Bryan Cave LLP has partnered with the NAPABA Law Foundation to offer the Bryan Cave / NLF Community Service Scholarship, which will provide a $2,500 scholarship award for one law student who is a summer law intern that works on issues on behalf of, or that benefits, the Asian Pacific American community. AALFNY Community Service Scholarships, Deadline Extended to Mar. 31
Each year, the Asian American Law Fund of New York awards up to three scholarships of up to $5,000 to law students that are committed to helping the Asian American community in New York. The Fund recognizes that at a time when money is tight, committing one’s time to our community service organizations can be a financial strain, especially when considering law school tuition and living expenses.
If you are a law student and are planning to work with a community service organization in the New York area during the summer 2015, you are eligible to apply. The completed Scholarship Application and all required materials must be postmarked by March 31, 2015. The recipients will be announced April 20, 2015. Click here to download the application.
4th Annual NAPABA Pro Bono & Public Interest Summit
Dear NAPABA members,
The Pro Bono Community Service Committee is pleased to invite you to the Pro Bono & Public Interest Summit on Thursday November 7 from 9-2 pm to kick off the 25th Annual NAPABA Convention. CLE credit is available.
This year’s Summit will feature panels on Health Care Reform and Immigration Reform and its impact on Asian Pacific American (APA) communities. We are pleased to have Delegate Mark Keam from the Virginia House of Delegates as our lunch speaker. Delegate Keam is the first APA immigrant to serve the General Assembly in Virginia’s 400 year history. He has a long history of community service, including a variety of local, state, and national organizations.
Pro bono is important to all of us. Each affiliate and each lawyer should be helping our communities in these efforts. Bar leaders are especially encouraged to attend. Even if you are not in bar leadership, this session will give you valuable insight into current issues, the state of the law and provide you with tools and knowledge to handle pro bono cases in your state. Many of you will want to have a clinic or other pro bono project this year—the Summit will help you accomplish that goal.
Attendance is free and lunch is available at a nominal cost. All lunch fee proceeds will be donated to Legal Aid of Western Missouri. Click here for more information on the Summit.
NAPABA Disaster Relief Database
The NAPABA Pro Bono and Community Service Committee introduces the disaster relief database. The database provides information on federal and local level resources on disaster relief and preparation. To address the needs of limited English proficient members of the APA community, many of the resources on the database are available in various Asian languages.

On June 13, the Asian American Law Fund of New York and the Asian American Bar Association of New York held their 2013 Summer Reception at Edwards Wildman’s New York office.
At this annual event, AALFNY presents the recipients of the Community Service Scholarship Awards. This year’s recipients were: Lucy Zhang, Duke ‘15, interning with New York Legal Assistance Group’s Total Life Choices department; Mieon Han (Fordham ’14), interning with MinKwon Center for Community Action. Also present was Nabila Taj, this year’s recipient of the AALFNY SABANY Public Interest Fellowship, interning at Queens Legal Services.
Also in attendance were many interns from this year’s class of the Joint Minority Bar Judicial Internship Program, co-sponsored by AALFNY, AABANY, the Metropolitan Black Bar Association, Black Bar Association of Bronx County, Puerto Rican Bar Association and the South Asian Bar Association of New York.
The special honoree was Glenn Lau-Kee, past President of AABANY and the President-elect of NYSBA, the first Asian American to hold that position. In June 2014, Glenn will take his place as the first Asian American President of NYSBA.
We thank all the contributors for making it possible for AALFNY and AABANY to support the scholarship fund and the JMB JIP. Thanks to all the attendees who came and helped make this year’s summer reception enjoyable and successful.
