The ABA Criminal Justice Section has partnered with the ACLU, Families Against Mandatory Minimums, the Federal Defenders, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers to create Clemency Project 2014, an initiative to provide pro bono representation to incarcerated people in the Federal Penal System seeking sentence commutation–executive clemency–under the DOJ’s New Clemency Initiative.
You do not need to be a criminal law lawyer to help. Volunteering is easy and not terribly time consuming. Clemency Project 2014 has prepared a 2-hour training and streamlined process that identifies and acquires most of the documents that you will need to review a case. In total, it takes on average between 25-30 attorney-hours from receiving a case to preparing that case for clemency petition.
If you are interested in volunteering, please visit the Clemency Project 2014 website: www.clemencyproject2014.org. You may also contact Jonathan Gitlen at jonathan.gitlen@gmail.com, an attorney leading the Criminal Justice Section’s Clemency Representation Project, for any questions you might have.

Here is a third album of photos from the 2015 Fall Conference, Charting New Frontiers, held on Sept. 19 at Cleary, Gottlieb. This set includes shots from the Inaugural Diversity Career Fair and the Cocktail Reception at which Rocky Chin received this year’s Norman Lau Kee Trailblazer Award. Thanks to Pei-Ching Chang for these terrific photos!
Earlier this year, the Law Journal began seeking suggestions for
its first annual Diverse Attorneys of the Year honors. The response from
the legal community was immediate and enthusiastic, and it provided us
with a list of extremely accomplished and worthy attorneys from which to
choose. While the selection process was not easy, we feel this year’s
honorees indisputably are among the top legal talent in New Jersey.
AABANY congratulates Austin So, General Counsel/Heraeus, AABANY In-House Counsel Committee Co-Chair and NAPABA NE Regional Governor, for making the NJLJ list!

The 2015 class of honorees continues the BU40 legacy of excellence and leadership in both the legal and APA communities. This year’s BU40 honorees have vast and varied experiences — representing clients in nationwide high-stake and complex business litigation matters, investigating violations of federal securities laws, providing legal services to family and underrepresented farmers, serving as the senior counsel to a ranking member of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, and assistant general counsel for one of the nation’s oldest construction firms. NAPABA congratulates the 2015 Best Lawyers Under 40 award winners and looks forward to their future successes.
The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) is the national association of Asian Pacific American attorneys, judges, law professors, and law students. NAPABA represents the interests of over 40,000 attorneys and approximately 75 national, state, and local Asian Pacific American bar associations. Its members include solo practitioners, large firm lawyers, corporate counsel, legal services and non-profit attorneys, and lawyers serving at all levels of government.
NAPABA continues to be a leader in addressing civil rights issues confronting Asian Pacific American communities. Through its national network of committees and affiliates, NAPABA provides a strong voice for increased diversity of the federal and state judiciaries, advocates for equal opportunity in the workplace, works to eliminate hate crimes and anti-immigrant sentiment, and promotes the professional development of people of color in the legal profession.
NAPABA congratulates the newly-elected officers of the NAPABA Board of Governors for the 2015-16 board year. They will be sworn into office at the Installation Banquet held on Nov. 7, 2015, during the 27th Annual NAPABA Convention in New Orleans.
