Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities with MinKwon Center

The MinKwon Center will be hosting several Naturalization Clinics. These clinics are great opportunities to assist low-income community members with immigration law forms. Clinics will be held at the MinKwon Center’s office in Flushing and Fort Lee, NJ.  

No prior experience is necessary, and training will be provided on the day of each clinic. MinKwon Center keeps a log of all volunteer hours and we’re glad to certify your pro bono hours for the NY bar admission requirement. If you’re interested in volunteering with MinKwon, please read the following clinic descriptions and sign up using the links below:

MinKwon Center will be helping eligible legal permanent residents (i.e., green card holders) complete their applications to become naturalized U.S. citizens. MinKwon Center could use the assistance of attorneys, students and interpreters. Korean and/or Chinese language ability is especially helpful. On June 30, AABANY’s Prosecutors Committee held their 7th Annual Reception at Brooklyn Law School, honoring Deputy U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon H. Kim and the family of fallen hero Detective Wenjian Liu. Read our highlight here.

The Asian American Bar Association of New York’s Prosecutors Committee held their 7th Annual Reception on June 30 at Brooklyn Law School. On the same day that he was promoted, Deputy U.S. Attorney Korean prosecutor Kim Joon Hyun (far left in the photo) received a Distinguished Service Award. The family of deceased officer Detective Wenjian Liu of the New York Police Department (NYPD), who was last year fatally shot, also received an honor for their sacrifice.

On June 30, AABANY’s Prosecutors Committee held their 7th Annual Reception at Brooklyn Law School, honoring Deputy U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon H. Kim and the family of fallen hero Detective Wenjian Liu. Read our highlight here.

On June 30 at Brooklyn Law School, the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) gathered for the 7th Annual Prosecutors Reception with different affinity bar members (KALAGNY, SABANY, etc.) and state and federal prosecutors. During the Prosecutors Reception, they honored the fallen police officer Wenjian Liu. The fallen police officer’s father shared stories of his son, which touched all of the audience members and brought them to tears. ADA Kin Ng translated the fallen police officer’s father’s stories of how Wenjian Liu loved helping people and making a change.

Kin Ng also told his story of the first time he met Det. Liu’s parents, which brought back his memories of his own parents:

Right when I entered his house, “[Det. Liu’s] father said to me, “Are you hungry?” I responded, “I am not hungry.” As with many other Asian parents, they insisted that I should have something to eat.

During the ceremony, Wenjian Liu’s father, mother, and widow received a standing ovation along with a salute.

Prosecutors from the five boroughs of New York were represented at the event. Preet Bharara, famously known for prosecuting Sheldon Silver, since he took his position, has attended every event each year. He also gave remarks. He hopes to increase the presence of Asian Americans in law enforcement and hopes that Asian Americans can bring justice everywhere as well.

Deputy U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon Kim was presented with an award. During his speech, he pointed out that the role of prosecutors is difficult, but that whatever we do, we have to do it the right way and the proper way. His proudest achievement is to be able to tell his 4-year-old son that he brings people to justice, just like Batman.

Cadwalader Partner, Federal Judge Broaden Scope of Re-Enactments

“Some 150 lawyers came to watch a re-enactment produced by Cadwalader litigation partner Kathy Chin and her husband, Judge Denny Chin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. For nearly a decade the pair have been re-enacting important cases in Asian-American legal history for live audiences with help from members of the Asian American Bar Association of New York.”

Nell Gluckman, of The American Lawyer, recently spotlighted Hon. Denny Chin and Kathy Hirata Chin’s work in leading historical trial reenactments in, “Cadwalader Partner, Federal Judge Broaden Scope of Reenactments.”

An important educational tool for attorneys, the trial reenactments have highlighted the history of Asian Americans in the law. The Chins are now planning to broaden the scope of topics covered. Whatever case they choose next, we trust their talent and judgment and look forward to the thought-provoking questions and conversations that they will inevitably bring up.

NAPABA Voter Eligibility: Deadline Extension July 22

To be eligible to vote in this year’s elections, you must be a direct NAPABA member OR activate your NAPABA affiliate membership online. NAPABA has extended the deadline to July 22!

AABANY is an affiliate of NAPABA. If you are an active member of AABANY and eligible to vote, you should have received information from us about how to activate your NAPABA affiliate membership. If you did not receive this email, contact Margaret Langston at [email protected].

Being an active affiliate member will not be sufficient for voting purposes beginning this year! You must activate your NAPABA membership! For more information about NAPABA’s membership changes, click here. Please also consider reviewing NAPABA’s Membership FAQs Sheet.

If you have already received a code from AABANY, please proceed to activation with the following instructions.

  1. Visit: http://www.napaba.org/login.aspx
  2. Enter your email address and the password [password1]
  3. Click manage profile to renew your membership.
  4. Follow the steps to update your profile.
  5. On the last and final page enter the code from your affiliate in the promotional code box. Click “apply code”.

If you receive an error that says username and password combination not found, please click here to register and proceed with the following instructions:
