On August 9, AABANY hosted an evening of ping pong and pool at Slate, co-sponsored by Merrill Lynch/BofA.  Karen Wu, co-chair of the Pro Bono and Community Service Committee, co-organized the event with Kai Cheng of Merrill Lynch/BofA.  Attendees included Bobby Liu, General Counsel at MD Sass, past president James Chou, current President Jean Lee, and the Hon. Robert Reed.  Karen ran a mini speed tournament in which contestants took turns exchanging volleys.  Participants received goodies donated by JOOLA, official sponsor of USA Table Tennis.  The ping pong took place in a private section of Slate that was reserved for AABANY.  Those who were more inclined to billiards went downstairs and shot some 8 ball and 9 ball at the pool tables.  A wonderful time was had by all. Thanks to everyone who came!

I am Pvt. Danny Chen Rally to Demand Respect and Honor in the Army

On October 3, 2011, Pvt. Danny Chen was found dead with a bullet to his head after being hazed and being subjected to racial slurs by his superiors. Eight soldiers have been charged in connection with his death. The jury at the first military court martial, US v. Holcomb, only found the defendant guilty of maltreatment and assault and battery. He was sentenced to only 30 days confinement, one level reduction of rank, and a $1,181.55 fine. Is this justice?

Please join SABANY for a fundraiser to support the Oak Creek, Wisconsin Sikh community.  All donations will go to a fund established for the victims of the shooting, the injured police officer, and their families.  Vermilion has generously agreed to co-sponsor the fundraiser and will donate a portion of all bar sales to the fund. 
 
A staff member from the Sikh Coalition will speak at the event.

MinKwon is Hiring! (Immigration Paralegal)

The MinKwon Center for Community Action is seeking someone to fill the position of Immigration Paralegal.

Help us find a new member of the MinKwon family!  In response to the Obama Administration’s new “deferred action” program for undocumented DREAM youth, we’re looking for a paralegal/outreach coordinator to help provide services, education and outreach to undocumented Korean American youth. 

Job Descriptions

The immigration paralegal will work on the following:

  • Engage in direct contact with clients on a daily basis, which includes performing initial intakes, assessing clients’ cases, and providing direct assistance
  • Prepare and conduct educational workshops for community members on relevant immigration and other important legal and social issues
  • Work with custom case management system

Informational Sessions on Deferred Action for DREAMers

The New York Immigration Coalition will provide several informational sessions on President Obama’s June 15th announcement about Deferred Action for certain young people who were brought into the United States through no fault of their own.

Come get the latest news on Deferred Action. Learn what Deferred Action is and who is eligible for it under this program.

We have already received reports that notarios and other unscrupulous people are trying to scam immigrants by calling this program an amnesty or a way to get your green card.  That is false.  The Deferred Action program is not an amnesty.  Come to one of our sessions and get accurate up-to-date information about this program.  These informational sessions are not legal clinics.

Stories Through Paper Exhibition

From Aesop’s Fables and the Brothers Grimm to Tinker Bell and Harry Potter, the Charles B. Wang Center’s 8th Annual Origami Heaven Exhibition celebrates Stories through Paper recreated and interpreted by esteemed origami artists from around the world. Join us to delight in intricate folded-paper tableaux of beloved stories, myths, and characters, and to learn new stories from past and present, home and abroad.

In addition to the exhibition, we offer folding sessions with origami artists every day at 12:00 PM.

Recommended admission fee and raffle draw: $5

NYIC Orientation on Deferred Action

August 15: Orientation on Deferred Action

On August 15, 2012, many young undocumented immigrants will be allowed to apply for a temporary work permit and deferred action relief.  

All across the country, immigrant rights groups are organizing legal workshops for youth who might be interested in applying.  In New York, The New York Immigration Coalition and its partners will hold an orientation workshop on:
