Upgraded Judicial Candidate Voter Guide 2014
The official home page of the New York State Unified Court System. We hear more than three million cases a year involving almost every type of endeavor. We hear family matters, personal injury claims, commercial disputes, trust and estates issues, criminal cases, and landlord-tenant cases.
For the 2014 general election, the New York State Unified Court System has launched an upgraded non-partisan Judicial Voter Guide at www.nycourts.gov/vote allowing users to sort and filter the list of candidates in each county. The Voter Guide features information about judicial candidates on the ballot based on information provided by the state and county board of elections.
AABANY Applauds Hon. Alexander B. Jeong’s Appointment as First Asian Pacific American to Serve as Deputy Administrative Judge in New York Criminal Courts

NEW YORK – October 23, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is pleased to announce that on October 20, Chief Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti announced the appointment of Hon. Alexander B. Jeong as Deputy Administrative Judge of the New York Criminal Courts, effective immediately. Judge Jeong is the first Asian Pacific American to serve the Unified Court System in this capacity. In his new role, Judge Jeong will oversee one of the nation’s busiest courts, which has trial jurisdiction over misdemeanors and petty offenses and preliminary jurisdiction over felonies in New York City’s five boroughs.
Prior to his ascension to the bench, he served the Office of the Kings County District Attorney for over a decade, most recently as a bureau chief in the Office’s Criminal Court Bureau. Upon his appointment to the New York City Criminal Court bench in 2005, Judge Jeong joined the Unified Court System. He was reappointed to the Court in 2010 and designated acting Supreme Court Justice in 2012. Chief Administrative Judge Prudenti stated, “Alexander Jeong exemplifies the qualities we expect of our judges. We are fortunate to benefit from his vast expertise, unassailable integrity and strong management skills.”

Judge Jeong also serves as President of the Asian American Judges Association of New York. The association was honored at the Queens Asian Bar Association Annual Gala on September 18, and Judge Jeong accepted the award on its behalf.

The MBBA’s Community Service Committee Presents “Domestic Violence Forum and Call to Action Luncheon”

The Symposium will focus on the state of domestic violence today and serves as a Call to Action, where we will look at tangible action plans that we can do now to help eradicate domestic violence. The domestic violence workshop will be geared towards domestic violence service providers and the community at large. There will be a 10-15 minute presentation by representatives from victim service specialist; the police department; legal professionals; social workers; and the clergy.

Legal Services NYC Names Katrina Goyco One of Top 30 Pro Bono Lawyers of 2014 for Assisting Immigrant Victims of Domestic Violence

NEW YORK – October 20, 2014 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) is proud to announce that Government Service & Public Interest Committee Co-Chair Katrina Goyco has been named one of Legal Services NYC’s Top 30 Pro Bono Lawyers of 2014 for her tireless efforts on an AABANY U-Visa initiative for immigrant victims of domestic violence. Katrina will be honored at Legal Services NYC’s Volunteer Reception on Thursday, October 23, 2014, hosted by WilmerHale.
Launched by AABANY’s Government Service & Public Interest Committee in conjunction with Legal Services NYC, the U-Visa initiative began in June 2014 to provide immigration relief for low-income survivors of domestic violence. The initiative trained pro bono lawyers on the step-by-step process of U-Visa application, the first step to a naturalization path for undocumented victims of qualifying crimes, as well as how to work with victims of mental, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Ms. Goyco headed the efforts to match pre-screened survivors with attorneys and law students who could help them prepare their narratives and offer legal advice through the difficult-to-navigate path to citizenship.
“AABANY is fortunate to have someone as dedicated to the public interest as Katrina Goyco is to be among its members and its leadership,” says Executive Director Yang Chen. “When the Government Service and Public Interest Committee first brought this project to AABANY’s attention, it was received with much enthusiasm. Without the energy and dedication of Katrina as the Committee’s co-chair, the project would have just remained an idea. Through her efforts, the U-Visa project now helps many deserving members of the community get the legal assistance they need.
