Free Legal Help for Artists

PRO BONO LEGAL SUPPORT 

The New York Foundation for the Arts and New York State Bar Association’s Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Committee (EASL) have partnered to provide pro bono legal help for low-income artists and arts organizations. EASL will be offering a legal clinic at NYFA free of charge for those who qualify for pro bono legal consultation on Thursday, November 17th, from 4:00pm- 7:00pm. The pro bono attorneys can offer advice on various arts-related issues such as intellectual property, nonprofit, and contract questions.

On October 29, AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee presented the Upstate Roadshow.  Held at Syracuse Law School, a contingent of lawyers from downstate and from the Syracuse area visited with law students from Syracuse Law School and University of Buffalo Law School to talk about AABANY, exam writing, resume writing and interviewing skills and practical skills required to succeed in the legal profession.  Thanks to Mark Sweeney from Syracuse Law School and Melle Xu from University of Buffalo Law School for working with AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee to make the event happen.  Thanks to Mary Trainor, Shelly Tsai and Josephine Yang Pat-yi, attorneys from Syracuse, for participating in the panels.  Thanks to Liza Sohn and Ben Chan, co-chairs of the Student Outreach Committee for planning and organizing the event.  Thanks to Chris Chan, Yang Chen, Francis Chin, Will Ng and Thomas Hou for their involvement.  Thanks also to Bond Schoeneck & King for co-sponsoring the event.  We enjoyed meeting with the students and attorneys upstate and we look forward to staying in touch and working with them in the future.

Clerkship Opportunity: Justice Goodwin Liu, California Supreme Court

Associate Justice Goodwin Liu of the California Supreme Court is hiring two law clerks, each for an 18- to 24-month term. One position will begin in January 2012; the other will begin in fall 2012. Applicants must have a strong academic record, excellent research and writing skills, and demonstrated ability to learn quickly and work collaboratively. Applicants who are one to five years out of law school and who have previously clerked for a federal appellate court are strongly preferred. The position is based in San Francisco.

NYCLA Forum on November 2 to Focus on Judicial Independence

On Wednesday, November 2, the New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA) is hosting a free forum, “Should a Judge Be Required to Face Accusations in a Public Forum? Is Justice Mute?,” at the Home of Law on 14 Vesey Street from 6:00-8:00 PM. Judicial experts will be discussing:

  • What resources are available to an investigative journalist to present a balanced story;
  • What the press’ responsibility is to ensure balanced reporting of public accusations against a judge;
  • What meaningful due process protections should be provided to a judge who stands accused in a public setting; and
  • The debate over whether judicial disciplinary hearings should be open or closed.

The forum is free and open to the public.  This program is sponsored by the NYCLA Justice Center and Task Force on Judicial Independence, which comprises lawyers, judges and academics and was established in 2006 in keeping with the Association’s long history of commitment to an independent judiciary.
