Vinoo Varghese Authors Amici Brief Quoted in NYT

Board member Vinoo Varghese, principal at Varghese & Associates PC, submitted a brief for amici curiae National Legal Aid & Defenders Association (NLADA) and the Bronx Defenders in the case of United States v. Rajaratnam, pending in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.  The brief was quoted in the October 23 New York Times article, “Appeal in Insider Trading Case Centers on Wiretap.”

A group of defense lawyers said that upholding the use of wiretaps in this case would “eviscerate the integrity of the criminal justice system.”

WSJ: Vinoo Varghese Secures Plea Deal in Art Fraud Case

AABANY Director and criminal defense attorney Vinoo Varghese appeared in a Wall Street Journal story on January 13 about his client Richard Silver who took a guilty plea in a case involving forged appraisal documents for fake Damien Hirst prints.  Not mentioned in the article is the excellent result that Vinoo obtained for his client who was looking at a possible 7-year prison term.  Vinoo negotiated that down to 60 days in a vocational program or 12 weekends in jail.

Vinoo Varghese to Join ITAP Faculty at Cardozo

Board Member Vinoo Varghese has been invited for the third consecutive year to join the faculty of the Intensive Trial Advocacy Program (ITAP) at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. Taking place during the first two-weeks of January 2012, ITAP reaches its 29th consecutive year of teaching future lawyers trial advocacy skills.  We commend Vinoo for his commitment and dedication to training law students to be trial lawyers.  Please join us in congratulating Vinoo on this honor.

AABANY Leaders’ Speaking Engagements in October

We would like to recognize several AABANY leaders who will be speaking at various bar association programs this month.

  • Thursday, Oct. 13, Executive Director Yang Chen speaks at the New York State Conference of Bar Leaders Fall 2011 Workshop: “Leading Lawyers,” in the program on “Social Networking Part IV – Digging Deeper.”
  • Wednesday, Oct. 19, Solo and Small Firm Committee Co-Chair Pauline Yeung-Ha will speak at NYSBA Trust and Estate Law Section Diversity Committee’s program “Breaking it Down: the Nuts and Bolts of Estate Planning and Administration.” Pauline will speak on “How to Administer the Estate” on day two (October 19), during the Estate Administration portion of the two-day event (the first day is October 12).
