The Economy vs. Immigration: What Will Unlock the Latino Vote in 2012?

A Panel Presented by Feet in Two Worlds, the Center for New York City Affairs, Global Studies at The New School, Americas Society/Council of the Americas, and Latino USA.

Latino voters are expected to play a pivotal role in the U.S. presidential election, especially in several key battleground states. Join us for a town hall event that brings together journalists, pollsters, and policy experts to explore the complex relationship between the Latino electorate and the candidates. Will economic concerns such as unemployment and housing foreclosures guide Latinos at the voting booth? Will the candidates’ immigration policies dominate? Or will large numbers of Latinos simply sit out this election? Understanding the political cross-currents buffeting Latinos today will provide valuable insight on the probable outcome of the election, as well as political and policy implications for the nation over the next four years.

Moderated by Latino USA executive producer and anchor Maria Hinojosa, the panel includes the New York Immigration Coalition’s executive director, Chung-Wha Hong. Please join us for a timely and compelling discussion focused on immigrants, immigration, and the 2012 elections.

AALDEF Seeking Tamil Volunteer Interpreter

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund is seeking a volunteer interpreter who is fluent in Tamil to conduct a one-hour phone call.  The consultation may take place by telephone in the evening later this week or early next week.  Interested volunteers should contact Shirley Lin at [email protected] regarding their availability.

On October 3, 2012, Citi Commercial Bank and AABANY hosted a successful CLE dinner event: “Understanding the Foreign Purchaser in New York City.” The event took place at The Holiday Inn in Soho and was attended by 65 attorneys and real estate professionals. Thanks to the support of David Lau, Senior Vice President of Citi Commercial Bank. Distinguished panelists included AABANY Chairpersons: Margaret Ling, Esq., Chair of the Real Estate Committee; Pauline Yeung-Ha,Esq., Co-Chair of the Solo/Small Firm Practice Committee; Tsui Yee, Esq., Co-Chair of the Immigration and Nationality Law Committee; Michael Rudder, Principal of The Rudder Group and Grace Chan, Vice President of The Corcoran Group. Panel Moderator was Wendy Yu, Esq., Co-Chair of the Solo/Small Firm Practice Committee. The subject matter focused on many interesting facets of the foreign purchaser acquiring NYC property and included discussions of estate tax issues; EB-5 Visas; representing the foreign purchaser in a contract of sale; the state of the office condo market in NYC; and the relevancy of feng shui. The event was so well received that Citi and AABANY will plan future events to further focus on the subject matter.

Congratulations to Judy Kim, NAPABA NE Regional Governor

Judy KimAABANY congratulates long-time member and current Membership Secretary Judy Kim on being selected as NAPABA Northeast Regional Governor.  As such Judy sits on the NAPABA Board of Governors for a two-year term.  The Northeast Region encompasses 10 states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.  It also includes Canada.

“I am so honored to be selected as the next NAPABA Northeast Regional Governor,” says Judy, “and I look forward to working alongside my co-RG, Jason Leung, the NE Region’s Presidents and the Board during my term to further NAPABA’s mission and the Region’s goals.  Hope to see everyone at the DC Convention in November!”

Judy H. Kim is an associate counsel in the Bureau & Estates Litigation Section of the Legal Division at the New York Liquidation Bureau. The Bureau is a unique 100 year old quasi-state agency that assists the Superintendent of Financial Services of the State of New York in his capacity as receiver of insolvent insurance companies. She has been with the Bureau since 2008. During that time, she has been involved in all aspects of litigation involving the Superintendent and the estates in his receivership. From December 2010 through June 2011, Ms. Kim was interim Section Chief of the Bureau & Estates Litigation Section. Prior to joining the Bureau, Ms. Kim worked at Snitow Kanfer Holtzer & Millus, LLP as an attorney focusing on commercial litigation, employment discrimination litigation, and matrimonial litigation matters. Ms. Kim began her legal career at Kennedy Lillis Schmidt & English, a boutique maritime law firm. Ms. Kim received her J.D. from Tulane Law School, and her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Judy served as Treasurer of the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) from 2002 through 2005, and was Co-Chair of AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee from 2006-2008, and has been a member of AABANY’s Litigation Committee since 2000.

She is a member of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, Secretary of the Korean American Lawyers’ Association of Greater New York, and a Steering Committee Member of the Korean American League for Civic Action. Ms. Kim is also a member of the Diversity Committee at The Spence School and a member of the Leadership Committee at the Young Survival Coalition.

Congratulations to Justice Hinds-Radix and Justice Clark

AABANY joins the MBBA in congratulating Justice Hinds-Radix and Justice Clark on their elevation to the Appellate Division.

Dear MBBA Members and Supporters:

On behalf of the Officers and Directors of the Metropolitan Black Bar Association (“MBBA”), we are pleased to announce that the Honorable Sylvia Hinds-Radix has been appointed to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, Second Department.

It is our pleasure to have the opportunity to extend our sincere congratulations to Justice Hinds-Radix, who is currently the Administrative Judge for Civil Matters in Kings County and a member of the MBBA’s Board of Directors.  We are certain that she will bring to the bench a wealth of experience as a committed and active jurist and legal practitioner.  She has repeatedly demonstrated a strong commitment to the principles of fairness and justice, the improvement of the legal system, and the advancement of the members of our diverse community.   Justice Hinds-Radix’s record of achievement shows that she possesses all of the attributes necessary to succeed in this position and her reputation is widely respected by us all.

We also extend our congratulations to the Honorable Darcel Clark, Past President and Chair of the Board of the Black Bar Association of Bronx County, who has also been appointed to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, First Department.  Justice Clark has served a Supreme Court Justice in Bronx County since 2006.   She too has demonstrated a commendable record of achievement, public service, and dedication to the pursuit of justice duly warranting her appointment.

AABANY Applauds the Appointment of Randall T. Eng as Presiding Justice, App. Div., 2nd Dept.

NEW YORK – October 3, 2012 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) welcomes and applauds the news that New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has appointed Randall T. Eng to serve as the Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court for the Second Judicial Department. Justice Eng will be the first Asian American to serve as a Presiding Justice in New York State’s history. “Justice Eng is a distinguished jurist and respected leader in both the legal and Asian Pacific American communities and AABANY applauds Governor Cuomo’s historic appointment. With this appointment, Justice Eng adds to his long list of notable ‘firsts,’ such as being the first Asian Pacific American Assistant District Attorney in the Queens County District Attorney’s office, for which AABANY’s Prosecutors’ Committee honored him at their third anniversary reception last year,” said Jean Lee, President of AABANY.  Read more here.
