or federal judge (not an internship/externship), please contact Lina Zhou at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your help!

On Thursday, August 8, AABANY held the third in its series of “Get to Know AABANY” Happy Hours for 2013, this time co-sponsored by the Judiciary, Young Lawyers and Membership Committees. Many members and friends gathered at O’Nieals on Grand Street, near Chinatown, to connect, re-connect and make new connections. The first thirty that came to O’Nieals got a free drink. Light appetizers were passed around for those in our party. 

Among those in attendance were Judiciary Committee Co-Chairs Theo Cheng and James Chou, and Young Lawyers Committee Co-Chair Liz Mo. Judy Kim, Chair of the Membership Committee attended. Also there was Michael Yim, candidate for NAPABA Vice President of Programs and Operations, handing out campaign stickers that had his name and Han Choi’s name on them. Han Choi is candidate for NAPABA President-elect. Both Han and Michael received AABANY’s endorsement in the NAPABA election.

AABANY Announces NAPABA Election and Endorsements.

Dear AABANY Members & Friends,

As you may know, AABANY is an affiliate of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (“NAPABA”).  All dues paying members of AABANY as of August 1, 2013 are NAPABA members and have the right to vote in the upcoming NAPABA election, except for student members who are not voting members of AABANY and thus not eligible to vote in the election. Note that AABANY Sponsor Members (those who joined through sponsorship of the Annual Dinner) are voting members of AABANY and thus eligible to vote in the election.

Certain NAPABA candidates in this year’s NAPABA election reached out to AABANY seeking its endorsement. These candidates were afforded the opportunity to address AABANY’s Board and answer various questions from our Board members.  After due deliberation and consideration by the Board of each of the candidate’s presentations, AABANY is pleased to announce its endorsement of, and recommendation that its members and friends vote for, the following candidates (click name to view candidate’s statement):
