Please join us on Thursday, Oct. 29 for a special benefit preview of George Takei’s new musical on Broadway, Allegiance.  George will join us for a Q&A after the performance, so you don’t want to miss this wonderful AALDEF event!

Allegiance is a multi-generational tale about family, freedom, love, and loss as Japanese Americans were incarcerated in camps during World War II.  It is inspired by the true-life experience of its star, George Takei, the recipient of AALDEF’s 1992 Justice in Action award and a beloved actor (Star Trek), social justice activist, and social media icon.  The musical also features Tony Award winner Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon, Les Miserables) and Telly Leung (Rent, Glee).  Allegiance had its premiere in 2012 at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego.  It will be the first time in thirteen years that an Asian-led cast has been on Broadway since the revival of Flower Drum Song.

Press Release: NAPABA Commends White House Plans to Reunite Filipino American WWII Veterans with Their Families

WASHINGTON – The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) applauds the White House for announcing plans on Wednesday for a parole program that would allow Filipino American World War II veterans to be reunited with their families. This program was announced as part of a Visa Modernization Task Force report.

“NAPABA commends the Administration for improving our immigration system and for honoring the sacrifices many Filipino veterans have made for our country,” said George C. Chen, president of NAPABA. “This action has been long overdue as these World War II veterans have waited decades to be reunited with their families, including their children.”  

During World War II, more than 260,000 Filipino soldiers fought for the United States and were promised citizenship and benefits in honor of their service. After finally being granted eligibility for citizenship decades after their wartime service, these veterans were able to petition for family members to immigrate to the United States. However, family visa backlogs have kept many of these families separated for more than 20 years.

The APAICS (Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies) Regional Leadership is a two-day leadership and political training program for Asian American and Pacific Islanders seeking to run for public office, current elected officials, and community stakeholders. The program includes interactive leadership and political training, networking opportunities and policy round-table discussions.
