AALDEF: Eleven States Must Now Provide Asian American Voters with Bilingual Ballots
From AALDEF’s Oct. 12 press release announcing important updates to jurisdictions across the country that are required by law to provide bilingual ballots:
For the first time South Asian languages were covered, in four jurisdictions, as well as Korean in New Jersey and Chinese in Massachusetts. The determinations also found a significant expansion in the number of jurisdictions required to provide Chinese, Filipino, and Vietnamese assistance.
Chinese and Filipino ballots must be provided in four more districts each, Indian and Vietnamese ballots must be provided in three more districts each, Korean ballots must be provided in one more district, and Bangladeshi will be required for the first time in Hamtramck city in Michigan.
“We’re ecstatic that more Asian Americans will be able to exercise their right to vote – and that the voting process will accommodate an increasingly diverse electorate,” said Glenn D. Magpantay, Director of the Democracy Program at the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF).

Board Member Vinoo Varghese has been invited for the third consecutive year to join the faculty of the Intensive Trial Advocacy Program (ITAP) at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. Taking place during the first two-weeks of January 2012, ITAP reaches its 29th consecutive year of teaching future lawyers trial advocacy skills. USCIS Announces Entrepreneurs in Residence Initiative
On October 11, 2001, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced an initiative on its website:
WASHINGTON – US. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Alejandro Mayorkas joined the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness in Pittsburgh to announce “Entrepreneurs in Residence." This new innovative initiative will utilize industry expertise to strengthen USCIS policies and practices surrounding immigrant investors, entrepreneurs and workers with specialized skills, knowledge, or abilities. Mayorkas announced the initiative at the Jobs Council’s High Growth Entrepreneurship Listening and Action Session at AlphaLab in Pittsburgh before the Council’s Quarterly meeting with President Obama.

Peggy Kuo Featured on PBS Series “Women, War & Peace”
AABANY member and 2010 honoree Peggy Kuo, General Counsel to OATH (Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings) and former Chief Hearing Officer for the New York Stock Exchange, was a prosecutor at the Hague. She prosecuted Serb soldiers who repeatedly raped Muslim women in Bosnia during the war in the former Yugoslovia and helped to create law that defined rape as a crime against humanity. She talks about her involvement in the case in part 1 of the PBS 5-part series “Women, War & Peace." The first part is entitled "I Came to Testify,” and it airs tonight, October 11, on Channel 13. Those who attended AABANY’s APA Heritage Month celebration of APA women attorneys and the arts, co-sponsored with Dewey & LeBoeuf and the Asian American Arts Alliance, might recall that Board member Clara Ohr, besides being a terrific lawyer, is a classically-trained pianist. If you would like to catch her performing live, you should attend Friday Evening Chamber Music at New York City Bar on Friday night, October 14, starting at 6 pm.
