A Review of Professor Tanya Hernández’s Acclaimed Book:

Multiracials and Civil Rights: Mixed-Race Stories of Discrimination

On behalf of the St. John’s University School of Law’s Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development, along with the Ron Brown Center for Civil Rights, St. John’s enthusiastically invites you to be a part of their next symposium issue. They are proud to announce that their Journal will be working with Fordham Law Professor Tanya Hernández. Professor Hernández recently published her acclaimed book, Multiracial and Civil Rights: Mixed-Race Stories of Discrimination, and they want to continue the important scholarship, analysis, and dialogue that her book inspires.

The Journal is calling for any and all writers to provide a serious commentary to Professor Hernández’s inspirational book. Commentaries can be a short essay or a longer book review. Professor Hernández will review all commentary and provide a written collective response.

If you are interested, please provide a short abstract of your commentary.  All entries would be reviewed by the Journal’s editorial board. The editorial board will promptly notify authors who are accepted for publication in the Journal.

The editorial board is reviewing submissions on a rolling basis. If you are interested, please send the following information to jcredstjohns@gmail.com.

·       Your name, title, and professional affiliation;

·       Your curriculum vitae/resume;

·       Your contact details including phone number and email address;

·       A one to two page abstract summarizing your essay or review and indicating what your expected page length will be.

Accepting Nominations for Officer Candidates and Applications for At-Large Board Members for NAPABA’s 2019-20 Bar Year

The NAPABA Board of Governors consists of nine Officers who are elected by the membership, ten Regional Governors who are chosen by the NAPABA Regions, and four At-Large Board Members who are appointed by the Board of Governors. Now through July 8 at 5 p.m. EDT, the NAPABA Nominating & Elections Committee will be accepting nominations for members who want to stand for election as Officers and applications from members who want to be considered for At-Large Board Member positions.

2019 NAPABA Call for Programs | Deadline is Just Around the Corner!

The Call for Programs deadline is just around the corner! Monday is the last day to submit a program submission for the 2019 NAPABA Convention. Don’t miss the opportunity to feature your program at the 2019 NAPABA Convention taking place in Austin, TX from Nov. 7-10!

NAPABA is seeking program submissions on a wide range of substantive legal matters and topics of concern to the legal community to deepen our members’ knowledge and skills, and provide them with opportunities to forge bonds through panel discussions, workshops, and interactive presentations.

Thursday Specialty Programming
In addition to our general Call for Programs, we are seeking submissions for our Thursday Specialty Programming: 

1. International Law Symposium presented by the International Law Committee
2. Solo & Small Firm Bootcamp presented by the Solo & Small Firm Committee

Join us for NAPABA’s 2018 Lobby Day in Washington, DC, from May 7-8, 2018. This event is an opportunity for NAPABA members from across the country to meet and discuss with members of Congress and congressional staffers about important issues for the Asian Pacific American and legal community. 

Participants will meet with legislators and voice their perspectives on a range of topics. As a participant, NAPABA provides all training and materials you need to meet with legislators on Capitol Hill.

In 2018, a few key issues Lobby Day will showcase are:

  • Protecting the Legal Services Corporation
  • Continuing the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program
  • Supporting the Adoptee Citizenship Act of 2018
  • Honoring Chinese American Veterans of World War II

Congressional Reception
In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May, NAPABA will host a Congressional Reception. The reception will bring together Lobby Day participants, members of Congress and their staff, and leaders in the Asian Pacific American community. This event is open to the public, including NAPABA members who are unable to participate in Lobby Day.

Court Interpreters Needed: Apply by Dec. 1, 2017

The Written English Proficiency Exam (LANGUAGES OTHER THAN SPANISH) will be held on January 27, 2018. The deadline to submit applications is on December 1, 2017.

The Spanish per diem interpreter exam will not be administered to NYC candidates at this time.

All applicants must successfully pass both the Written and Oral Exams in order to provide court interpreting services in the New York State Unified Court System.

Exam schedules are posted on the court system’s website: http://nycourts.gov/careers/exams.shtml  

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and scheduled exam dates will be posted online. Applicants will be notified by mail of the exam date and location.
