CUP Fellows Program: Deadline Nov. 22

Dear CUP Members & Friends,   

The Council of Urban Professionals (CUP) is seeking dynamic emerging leaders from the business, consulting, digital and technology, finance, legal, media and entertainment, and non-profit and public sectors for its CUP Fellows Program.  Powered by American Express, the CUP Fellows Program is entering into its seventh year.

CUP Fellows are talented and visionary, multicultural and women professionals, aged 25 to 45, with the passion to become powerful leaders in their community. Through the CUP Fellows program, participants complete a rigorous ten month leadership development experience that includes skills-based training, networking events, and board placement services that prepare them for impactful civic involvement.   

There is no greater experience than being a CUP Fellow!  

In addition to equipping professionals with the skills needed to lead with impact, the CUP Fellows Program provides participants with a lifelong springboard for prestigious opportunities such as appointments to nonprofit and public sector boards. By exposing CUP Fellows to public sector opportunities and an influential network of professionals, the program is designed to equip participants with the skills, information, and resources needed to manage their careers effectively and position themselves for leadership opportunities. 

PROGRAM PARTICIPANT PERKS

  • Capstone Experience: The Capstone Project is a significant part of the CUP Fellows experience. The purpose of the project is to give the Fellows the opportunity to apply the leadership and professional skills learned throughout the program to a real-life organizational challenge in the non-profit sector.
  • CUP Board Matching Program: Through CUP’s “A Seat at the Table” initiative, we secure strategic board and career matches for CUP Fellows, fulfilling our vision of increasing the diversity of boardrooms and enhancing the capacity of organizations to better serve our communities. 
  • CUP Executive Level Membership: At the conclusion of the program, CUP Fellows receive a one-year CUP Executive Level membership. This membership gives access to members-only receptions, networking opportunities, leadership development forums and more.

The application deadline for the 2014 CUP Fellows Program is November 22, 2013. Select candidates will be invited to interview on December 6, 7, 13 or 14. All candidates must be available to interview on one of the scheduled dates.

Thomas Tang Moot Court Competition Deadline Coming Up Sept. 19

NAPABA Seeks At-Large Board Member Candidates Submission Deadline Extended to September 15th

This year, the NAPABA Board of Governors will appoint two At-Large Board Members to serve a two-year term that will begin in the 2013-2014 bar year.

The NAPABA Nominating and Elections Committee invites all members in good standing to submit their names and statements as candidates for At-Large Board Member to Pia Rivera at [email protected] on or before September 15, 2013.

2013 NAPABA Best Lawyers Under 40, Affiliate of the Year, 
Trailblazers, Law Firm Diversity, and APA-Owned Law Firm Awards 
Nominations Extended Submission Deadline: 5:00 pm EDT on July 29, 2013

Nominations for the following awards are due by 5:00 pm EDT on July 29, 2013. No further extensions will be granted. Award recipients will be honored at the 25th Annual NAPABA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri, on November 7-10, 2013.

NAPABA Affiliate of the Year Award Nominations

This Affiliate of the Year Award was established to recognize outstanding NAPABA affiliates for their best practices and accomplishments in their respective local communities. Only current 2012-2013 NAPABA affiliates are eligible for this Award.

NAPABA has created the first ever APA-Owned Law Firm Award of the Year to recognize our membership’s law firms—solo, small, and large—that have achieved prominence and distinction, and have demonstrated a strong commitment to the Asian Pacific American (APA) community. The Award celebrates law practices that embrace the APA community while maintaining the highest ethical and legal standards in our profession. The Award also recognizes firms that have advanced the goals and ideals of NAPABA and APA legal advocacy groups.

AABANY Law Review Student Note Competition

The AABANY Law Review is pleased to announce its inaugural Student Note Competition. One student note will be selected for publication in the Fall 2013 issue, and the winner will be awarded a $300 cash prize.  Our hope is that the timing of the competition will encourage those students who are writing relevant seminar papers this spring to satisfy their course requirement while also creating an entry for the competition. Students who have written papers in the past are also welcome to submit them for consideration if they have not been previously published. The deadline to submit a piece for consideration is Monday, June 24, 2013. Statements of intent, inquiries, and submissions should be sent to [email protected].

DEADLINE TO APPLY: VABAW Hong-Duc Clerkship Program

The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington (VABAW) is pleased to offer a summer clerkship through our Hong Duc Clerkship program.  This year’s recipient will be VABAW’s 6th Hong Duc Clerk.  The clerk will be working at Hogan Lovells in Ho Chi Minh City this upcoming summer.

Deadline to Submit: Joint Minority Bar Judicial Internship Program

The deadline to submit an application for the Joint Minority Bar (“JMB”) Judicial Internship Program has been extended until Friday, February 8, 2013.

The Association of Judges of Hispanic Heritage (“AJHH”), the Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”), the Asian American Law Fund of New York (“AALFNY”), the Metropolitan Black Bar Association (“MBBA”), the Puerto Rican Bar Association (“PRBA”), and the South Asian Bar Association (“SABANY”) have joined together to form the Joint Minority Judicial Internship Program (the “Program”) to offer law students who have completed at least one year of law school the opportunity to continue their legal education as summer judicial interns in New York and New Jersey metropolitan area courthouses. Judicial internships are exceptional learning opportunities that offer tremendous insight into the process of judicial decision-making. They offer an opportunity to strengthen analytic and legal writing skills.

NAPABA IHC Mentoring Program

The NAPABA In-House Counsel Committee’s mentoring program is accepting applications for in-house counsel (including attorneys working for the public sector, academic institutions, and non-profits) to participate as a mentee and/or mentor. The program seeks to foster relationships between NAPABA members who are experienced in-house counsel and NAPABA members who are either (i) new to the in-house position and in need of guidance, including advice on professional development, career goals and transitioning into the in-house position, or (ii) experienced in-house practitioners in need of guidance on how to move forward or position themselves to take advantage of future opportunities. Applications are due to Lusanna Ro at [email protected] and David Kahng at [email protected] by February 15, 2013.

NAPABA SUPPORT FOR ABA APPOINTMENTS – FEB. 11 DEADLINE

We need your help and involvement to ensure that Asian Pacific Americans are well represented in the ABA’s leadership ranks. Please consider applying for an appointment or encouraging another NAPABA member to do so.

NAPABA will be recommending candidates for appointments to committees, commissions, and other ABA entities for the upcoming bar year. To be considered for an endorsement, you must submit a request to NAPABA by February 11, 2013, noon EST.

Important steps:

  1. To apply for an ABA appointment, you must be a member of the ABA. If you are not already a member, click here for membership information.
  2. You must apply for an appointment online at http://www.abanet.org/appointments by February 25.
  3. You should seek the support of your friends and colleagues who are already in the ABA leadership ranks or who are leaders in your local/state bar associations.
  4. To secure NAPABA’s support for an appointment, send an email to Pia Rivera at [email protected] by February 11 with the subject line “ABA Appointments.” You should provide a short bio, identify the particular entities you are interested in serving on, and explain your interest and any relevant experience.
