American Bar Association Spirit of Excellence Award Nomination

Due Monday, May 22, 2017 | 5 p.m. EDT

Each year, the NAPABA Awards Committee reviews the pool of well-qualified NAPABA members and selects an individual to be nominated on behalf of NAPABA for the ABA Spirit of Excellence Award. Most recently, NAPABA nominated Hon. Jacqueline Nguyen and Peggy Nagae, both of whom were honored with this prestigious award in 2015 and 2017, respectively. The Awards Committee now seeks nominee recommendations for consideration of the 2018 award.

The Committee is looking for NAPABA members who have:

  1. achieved professional excellence in their fields;
  2. served as role models in overcoming hardships or barriers and achieved success and excellence in the legal profession;
  3. influenced racially and ethnically diverse individuals to pursue and/or to succeed in legal careers;
  4. opened doors, broken down barriers, or otherwise promoted the full and equal participation of racially and ethnically diverse individuals in the legal profession; and
  5. worked with or on behalf of racially and ethnically diverse lawyers from racial or ethnic groups other than their own.

SENATOR MAZIE K. HIRONO TO BE HONORED BY THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION

From the NAPABA February 2017 Monthly Update:

The American Bar Association plans to honor Senator Mazie K. Hirono for her efforts to advance immigration reform, to improve access to legal services, and particularly to seek the elimination of discrimination.

Senator Hirono is one of four members of Congress who will receive the ABA Justice Award on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, as part of ABA Day in Washington, D.C. at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Senator Hirono is the only woman and the only person of color who will be receiving the ABA Justice Award this year. She was nominated by four former NAPABA presidents — Wendy Shiba, Ruthe Ashley, Paul Lee, and Amy Lin Meyerson — as well as Margaret Masunaga.

ABA Presidential Appointments – NAPABA Endorsements Deadline Jan. 29

NAPABA needs your help and involvement to ensure that Asian Pacific Americans are represented in the ranks of the American Bar Association leadership. We encourage you to self-nominate for a Presidential Committee Appointment by the ABA deadline of Feb. 26, 2016. 

In addition to your self-nomination, NAPABA will be recommending candidates for appointments to committees, commissions, and other ABA entities for the upcoming bar year. To be considered for a NAPABA endorsement, you must submit a request to NAPABA by 12 p.m. EST on Jan. 29, 2016.

Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession

Congratulations to AABANY Past President Sylvia Chin, who has recently accepted an appointment to the American Bar Association Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity within the Profession!

Throughout her career, Sylvia has demonstrated a deep commitment to the promotion of racial and ethnic equality. As chair of the ABA Business Law Section’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and her work with other Bar Associations, she works to share best practices and to ensure that issues facing minorities are addressed, whether they be education, pipeline, recruitment, promotion or leadership. Karen Wu recognized as Outstanding Young Lawyer by ABA Nonprofit Organizations Committee

AABANY congratulates past Pro Bono and Community Service Committee Co-Chair Karen I. Wu on her recent recognition as an outstanding young lawyer by the Nonprofit Organizations Committee of the American Bar Association’s Business Law Section. This award is given each year "for distinguished service by an attorney in the nonprofit sector who is under the age of 35 or has been in practice less than 10 years.“ (Follow the link in the title to read the press release.) Karen was also recognized in 2012 by the New York State Bar Association as an Outstanding Young Lawyer (photo below). Congratulations, Karen, and well done!
