Mentors Needed for Legal Outreach

At Legal Outreach, we focus on helping underserved students matriculate to top colleges and universities. We have been very successful in our efforts, as every one of our students graduates from high school, 85% complete college within four years, and 14% go on to become lawyers themselves.

We achieve these results through comprehensive programming that includes internships for the students at law firms and public interest organizations, SAT prep, after-school tutoring, and academic counseling. We also run a Constitutional Law Debate Program where students read fact patterns, analyze case-law, prepare briefs, and perfect oral arguments for constitutional law debates.  

All students in our program are assigned an Attorney  Mentor. These mentors are lawyers from major legal services firms, non-profit organizations, and government agencies throughout New York City. We are currently recruiting 50 attorneys to be mentors to our rising-sophomores. Attorney Mentors play an integral role in the success of our program and, based on surveys, students have credited much of their academic, personal, and professional accomplishments to the guidance and support they have received from their mentors.  

Mentoring is a low-commitment, high reward volunteer activity. Although we do ask that our mentors commit to mentoring a student from their sophomore through senior years of high school, mentoring is only a 4 hour per month commitment. Mentors help students with their constitutional law debate preparation and provide academic and personal counseling to our students. Mentors also receive 3 CLE credits each reporting cycle for participating in our Attorney Mentoring Program.

NAPABA IHC Mentoring Program

The NAPABA In-House Counsel Committee’s mentoring program is accepting applications for in-house counsel (including attorneys working for the public sector, academic institutions, and non-profits) to participate as a mentee and/or mentor. The program seeks to foster relationships between NAPABA members who are experienced in-house counsel and NAPABA members who are either (i) new to the in-house position and in need of guidance, including advice on professional development, career goals and transitioning into the in-house position, or (ii) experienced in-house practitioners in need of guidance on how to move forward or position themselves to take advantage of future opportunities. SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK SEEKING CANDIDATES
FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT MENTORING PROGRAM

The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York is seeking candidates for its Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Mentoring Program. Ideal candidates are attorneys with five or more years of experience litigating in state court, with fifteen felony trials to verdict as lead counsel or comparable in-court experience under their belt. Under the supervision of a member of the CJA Panel, CJA Mentees would represent defendants in federal court who qualify for appointed representation under the Criminal Justice Act.

Women’s Foreign Policy Group Mentoring Fairs provide an opportunity for students and young professionals to meet with international affairs professionals and learn from their career experiences. Unlike a career fair, the focus is on entering and succeeding in international career fields, not just opportunities at particular companies. This year we are cosponsoring the event with New York University.

Mentors are mid- to senior-level women and men working in international affairs who want to sit down with aspiring leaders to give career guidance and practical advice. Sectors include international development, NGOs, human rights, international law, international health, international business, diplomatic service, the UN, journalism, and communications.
