Vinoo Varghese Authors Amici Brief Quoted in NYT

Board member Vinoo Varghese, principal at Varghese & Associates PC, submitted a brief for amici curiae National Legal Aid & Defenders Association (NLADA) and the Bronx Defenders in the case of United States v. Rajaratnam, pending in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.  The brief was quoted in the October 23 New York Times article, “Appeal in Insider Trading Case Centers on Wiretap.”

A group of defense lawyers said that upholding the use of wiretaps in this case would “eviscerate the integrity of the criminal justice system.”

Judicial Nomination Application Extended to Aug 15

The Commission on Judicial Nomination is currently soliciting candidates for the upcoming vacancy on the Court of Appeals that will occur as of January 1, 2013, upon the retirement of Senior Associate Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick.  To obtain an application, please follow this link, where you can download a PDF after entering your name and email address.  Applications are due to the Commission no later than August 15, 2012. 

In order to qualify for nomination, a candidate need only be a resident of New York State and admitted to practice law in New York for at least 10 years. There are no other eligibility requirements. For example, a candidate need not have prior service as a judge and is not required to be a practicing lawyer.

Commission Currently Soliciting Candidates for Upcoming Vacancy on the Court of Appeals

The Commission on Judicial Nominations is currently soliciting candidates for the upcoming vacancy on the Court of Appeals that will occur as of January 1, 2013, upon the retirement of Senior Associate Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick.  To obtain an application, please follow this link, where you can download a PDF after entering your name and email address.  Applications are due to the Commission no later than August 1, 2012.

Candidates for the upcoming vacancy may download an application from the Commission’s website, www.nysegov.com/cjn. The deadline to submit applications is August 1, 2012. In addition to this vacancy, there will be a number of scheduled vacancies arising at the Court of Appeals over the next several years. Applicants will also have the option to request that their applications be considered by the Commission for such future, scheduled vacancies.
