FAM (FILIPINO AMERICAN MUSEUM) ORGANIZES AN ONLINE HOLIDAY SHOP TO BENEFIT LIFESAVER AND TYPHOON HAIYAN RELIEF
 
LAUNCHES DECEMBER 12th at 12AM
 
(New York, NY December 11, 2013)  FAM (Filipino American Museum) presents the second in a series of fundraisers for Typhoon Haiyan relief: an online holiday shop with all proceeds to go to LIFESAVER®. 

This follows a successful inaugural benefit that took place on November 21st called ‘Bayanihan Spirit’ which raised $11,000 for National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON). The online store (visit shop.filipinoamericanmuseum.com) launches on December 12th at 12:00am and closes on December 23rd at 11:59pm.
 
The designers and brands are donating to the typhoon relief cause by offering items on FAM’s shop at 20% off retail. The contents of the shop were edited and organized by Mary Ping and Avena Gallagher. The full list of designers and brands are as follows:

Comprising over 30 designers and brands, the items range in price from $20 to $825. Highlights include "Pony" Leather Shorts by A Detacher, and a Split Tail Mohair Cardigan by Tess Giberson. Items will be eligible for delivery by Christmas day; orders within New York State must be made by December 23rd for next day delivery, orders out of New York State will need to be made by December 20th for delivery by December 25th.
 
The proceeds will benefit LIFESAVER , a company founded after the wake of the December 2004 Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The lack of safe drinking water inspired the founder Michael Pritchard to invent the company’s first product, the LIFESAVER bottle. Around the world, LIFESAVER systems have helped hundreds of thousands of people produce safe sterile drinking water. Responding to an appeal from Oxfam and Save the Children, LIFESAVER has already shipped an initial 3,500 jerrycans to the Philippines as part of the Department for International Development’s Rapid Response Facility. These jerrycans are capable of providing 70 million liters of clean water to those in desperate need. FAM’s contribution will enable more vital LIFESAVER equipment to be sent out to the Philippines and save thousands more lives currently at risk.

FAM PRESS RELEASE: FAM (FILIPINO AMERICAN MUSEUM) ORGANIZES A NIGHT OF BAYANIHAN SPIRIT TO RAISE FUNDS TO BENEFIT TYPHOON HAIYAN RELIEF EFFORTS

(Flushing, Queens – November, 18, 2013) – A press conference at the District Office of New York State Assemblymember Ron Kim announced a major benefit to raise funds for Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts. Organized by FAM (Filipino American Museum), the fundraiser will take place this Thursday, November 21 at the Galapagos Art Space in Dumbo, Brooklyn. With an estimated 11 million Filipinos affected, displaced or left homeless by this catastrophic event, FAM has urgently rallied an impressive group of individuals, businesses, local government officials, and community organizations to create an evening celebration of the Bayanihan Spirit. The Filipino term, ‘Bayanihan’, refers to a spirit of communal unity and effort to help build a neighbor’s home.

All proceeds will go to National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON), whose “Taskforce Haiyan” is a grassroots relief effort coordinated directly between Filipinos in the US and those in affected areas of the Philippines. Funds will be spent on food, water and medical supplies and distributed by Philippines based groups. For more information, please visit NAFCON’s website by clicking here.

According to Nancy Bulalacao, a FAM founding member, “At FAM we have the ability to build a coalition that demonstrates a solidarity as New Yorkers and Asian Americans by coming together to support the real efforts for relief on the ground in the Philippines. We are artists, writers, musicians, cultural and community organizations moved by the tragedy and looking for ways to express our support. We serve constituents who are directly affected by the tragedy. What happens thousands of miles away resonates directly with us here. The level of loss in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan can be felt no matter who you are or where you live.”

Assemblymember Ron Kim states, “I join my colleagues in government and all our community members in feeling absolutely heartbroken over the recent natural disaster in the Philippines. Through the recent natural disasters that have hit our coast in the last two years, we know a fraction of what is going on now in some of the cities and towns in the islands of the Phillpines.  As part of the worldwide community, it is important to show our support and solidarity, now more than ever.  My office will continue to do what we can to support groups like FAM in raising relief funding.”

The Emcee for the evening will be Miss Info from HOT 97. The program will feature readings by Kilusan Bautista, Luis Francia, Bino Realuyo, and Lara Stapleton; music by Deep Foundation, DILIA*, Hydroponikz, !llmind, Joe Bataan, Masia One, Norman Vladimir, and Smokey Robotic; DJ sets by GETLIVE!, and Jon Santos; and a demonstration by Pekiti Tirsia Kali Elite. Food for the event will be catered by Red Egg and Salome Tarts.

(New York City – October 21, 2013) FAM (Filipino American Museum) —the first museum focused on examining the connection between contemporary Filipino American arts and the roots and traditions of the Philippine diaspora— will have its debut in New York City on October 29, 2013. A start-up committed to presenting cultural programs in stimulating and unprecedented ways, FAM is dedicated to seeking out what it is to be Filipino in America.

In the spirit of a diverse people, FAM’s roving programs serve as a fluid, user-generated, inquiry-based space. An untold American story, FAM presents its findings through live performances, exhibits, installations, community forums, online content and otherwise.

To kick off the founding of FAM, the public is invited to participate in a one-night event: a new sound and light performance by Queens-based, Filipino American artist Stephen Decker. While FAM will focus initially on New York City, it intends to grow the audience slowly and into other local communities. It aims to capture this national voice by serving a broader audience through original programming online. 

FAM contextualizes its work within a broader Asian American perspective. In seeking new and exciting work in the Filipino American community, FAM will explore the ways in which that work intersects with broader audiences. The goal is to frame this conversation by asking questions and letting the range of answers lead the exploration. FAM is focused on bringing these stories to a general audience and capitalizing on the diversity of the Filipino American community.

“Filipinos in America have been impacting US culture for centuries,” according to Nancy Bulalacao, a founding member of FAM. “The community is diverse, passionate, and distinguishes itself in mainstream culture in ways that I think are not often recognized. FAM intends to capture these stories and weave a narrative that acknowledges the past, present, and future contributions of Filipino Americans in this country.” 

The earliest documented arrival of Filipinos dates to 1587 in California. Filipinos make up the second largest Asian American population, numbering at 3.4 million nationwide. Today, Filipinos make their home in all corners of the United States.

FAM’s founding committee is comprised of professionals and individuals from the worlds of the visual arts and museums, fashion, design and film. The advisory board is made up of prominent Asian American cultural leaders that provide guidance and support to the founding committee. Advisors include author and historian Luis Francia, attorney Rio Guerrero, actor Ching Valdes-Aran, and Museum of Chinese in America co-founders Charles Lai and John Kuo Wei Tchen. 

About the Inaugural Event by Stephen Decker

Stephen Decker’s Salvaging the Aether, a one-night sound and light piece will transform Third Streaming, an alternative art space in SoHo, into a conduit for interpenetrating sound signals. From street intercom transmissions to long distance radio frequencies, these amoebic presences will inhabit the space inside the gallery, making audible what is already in the air. Decker’s live orchestration of found and constructed sound will be built around noise-making objects like a short wave radio transmitting Morse code, wind chimes attached to a disco ball motor, and a sub-woofer interacting intimately with baoding balls.

Filipino Americans have made important contributions to alternative music, especially in the development of West Coast hip hop. Beginning in the 1990s, DJ Q-Bert and the Invisibl Skratch Piklz crew were at the forefront of creating sci-fi themed tracks composed of fast speed record scratching. Their re-purposing of existing material echoes techniques deployed by Decker, and that is common in other Filipino cultural forms like craft arts and building construction, where appropriation is the product of both convenience and expression.

Stephen Decker (b.1987) is an artist currently based in New York. While in attendance at Yale’s MFA sculpture program he initiated a number of sound works for radio broadcast on pirate frequencies. Most recently his work has been performed for Listening Room at the Studio Museum Harlem and Crypsis at Distillery Gallery in Boston.
