The deadline to submit an application for the NAPABA Prospective Partners Program (PPP) is two weeks from today! PPP aims to increase the number of Asian Pacific American partners at major law firms through introduction, mentorship, and relationship building. Between 2010 and 2018, 72 percent of PPP participants have been promoted to partner or moved to senior in-house positions—84 percent of them within two years of participation! In anticipation of the program’s tenth year, the PPP is inviting candidate applications and nominations for participation in the PPP sessions taking place at the 2019 NAPABA Convention in Austin, TX from Nov. 7-10. The application will close on Aug. 15, 2019.

A Review of Professor Tanya Hernández’s Acclaimed Book:
Multiracials and Civil Rights: Mixed-Race Stories of Discrimination
On behalf of the St. John’s University School of Law’s Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development, along with the Ron Brown Center for Civil Rights, St. John’s enthusiastically invites you to be a part of their next symposium issue. They are proud to announce that their Journal will be working with Fordham Law Professor Tanya Hernández. Professor Hernández recently published her acclaimed book, Multiracial and Civil Rights: Mixed-Race Stories of Discrimination, and they want to continue the important scholarship, analysis, and dialogue that her book inspires.
The Journal is calling for any and all writers to provide a serious commentary to Professor Hernández’s inspirational book. Commentaries can be a short essay or a longer book review. Professor Hernández will review all commentary and provide a written collective response.
If you are interested, please provide a short abstract of your commentary. All entries would be reviewed by the Journal’s editorial board. The editorial board will promptly notify authors who are accepted for publication in the Journal.

Accepting Nominations for Officer Candidates and Applications for At-Large Board Members for NAPABA’s 2019-20 Bar Year
The NAPABA Board of Governors consists of nine Officers who are elected by the membership, ten Regional Governors who are chosen by the NAPABA Regions, and four At-Large Board Members who are appointed by the Board of Governors. Now through July 8 at 5 p.m. EDT, the NAPABA Nominating & Elections Committee will be accepting nominations for members who want to stand for election as Officers and applications from members who want to be considered for At-Large Board Member positions.

Applications may now be submitted for the 2019 Don H. Liu Scholars Program. The Program was founded in 2014 by two past presidents of the Asian American Bar Association of New York. The Program seeks to identify and cultivate future Asian American leaders in the legal community to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today – the barrier to advancement.
This year, the Selection Committee will select up to 3 scholars. Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 and have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of Target Corporation. Additionally, scholars will have assistance in securing summer internships. To be eligible for the Program, the applicant must be of Asian descent and be enrolled full-time as a 1L (and be expected to graduate in 2021) in a law school in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania or the District of Columbia. The Fall Conference is taking place on Saturday, September 22, at Fordham Law School. We will be taking program submissions this year via Google Form, which you can see by clicking on the hyperlink under the words “Google Form” or in the title of this post. We invite submissions from AABANY Committees, AABANY members, and our sister bar associations.

Join us for NAPABA’s 2018 Lobby Day in Washington, DC, from May 7-8, 2018. This event is an opportunity for NAPABA members from across the country to meet and discuss with members of Congress and congressional staffers about important issues for the Asian Pacific American and legal community.
Participants will meet with legislators and voice their perspectives on a range of topics. As a participant, NAPABA provides all training and materials you need to meet with legislators on Capitol Hill.

The Written English Proficiency Exam (LANGUAGES OTHER THAN SPANISH) will be held on January 27, 2018. The deadline to submit applications is on December 1, 2017.
The Spanish per diem interpreter exam will not be administered to NYC candidates at this time.
All applicants must successfully pass both the Written and Oral Exams in order to provide court interpreting services in the New York State Unified Court System.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and scheduled exam dates will be posted online. Applicants will be notified by mail of the exam date and location.
