The ‘Business Case’ for Diversity & Inclusion:  Lessons Learned from In-House, Government, and Law Firm Counsel

Today’s economic climate is one of constant change.  Increased regulatory compliance, technological innovation, low interest rates, and other factors have together created a highly challenging business environment.  In order to remain competitive, companies and law firms are placing a growing emphasis on legal teams that are resilient, creative, and diverse.  Governmental entities are also beginning to recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion in their recruiting efforts.

This panel discusses the growing awareness that diversity and inclusion are not only helpful, but also critical towards the success of an enterprise.  Senior in-house, government, and law firm counsels will discuss how staffing diverse legal teams has driven superior business results and contributed towards their organizations’ success.  This panel will also discuss unique opportunities that exist for teams that can successfully apply diversity and inclusion to their practices.  Finally, the panel will also discuss how APA attorneys may position themselves to identify and help meet these needs, stepping forward as leaders during this critical juncture.

Congratulations to Grace Meng

After a historic Democratic National Convention in which Hillary Clinton became the first woman to be nominated for President by a major political party, more history was made when Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) was elected Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee.

“I will bring to this role the same commitment to elevating diverse voices that has driven so much of my public service,” said Congresswoman Meng. “I will work tirelessly to elect leaders who will take on vital issues like immigration reform and gun safety. I will bring our energy and passion to work within the DNC to ensure it represents Democrats from all walks of life and all corners of our party.”

Before she was elected to public office, she was an attorney and a member of AABANY. Please join us in congratulating Congresswoman Meng on her election to the leadership of the Democratic National Committee.

NAPABA believes that the active participation of members, affiliates, and national associates is essential to a vibrant and progressive organization and encourages the engagement of its members in the nomination and election process. To facilitate the involvement of members and related entities, NAPABA provides an endorsement process by which members can inform one another about candidate qualifications and support candidates through endorsements, advertisements, articles, and other means. Any eligible individual, affiliate, national associate, or other entity (except for the current members of the Committee and NAPABA staff) may endorse any candidate. Further, although no individual member of the Committee shall officially endorse any candidate, the Committee member may provide information regarding any candidate. Candidate materials, including candidate statements, may contain a list of endorsements.

NCVAA 10th Annual Conference &VABANC 18th Annual Scholarship Dinner | October 14-15, 2016, San Jose, CA

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

The National Conference of Vietnamese American Attorneys (NCVAA) is pleased to announce that the 10th Annual Conference will be held on October 14-15, 2016 in San Jose, California. The 2016 conference will take place in conjunction with the Vietnamese American Bar Association of Northern California’s (VABANC) 18th Annual Scholarship Dinner on Friday, October 14, 2016. VABANC is honored to co-host the combined event this year as NCVAA returns to San Jose, where VABANC co-hosted the very first conference in 2006. This year’s conference, based on the theme “Innovate”, provides an opportunity for attendees to network with attorneys, members of the judiciary, prominent legal scholars, jurists, and law students from all over the nation. Attorneys can receive valuable continuing legal education (CLE) credits on a number of stimulating current topics taught by scholars and practitioners.

VABANC STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP Deadline: August 1, 2016 

VABANC is now accepting applications for its 2016 Scholarship Awards. The scholarship deadline has been extended to August 1, 2016. 

Open to all currently enrolled law students, the scholarships are intended to provide assistance to students toward their public interest or social justice goals.  

The 2016 scholarship recipients will be recognized during VABANC’s 18th Annual Scholarship Dinner on Friday, October 14, 2016. Attendance at the scholarship dinner is mandatory (i.e., the award is contingent on attendance). Click here for the scholarship application. 


NCVAA | JUNG FOUNDATION PUBLIC INTEREST SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: September 12, 2016

NCVAA and the Charles & Melita Jung Foundation (Jung Foundation) are sponsoring a public interest scholarship to the NCVAA 10th Annual Conference. The scholarship is intended to encourage and make it easier for public interest attorneys to participate in NCVAA.

The award consists of the following: (1) Flight: the recipient will receive a domestic round trip ticket to San Jose, CA on Southwest Airlines, or reimbursement for a domestic round trip ticket up to $450; (2) Registration Fee: the conference registration fee will be waived by NCVAA; and (3) Hotel Stay: reimbursement for a 2-night stay at the Fairmont San Jose Hotel, up to $346.

Reimbursements will be net of any other scholarships received. All U.S.-based public interest attorneys are invited to apply. The application deadline is Monday, September 12, 2016 (but the applicants will be considered on a rolling basis beginning 8/19/16, so the earlier the better).

A Shot in the Dark:  The Peter Liang/Akai Gurley Tragedy

Akai Gurley, a 28-year-old African-American man, was fatally shot on November 20, 2014, in Brooklyn’s Louis H. Pink Houses, by rookie NYPD Officer Peter Liang, who had entered a stairwell with his firearm drawn. The shooting was declared an accidental discharge; the bullet ricocheted off the wall and Gurley was struck once in the chest and later died from the shot. On February 10, 2015, Liang was indicted by a grand jury on manslaughter, assault, and other criminal charges, and on February 11, 2016, Liang was found guilty of manslaughter and official misconduct, becoming the first NYPD officer in over a decade to be found guilty of shooting and killing a citizen while on duty. The shooting and trial touched off a firestorm of opinion and protests, and in the post-Ferguson era, the case has added another twist to the intense ongoing debate about race and accountability in policing, as well as the Asian American community’s place in that debate and race relations.

This panel will explore criminal procedural issues in the context of the Peter Liang trial, such as the indictment and grand jury process, what is the standard for homicide versus manslaughter, and will also look at the civil rights aspect of the case. How did the APA community respond to the tragedy and what can we learn from it going forward?
