First Annual Corporation Counsel Clerkship – New York City Law Department
The New York City Law Department is now seeking applications for its first annual Corporation Counsel Clerkship, open to law students graduating in 2012. The recipient of this paid one- year post-graduate fellowship will work closely with the chief lawyer of the City of New York, the Corporation Counsel, as well as the NYC Law Department’s Executive Staff and senior attorneys, on legal issues pertaining to NYC governance and in the formulation and defense of significant policy issues. The recipient of the Clerkship will gain experience and insight into the overall operations and governance of New York City, and may also have the opportunity to work closely with the Mayor’s Office, the City Council and various City agencies.
Depending upon the interests of the recipient of the Clerkship, his or her responsibilities may include trial court level litigation, appellate work or counseling, and legislative drafting on matters involving significant policy initiatives in fields such as criminal or juvenile justice, the environment, elections, education, social welfare, municipal finance, land use and economic
development.Applicants must have a record of academic excellence and a demonstrable interest in urban affairs and governance. The successful candidate will be chosen by a committee of senior executives at the Law Department.

In addition, applicants must submit a statement of interest, of no more than 500 words, including a discussion of which divisions the applicant is most interested in. Apply to be a CUP Fellow
The Council of Urban Professionals (CUP) has announced its 2012 CUP Fellows Program. Applications are due by Friday, January 13.
The CUP Fellows Program develops leadership for professionals of color between the ages of 25 and 45 who seek to become powerful civic or public sector leaders.
Past CUP Fellows include PJ Kim, former candidate for New York City Council District 1. Of his experience as a 2009 CUP Fellow, he said:

AABANY Joins Diverse Bar Associations’ Press Release in Support of Judge LaPorte
On December 20, AABANY joined with other diverse bar associations in New York City in a press release responding to public statements made about Hon. Evelyn LaPorte. Judge LaPorte was criticized for her handling of the arraignment of Lamont Pride in November 2011. Pride was later arrested for his alleged involvement in the shooting death of NYPD Officer Peter Figoski.
The other bar associations that signed on to the press release are: Metropolitan Black Bar Association, Puerto Rican Bar Association, Nigerian Lawyers Association, South Asian Bar Association and Association of Black Women Attorneys. New York State Senator Eric Adams, of the 20th Senatorial District, in Brooklyn, NY also signed on to the press release.

This series, co-sponsored by more than a dozen leading test prep companies, was created to provide prospective law students with information on everything from preparing for the LSAT through being successful in the first year of law school. The program includes LSAT Preview Classes by five leading test prep companies – as well as panels with admissions representatives and law students from regional law schools and a Networking Fair with free classes and material giveaways.
Scholarship assistance will be provided as needed.

Passing along a reminder about the NY Immigration Coalition’s DREAM Fellowship. Deadline is Friday, Dec. 16. Here are the eligibility criteria:
- Be full time or part time CUNY students at the time of application with at least one semester of undergraduate studies remaining during the 2012 Spring semester;
- Have a proven interest in building community organizing skills and be able to commit 7 hours per week during the 2012 academic Spring semester;
- Have a proven track record of leadership and service in either academic and community settings;
- Be eligible under current version of the federal DREAM act.

AABANY Director and criminal defense attorney Vinoo Varghese was quoted in a front page article in the December 13 edition of Metro NY on the shooting of NYPD officer Peter Figoski. He spoke about the difficulty of extradition as a reason for alleged shooter Lamont Pride being allowed to walk free after a recent arrest.
