AABANY Co-sponsors ABA Section of International Law 2014 Spring Meeting

AABANY and the ABA Section of International Law invite you to attend the 2014 Spring Meeting from April 1-5, 2014 at the Waldorf Astoria New York.  ABA International’s Spring Meeting is one of the world’s most important gatherings of international lawyers and we anticipate this year’s conference to break all attendance records with over 1,500 leading attorneys, corporate counsel, government officials, academics and NGO lawyers expected to attend. This conference will offer cutting edge programming on international legal and ethics issues, as well as amazing networking opportunities with colleagues, decision makers, and potential clients from around the world.  In addition, the meeting will feature a complimentary day of programming for Corporate Counsel on April 2nd and evening receptions at some of the most exclusive venues in New York City.

The more than 70 substantive CLE sessions at the 2014 Spring Meeting will feature prominent speakers from start to finish, making it a “must-attend” meeting for lawyers with a practice or interest in international legal issues. The meeting begins Wednesday morning with Courageous Counsel, including prominent women General Counsels from the Fortune 500, and concludes Friday afternoon with a look at the future of the legal profession with former Senator Evan Bayh, the Honorable Judith Kaye, Bernard Nussbaum, Richard Revesz, and Frederic Ury.  In between, you can hear from many prominent speakers, including Chancellor Leo Strine from the Delaware Court of Chancery and Lord Michael Burton, Chief Judge of Commercial Courts, Royal Courts of Justice, London.

Lawyers and accountants to strengthen crime-fighting partnerships

FORENSIC ACCOUNTING CONFERENCE OCT. 24 in NYC

NEW YORK (September 30, 2013) – Forensic accountants investigate an ever-increasing list of financial crimes that includes money laundering, Ponzi schemes, embezzlement, insurance, procurement and securities fraud. Actively sought out by the legal profession, these certified public accountants have advanced knowledge of accounting and data-analysis techniques and are often deemed part investigator, part auditor, part attorney and part accountant.

The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) and its Foundation for Accounting Education (FAE) aims to expand the emerging business understandings between attorneys and accountants at its half-day “Forensic Accounting Conference for Attorneys and CPAs” October 24 in New York City.

“The forensic accounting field is a mature field with plenty of business opportunities for CPAs and attorneys alike,” said Yigal Rechtman, CPA, CFE and the Forensic conference chairman. “One important way to nurture the healthy relationship between the two professions is for us to get together and learn from one another about the unique characteristics of each profession.”

The agenda for the event – to be held at the Citi Conference Center, 388 Greenwich Street, 3rd Floor – will focus on 1) accountants’ level of services, 2) lost profit damages, 3) a primer on preventive and detective internal controls, and 4) best practices and challenges in forensic computing.

Key presenters scheduled to speak at the conference include:

Mentors Needed for Legal Outreach

Thanks to Board member Will Ng for sharing this call for mentors from Legal Outreach. Please read and respond to the call if you are available to help out.

At Legal Outreach, we focus on helping underserved students matriculate to top colleges and universities. We have been very successful in our efforts, as every one of our students graduates from high school, 85% complete college within four years, and 14% go on to become lawyers themselves.

We achieve these results through comprehensive programming that includes internships for the students at law firms and public interest organizations, SAT prep, after-school tutoring, and academic counseling. We also run a Constitutional Law Debate Program where students read fact patterns, analyze case-law, prepare briefs, and perfect oral arguments for constitutional law debates.  

All students in our program are assigned an Attorney  Mentor. These mentors are lawyers from major legal services firms, non-profit organizations, and government agencies throughout New York City. We are currently recruiting 50 attorneys to be mentors to our rising-sophomores. Attorney Mentors play an integral role in the success of our program and, based on surveys, students have credited much of their academic, personal, and professional accomplishments to the guidance and support they have received from their mentors.  

Mentoring is a low-commitment, high reward volunteer activity. Although we do ask that our mentors commit to mentoring a student from their sophomore through senior years of high school, mentoring is only a 4 hour per month commitment. Mentors help students with their constitutional law debate preparation and provide academic and personal counseling to our students. Mentors also receive 3 CLE credits each reporting cycle for participating in our Attorney Mentoring Program.
