Closing out the 2023 fiscal year, the Bankruptcy Committee met for dinner on March 15, 2023 in K-Town’s Nubiani located on the corner of 32nd Street and Fifth Avenue. Attendees included private sector practitioners, public sector professionals, in-house attorneys, and a current law student.
Committee members engaged in lively discussions about topical issues in restructuring, including the recent spate of crypto-related insolvencies. The Committee looks forward to more outings in the upcoming fiscal year which starts on April 1. To learn more about the Committee, click here.
On February 21, 2023, AABANY’s Student Outreach & Bankruptcy Committees hosted a virtual panel discussion to inform students about different career pathways for bankruptcy attorneys. The event ran from 6-7pm virtually on Zoom. The panel was moderated by Student Outreach Committee Co-Chairs Sharon Yang and Charlene Hong and featured the following panelists:
· Courina Yulisa (Dorsey & Whitney LLP)
· Patrick Chen (Morgan Stanley)
· Jacqueline Tran (Law Clerk to SDNY Bankruptcy Judge Sean H. Lane)
· Annie Wells (U.S. Trustee Program, Department of Justice)
Panelists discussed the difference between bankruptcy and restructuring and the unique characteristics of bankruptcy as a legal practice. In particular, the panelists highlighted how litigation and transactional skills overlap within a bankruptcy practice group at a firm. The discussion also covered the day-to-day of a bankruptcy law clerk, the various hats an in-house counsel must wear, and the role of a government attorney in the U.S. Trustee Program. The main takeaways included the importance of seeking various internships and opportunities to gain exposure to bankruptcy practice, and the value of networking with bankruptcy attorneys to understand their various roles.
AABANY thanks the Student Outreach and Bankruptcy Committees for organizing the event and all panelists, moderators, and students who attended. On Tuesday, January 24, forty AABANY members, family and friends celebrated Lunar New Year at Madison Square Garden as the Knicks took on the Cleveland Cavaliers. The night was filled with memorable moments: The New Asia Chamber Music Society performed the national anthem and there was a special lion dance performance during halftime. Two of our members caught t-shirts that were fired into the crowd by cannons and during the third quarter AABANY even got a shoutout on the Garden Vision big screen. And to cap it all off, the Knicks won a nail biter by a score of 105-103.
On August 6, 2021, the Membership and Bankruptcy Committees co-hosted an in-person membership mixer at Yankee Stadium where the New York Yankees played the Seattle Mariners. 25 members had a blast as they eagerly watched all the on-field action from behind the outfield. Catch this: they also received a free bobblehead of one of the Yankee players (Gerrit Cole). It was a no-doubter that old friends and new had a great time attending America’s pastime in a night filled with conversation, cold drinks, and memories. Kudos to the Bankruptcy Committee once again for making this exciting night a win!
Next in our star-studded Membership Committee events lineup include a cruise around the Hudson River, billiards and arcade night, dinner mixers, and an in-person Talent Show, with details to follow. Stay tuned and don’t strike out on them! If you’re not a member yet, sign up to be a part of the team. On Friday, June 14, 2019, AABANY’s Membership and Bankruptcy Committees co-sponsored a Mets Game outing with members, friends, and family at Citi Field.
We took up two rows of seats in the upper decks, with an expansive view of the stadium from left field. It was a beautiful (but slightly chilly and windy) late spring night for a game. The Mets played the Cleveland Indians, and we all got free t-shirts, but no one was sure whose face was on it. Our crowd included both fans and non-fans, and some very young future fans.
Thanks to everyone who came out to the ball game. The Membership Committee has already lined up an outing at Yankee Stadium in August, and we hope to see you there. Stay tuned for details.
