MinKwon is Hiring! (Immigration Paralegal)

The MinKwon Center for Community Action is seeking someone to fill the position of Immigration Paralegal.

Help us find a new member of the MinKwon family!  In response to the Obama Administration’s new “deferred action” program for undocumented DREAM youth, we’re looking for a paralegal/outreach coordinator to help provide services, education and outreach to undocumented Korean American youth. 

Job Descriptions

The immigration paralegal will work on the following:

  • Engage in direct contact with clients on a daily basis, which includes performing initial intakes, assessing clients’ cases, and providing direct assistance
  • Prepare and conduct educational workshops for community members on relevant immigration and other important legal and social issues
  • Work with custom case management system

Informational Sessions on Deferred Action for DREAMers

The New York Immigration Coalition will provide several informational sessions on President Obama’s June 15th announcement about Deferred Action for certain young people who were brought into the United States through no fault of their own.

Come get the latest news on Deferred Action. Learn what Deferred Action is and who is eligible for it under this program.

We have already received reports that notarios and other unscrupulous people are trying to scam immigrants by calling this program an amnesty or a way to get your green card.  That is false.  The Deferred Action program is not an amnesty.  Come to one of our sessions and get accurate up-to-date information about this program.  These informational sessions are not legal clinics.  

Where:         The New York Immigration Coalition, 137-139 West 25th Street, 12th Floor, New York, NY 10001 (Between 6th &  7thAvenues).  The closest subway stops are 23rd Street on #1, F, and M and 28th Street on #1.

Stories Through Paper Exhibition

From Aesop’s Fables and the Brothers Grimm to Tinker Bell and Harry Potter, the Charles B. Wang Center’s 8th Annual Origami Heaven Exhibition celebrates Stories through Paper recreated and interpreted by esteemed origami artists from around the world. Join us to delight in intricate folded-paper tableaux of beloved stories, myths, and characters, and to learn new stories from past and present, home and abroad.

In addition to the exhibition, we offer folding sessions with origami artists every day at 12:00 PM.

Recommended admission fee and raffle draw: $5

NYIC Orientation on Deferred Action

August 15: Orientation on Deferred Action

On August 15, 2012, many young undocumented immigrants will be allowed to apply for a temporary work permit and deferred action relief.  

All across the country, immigrant rights groups are organizing legal workshops for youth who might be interested in applying.  In New York, The New York Immigration Coalition and its partners will hold an orientation workshop on:

ASIAN AMERICAN GROUPS HOSTED A MOVIE NIGHT TO SEE AI WEIWEI: NEVER SORRY

On Wednesday , August 1, Asian American organizations [including AABANY] hosted a special Movie Night at the IFC Center to see Alison Klayman critically-acclaimed new documentary film, “Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry”.  Many attendees took advantage of the IFC promo code at the box office for this particular showing of the film. Others who cared more about convenience than the IFC community ticket promo bought their tickets on www.movietickets.com ahead of time.

One of the Asian American groups, Asian Cinevision, included this message, in its event announcement, “AI WEI WEI NEVER SORRY follows Ai Wei Wei, a political delinquent, who challenges the notion of freedom through his art and conceptual work. In a country that celebrates censorship, he makes us imagine possibilities beyond limitations: what does it mean to use art as a political tool? Ultimately, he puts out a call for transparency, but how will the Chinese government respond?”

Based on our count, 150 people came out. The crowd was multigenerational and multicultural with a wide range of reactions to the film. Attendees we spoke with told us they have no idea about what Ai Weiwei faced in China.  Like what Ai Weiwei said in the film, “If it is not publicized, then it is like it never happened.” So if this film was not made or if the video footage was not taken or if people have not watched this film, then how would they know what happened.  Where’s the proof, baby?  I wrote some more about this film in this blog post, "Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry – Do not Wei to see this! On a yummy note, the @NesquikLiveNYC street team were nearby to hand out free bottles of Nesquik chocolate milks! Some of the moviegoers got their chocolate fix on Nesquik.  Thanks Nesquik. 

It was a wonderful night – chocolate milk and all!
