In the summer of 1986, the South Korean government decided to open a special summer camp for the offspring of Korean immigrants around the world, so that they could reconnect with their heritage and learn what it means to be Korean. Based on true events, SEOUL SEARCHING follows a group of students during this summer as they struggle to connect with one another, but end up ultimately finding themselves.
Sid is a punker from LA who has serious issues with authority, including Mr. Kim, the head teacher of his class who harbors a painful secret. Sid gets into a romance with Grace, a pastor’s kid from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, who worships and embodies Madonna. Sergio is a Mexican womanizer who loves fiestas and senoritas, but meets his match in Sue-jin, a feminist-in-the-making. Klaus hails from Hamburg, Germany and helps Kris, an adoptee, find and reconnect with her birth mother. This group along with hip-hop inspired rappers from Queens, a military enthusiast, the pretentious Brit. Bitch, and many more capture the emotion and angst of youth in an era where teens were naïve, politically incorrect, polarized by cliques, and knew nothing about the world.

During our Annual AABANY/AALFNY Summer Reception on July 20, we celebrated the opportunities afforded to diverse law students in the Joint Minority Bar Judicial Internship Program (JMB JIP), the Asian American Law Fund of New York’s Community Scholarship Award Recipient Kamille Go, and the accomplishments of NYC Commissioner of Human Rights Carmelyn Malalis. We had over 170 attorneys, judges, and law students registered to attend.
JMB JIP is a collaborative effort between AABANY, AALFNY, the Asian American Judges Association of New York, Association of Judges of Hispanic Heritage, Metropolitan Black Bar Association, the New York Women’s Bar Association Foundation, Inc., the Puerto Rican Bar Association, and the South Asian Bar Association of New York to offer law students with a strong commitment to diversity to enhance and complement their legal education as summer judicial interns in New York metropolitan area courthouses.
This reception not only offered the chance to celebrate but to connect in a welcome environment for mentorship and guidance. We thank the many law firms who sponsored this program and made it possible, including the evening’s host for the night, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.

Please join us on Thursday, Oct. 29 for a special benefit preview of George Takei’s new musical on Broadway, Allegiance. George will join us for a Q&A after the performance, so you don’t want to miss this wonderful AALDEF event!
Allegiance is a multi-generational tale about family, freedom, love, and loss as Japanese Americans were incarcerated in camps during World War II. It is inspired by the true-life experience of its star, George Takei, the recipient of AALDEF’s 1992 Justice in Action award and a beloved actor (Star Trek), social justice activist, and social media icon. The musical also features Tony Award winner Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon, Les Miserables) and Telly Leung (Rent, Glee). Allegiance had its premiere in 2012 at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. It will be the first time in thirteen years that an Asian-led cast has been on Broadway since the revival of Flower Drum Song.

Press Release: NAPABA Commends White House Plans to Reunite Filipino American WWII Veterans with Their Families

WASHINGTON – The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) applauds the White House for announcing plans on Wednesday for a parole program that would allow Filipino American World War II veterans to be reunited with their families. This program was announced as part of a Visa Modernization Task Force report.
“NAPABA commends the Administration for improving our immigration system and for honoring the sacrifices many Filipino veterans have made for our country,” said George C. Chen, president of NAPABA. “This action has been long overdue as these World War II veterans have waited decades to be reunited with their families, including their children.”
During World War II, more than 260,000 Filipino soldiers fought for the United States and were promised citizenship and benefits in honor of their service. After finally being granted eligibility for citizenship decades after their wartime service, these veterans were able to petition for family members to immigrate to the United States. However, family visa backlogs have kept many of these families separated for more than 20 years.
