Thank you to our April Pro Bono Clinic Volunteers!

April’s Monthly Pro Bono Clinic, held on Wednesday, April 10 at 33 Bowery Street in Confucius Plaza, brought out 20 lawyers and 8 interpreters who volunteered their time to help 32 clients.

At this month’s clinic, we also presented videos created in partnership with AARP to prevent immigration fraud. In the videos, former Immigration Law Committee co-chairs Susan Akina and Amanda Bernardo provided tips and advice on how to avoid being a victim of immigration scams. Scammers pretend to provide quality legal advice, help with paperwork, or other tasks involved in the immigration process. The scammer usually asks for an upfront fee, takes the money, and disappears immediately. Or worse, they provide ineffective or even harmful representation by filing the wrong paperwork, using fraudulent measures, or misrepresenting facts. Susan and Amanda stressed how important it is to only work with qualified immigration lawyers.

Chinatown Community Welcomes Groups Providing Free Legal Consultations

In New York City, due to language and cultural barriers, many immigrants have questions about US laws. Several legal organizations in the city have started to cooperate with the community organizations to provide legal assistance. One such instance occurred yesterday night as the pro bono legal clinic in Chinatown attracted many participants.

The Executive Director of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of NY (“CCCNY”), Justin Chin-Shan Yu, said: “[The level of interest] shows that Asian really need legal assistance, which includes legal questions about immigration, family, housing, and benefits. The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) can provide bilingual lawyers to answer questions.”

At the legal clinic, ten lawyers of different specializations answered the communities’ questions in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.

Samuel W. Lui from AABANY said that: “It shows that the community really needs help. They just need some simple and clear legal assistance and advice.”

Many people from the Asian community have concerns about Trump’s new immigration policy and came to consult lawyers.

Samuel W. Lui from AABANY said: “A lot of times clients just need to have a better idea about their rights and benefits. They have many questions, especially under the current immigration policy. Such an event is very important for the community.”

In order to satisfy the needs of the community, CCCNY and AABANY will partner to hold a workshop to explain the new immigration policy and provide free legal consultation on April 17, from 6 pm to 9 pm at the Confucius Plaza in Chinatown. The Chinese Chamber of Commerce (CCC) will work with Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) to provide a series of free legal advice clinics for Chinese Americans. Consultation service will be conducted on the second Wednesday of each month. These clinics will cover various topics including family issues, housing, and immigration.

CCC and AABANY announced details of the clinics in a press conference held on January 9, 2017. Each clinic will be conducted on the second Wednesday of each month, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, in Suit C-202, Confucius Plaza, 33 Bowery. The first clinic was held on January 11, 2017.

There is no need to make an appointment. Participants need to arrive between 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and bring the relevant documents so that lawyers can handle the problem smoothly.

Keqiao Li, Chairman of CCC, stated CCC aims to serve Chinese Americans and is pleased to work with AABANY to help Chinese Americans with their legal problems. Jinshan Yu, Executive Director of CCC, said many Chinese Americans have legal problems and they do not know where to get help; these clinics would be great opportunities for those who need legal help.

Yang Chen, Executive Director of AABANY, sated AABANY has nearly a thousand of members and is pleased to work with CCC to offer the free legal clinics. Attorney Huoliang [Sam] Lui stated that four to six attorneys will be present for each clinic.

Qichao Huang, the lawyer who facilitated the cooperation between the two organizations, is also the Director of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, a Unit of CCC. He pointed out that legal assistance is in an urgent need for Chinese Americans to protect their legal rights and interests. He further expressed his gratitude to AABANY for providing volunteer attorneys and to CCC for providing a convenient location.
