AABANY Holds 2026 Annual Meeting of Members at King & Spalding on February 11th

On Wednesday, February 11th, 2026, AABANY held its Annual Meeting of Members at King & Spalding. The evening reflected on the accomplishments of the past year and looked forward to electing leadership for the new fiscal year ahead. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to King & Spalding for generously hosting us in their stunning new space, which was modern and spacious.

AABANY President Benjamin Hsing called the meeting to order shortly after 7 pm and established a quorum. Ben explained the voting procedures and encouraged everyone present to cast a vote, even if they had voted online before the meeting.

Once all ballots were filled out and collected, Ben called up Board Director Katherine Loanzon and President-Elect Varuna Bhattacharyya to serve as the Tellers to tally up the votes. They departed to a separate room to perform that task, counting up the votes cast in person at the Annual Meeting and via electronic voting beforehand. While the votes were being tallied, Ben invited the Membership Director, Alysha Naik, to present the Membership Director’s report. He then invited Assistant Treasurer H. Anthony Park to give the Treasurer’s Report, sharing information about AABANY’s financial performance during the past fiscal year.

Next, during the Annual Report of the Board, Ben presented a look back at major events in 2025, reflecting on AABANY’s remarkable year, guided by the theme “Together We Thrive: The Power of Us.” He highlighted the year’s signature events, including the Winter Soiree, AAPI Heritage Month celebrations, and the Annual Dinner at Cipriani Wall Street, which drew over 750 attendees. He also noted the 16th Annual Fall Conference, which featured CLE programming, a Career Fair, a Trial Advocacy Program, and the presentation of the Norman Lau Kee Trailblazer Award to Hon. Judy Kim, the first Korean-American judge elected to the New York State Supreme Court. He celebrated AABANY’s first-ever Diwali Dinner as a milestone that reflected the community’s diversity.

Executive Director Yang Chen then gave the Annual Report of the Committees. He introduced AABANY’s 2025 Year End Report, noting that this was the first time it had been published since the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed his sincere gratitude to Deputy Executive Director Carrey Wong, emphasizing that the Year End Report would not have been possible without her diligence and many hours of work behind the scenes. He further explained that the hiatus was not due to any slowdown in AABANY’s activities. In fact, quite to the contrary, AABANY’s membership and programming have continued to grow at an impressive pace, reflecting the organization’s strength and momentum over the past few years.

Yang also presented highlights from the 26 Committees, expressing his gratitude to the Vice Presidents of Programs and Operations, Pei Pei Cheng de Castro and Tai Chien, as well as all the Committee Chairs, for their dedication and hard work throughout the year. He shared key accomplishments and standout events from various Committees, then concluded with the presentation of the Committee of the Year, Program of the Year, and Member of the Year awards.

Committee of the Year: Issues Committee

The Committee of the Year Award was presented to the Issues Committee in recognition of its outstanding contributions and impact over the past year. When asked for his reflections on receiving the honor, Co-Chair Vishal Chander shared that he and Co-Chair Rachel Lee view the Committee’s mission as deeply significant and timely. He noted that they felt a strong responsibility to meet the moment and lead with purpose, striving to uphold the Committee’s important work with utmost dedication and integrity.

Program of the Year: Dumplings and Discussion Series

The Program of the Year Award was presented to the Dumplings and Discussion Series hosted by Jeffrey Mok. The Dumplings & Discussion series has been a welcoming forum for prominent, industry-leading attorneys to share their stories and have a candid dialogue over delicious dumplings. Speakers in 2025 included Alan Chang of the New York Yankees, Michelle Lee of MediaCo, Christopher Chan of JLL Technologies, Sonia Low of the Javits Center, Liz Nie of Acorns, Stephen Mar of Odeko, and Osamu Watanabe of Moelis.

Member of the Year: Jeffrey Mok

The Member of the Year Award was presented to Jeffrey Mok for his exceptional dedication and contributions to AABANY over the past year, including his outstanding work as the Co-Chair of the IP Committee and organizing many popular and worthwhile events, such as Board Games Nights and the Dumplings & Discussion series. 

When asked about receiving both the Program of the Year and the Member of the Year awards, Jeffrey reflected that the past year had been truly inspiring and energizing in deepening his involvement with AABANY. Praising AABANY’s work with the Pro Bono Clinics and the Issues Committee, he shared that being part of such a passionate and dynamic community made all the effort worthwhile. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute, even in a small way, and said he looks forward to continuing the work and participating in more impactful events in the year ahead.

After presenting the awards, President-Elect Varuna Bhattacharyya announced the election results. The following officers were elected to serve a one-year term for the fiscal year beginning April 1, 2026, and ending March 31, 2027 (the “2027 Fiscal Year”):

With mentorship as a central focus, she is committed to strengthening the pipeline of Asian American attorneys and ensuring that AABANY continues to empower and uplift tomorrow’s leaders today.

Michelle Lee Shares Her Journey at Dumplings & Discussion on Nov. 12

On November 12, 2025, AABANY hosted another installment of its popular Dumplings & Discussion series, featuring Michelle Lee, General Counsel at MediaCo. The event drew a diverse group of attorneys and law students for an evening filled with candid conversation, career inspiration, community building, and, of course, delicious dumplings.

Moderated by AABANY Board Director Jeffrey Mok, the discussion explored Michelle’s remarkable journey through the legal profession. She reflected on her path to becoming General Counsel, sharing insights on mentorship, resilience, and embracing new challenges. Her thoughtful reflections offered both practical guidance and encouragement to aspiring legal professionals navigating their own career paths.

Following the conversation, attendees gathered for a networking reception, continuing the dialogue over plates of dumplings. The evening fostered connection, mentorship, and the exchange of shared experiences among members of the legal community.

AABANY extends its heartfelt thanks to Michelle Lee for her generosity in sharing her story, to Jeffrey Mok for leading the discussion, and to all who attended for making the event a success.

AABANY Hosts “Dumplings & Discussion” Chat with Christopher Y. Chan

On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, AABANY’s Dumpling & Discussion series hosted Christopher Y. Chan, General Counsel at JLL Technologies, for a night of candid conversation and dumplings. The discussion was held at Fish & Richardson’s office in Times Square and moderated by AABANY Board Director Jeffrey Mok.

Over the course of the evening, Chris shared with us his fascinating legal career that has spanned the U.S. and Southeast Asia. Risk-taking, stereotype-breaking, and finding happiness were some of the key topics of discussion as Chris recounted how his journey to his current position as Global General Counsel for JLL Technologies.  Chris also shared his thoughts on the future of the legal industry.  During the Q&A session, Chris addressed questions from an avid audience about the importance of building strong communities and relationships and aspiring for success on your own terms.

In a lively networking reception afterwards, attendees enjoyed drinks along with plates of dumplings, siu mai and Singaporean mei fun.

AABANY Intellectual Property Committee Hosts Board Games Night at Fish & Richardson

On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, AABANY’s Intellectual Property Committee hosted a Board Games Night at Fish  &  Richardson’s office in Times Square. The event was open to all, no matter skill level or profession, and encouraged guests to bring a friend. 

Around 20 players, including IP lawyers, legal interns, law students, in-house counsel, and patent professionals, gathered for an evening of friendly competition. Guests had the opportunity to enjoy a range of activities, including table tennis, Taboo, Codenames, and many exciting new games.

A spread of dumplings, noodles, and refreshments was available throughout the night. Professionals and students were able to converse about their various fields and advice for future career paths while also learning how to play new games.

After mingling and playing at various tables, everyone came together for a spirited group session of Hues and Cues. A player took turns providing one or two-word hints, prompting others in five teams of three to four to quickly identify a specific color square and place their pieces on the board before other teams beat them to it.

The AABANY and Fish interns took some time to figure out the rules of the game. Once they did, they showed everyone at the event how to play. Almost everyone participated, and they formed teams in this friendly competition. The game continued into the night, contributing to an atmosphere inspiring friendly banter, allowing participants to unwind and connect.

AABANY Dumplings & Discussions Featuring Liz Nie

On June 16, 2025, AABANY held another installment of its Dumplings & Discussion Series. The series presents notable leaders in the legal industry in a fireside chat, in a casual, intimate setting. We were honored to have Liz Nie as our featured guest of the night. Liz is the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Acorns, a financial technology company. Throughout the event, attendees enjoyed pork and chive dumplings, shu mai, shrimp rolls, and many other delicious Chinese dishes. AABANY Board Director Jeffrey Mok moderated the discussion.

Over the course of the evening, Liz enthusiastically discussed her journey in the legal profession. She described her personal experiences that led to her current role as General Counsel and her transition into the fintech industry, and offered valuable insights into the industry.

Liz’s discussion elicited many thought-proving questions from all the attendees, resulting in a lively Q&A.

Afterwards, everyone continued to enjoy food and drinks while forming new connections and cultivating old ones at the networking reception.

AABANY Dumplings & Discussion Series Features David S. Sohn

On October 15, AABANY held the 5th installment of its Dumpling & Discussion Series.  The series brings notable AAPI leaders in the legal industry, with a fireside chat in a casual, intimate setting.  

We were honored to have David S. Sohn as our featured guest.  David is Vice President and Assistant General Counsel at JPMorgan Chase & Co.  David is also a current co-chair of AABANY’s In-House Committee, and formerly an AABANY Director and Vice-President of Programs & Operations, among other leadership positions at AABANY. 

Jeffrey Mok, current co-Vice-President of Programs & Operations, hosted the discussion.  David shared candid thoughts about his career journey, including his path to law school and his transition between different industries.  David also shared his insights on leadership and offered tips for lawyers who are early in their careers.

Attendees enjoyed a wide selection of delicious dumplings and other Chinese food. 

A lively reception followed the discussion with David, and attendees made new connections with each other over food and drinks.

AABANY Intellectual Property Committee and YSIAC Host: Dinner at Dim Sum Palace

On October 1, 2024, AABANY’s Intellectual Property Committee and the Young Singapore International Arbitration Centre (YSIAC) teamed up to host a fantastic Dim Sum dinner at Dim Sum Palace. The event drew a great crowd of IP litigation professionals, with everyone enjoying dishes like Peking Duck, Shu-Mai, and E-Fu Noodles. Jeffrey Mok, co-chair of AABANY’s IP Committee, and Adriana Uson, director of the SIAC, served as hosts for the evening.

As the night progressed, the event fostered a sense of community among the attendees, encouraging new collaborations and deepening professional relationships. This Dim Sum dinner was a meaningful gathering that provided a perfect balance of intellectual exchange and culinary enjoyment.

Among the attendees was Charlene Valdez Warner, a Senior U.S. Associate at Linklaters. We discussed her fascinating work in international arbitration and litigation, as well as what it is like being a Filipino-American in the legal field. She emphasized how important it is for Asian professionals, especially in underrepresented areas like ours, to have these kinds of gatherings. It’s not just about business; it’s about building community, sharing experiences, and lifting each other up.

Throughout the evening, the conversations were just as varied as the menu, with topics ranging from IP trends to the challenges of working in global markets. Charlene and I both agreed that dinners like these are essential, providing a space where Asian American attorneys can connect on a personal level and strengthen their professional networks.

As the night wrapped up, it was clear that the event was more than just a meal – it was a reminder of the power of community. Intellectual Property Committee Hosts Pre-Thanksgiving Dinner at Dhaba Indian Cuisine

On November 21, 2023, the IP Committee convened at Dhaba Indian Cuisine for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner. Co-Chair of the IP Committee, Jeffrey Mok, ordered family-style dishes for everyone to share. A group of law firm attorneys, in-house counsel, and students connected over aromatic and spicy Punjabi specialties. Some highlights were the paneer cheese, baigan da bharta (tandoor smoked eggplant), and lamb biryani. Conversations ranged from how AI can transform legal business models and what to do in NYC over the holidays to stories about law school reunions and career paths.

AABANY Holds Kick-Off Meeting and Orientation for FY24 Committee Co-Chairs

On Monday, April 24, 2023, Co-Vice Presidents of Programs & Operations, Beatrice Leong and Jeffrey Mok, along with President Karen Kim and Executive Director Yang Chen held a Kick-Off Meeting and Orientation for the Fiscal Year 2024 Co-Chairs. The meeting was held at Alston & Bird near Grand Central. Thanks to Board Director and Bankruptcy Committee Co-Chair Will Hao, Counsel at Alston, for hosting.

This year’s class of Co-Chairs was appointed by President Karen Kim at the start of the fiscal year in April. All Co-Chairs serve for a one-year term co-terminous with Karen’s term as President during the fiscal year which ends on March 31, 2024.

Co-Chairs and Vice Chairs representing 25 out of 27 Committees were present, and the new Co-Chairs received orientation about AABANY’s protocols and goals. The returning Co-Chairs received a refresher.

After the Orientation meeting, everyone walked over to Stout Grand Central for an afterparty where Committee Co-Chairs were able to meet each other and mingle over oysters, tacos, and baos, along with drinks from the well-stocked bar.

AABANY Holds its 2023 Annual Meeting of Members at Paul, Weiss on February 15

On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, AABANY held its Annual Meeting of Members at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.  President William Ng called the meeting to order and established quorum. The main order of business was conducting the election for the 2024 Board of Directors and Officers.

President William Ng presented the Annual Report of the Board and thanked the Board members for their service during the past year. Treasurer Evelyn Gong and Membership Director Christopher Bae presented the reports for their respective offices.

Executive Director Yang Chen presented highlights of Committee activities. Following the reports, awards were presented to honor AABANY leaders and committees for their dedication to AABANY over the past year. While these presentations were occurring, Immediate Past President Terrence Shen and President-Elect Karen Kim tallied the votes.

The following awards were presented:

Committee of the Year: Intellectual Property Committee

The Intellectual Property Committee received the Committee of the Year Award for its outstanding contributions in promoting AABANY’s membership engagement and creating a vibrant community for IP law practitioners. The Committee successfully hosted several committee dinners and social events including their first concert event to see the ARKAI Duo.  At the start of 2023, the IP Committee started a new program called “Dumplings & Discussion,” the inaugural event featuring Andy Yoo, SVP & General Counsel of Savvas Learning Company.  The discussion covered topics including Andy’s role as general counsel, diversity, equity and inclusion, and his career path and trajectory.

Program of the Year: Inter-Bar Association Summer Family Day 

The Program of the Year Award was given to Christopher Bae, AABANY’s Membership Director.  On June 4, 2022, AABANY’s Membership Committee hosted an Inter-Bar Association Summer Family Day with the Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York (KALAGNY) and the South Asian Bar Association of New York (SABANY). Over fifty members and their friends and families gathered at the Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Community Center in Brooklyn to participate in spirited sports games and enjoy snacks and refreshments.

Member of the Year: Jennifer H. Wu

The Member of the Year Award was presented to Jennifer H. Wu, for her outstanding leadership inside and outside of AABANY. Within AABANY, she co-chaired the Women’s Committee and helped to put on some excellent events. She was also active in AABANY’s Anti-Asian Violence Task Force, in addition to the pro bono work she had been doing to advise and assist survivors and victims of anti-Asian violence in New York over the past couple of years. On top of all that, she co-founded her own patent litigation law firm Groombridge Wu Baughman & Stone

Congratulations to all the honorees for the recognition of their achievements and hard work during the 2023 fiscal year.
