NAPABA continues to monitor the current situation regarding coronavirus and recognizes the disruption it has had—and may continue to have—on members’ daily lives.
With that in mind, NAPABA has extending its deadline for the 2020 NAPABA Convention Call for Programs to April 20 at 5 p.m. ET to provide more time for submitting proposals.
NAPABA also understands that the current situation may impact submitters’ ability to secure speakers for program ideas as people’s schedules change. NAPABA wants to reassure everyone that the CLE Committee will take the current events into consideration upon reviewing the submissions and will not count the lack of “confirmed” speakers against any submission.
NAPABA still encourages submitters to include those who have expressed interest in speaking on a program as “confirmed” speakers, and understands that their availability may change.
The coronavirus has disrupted normal business practices for many of us. We at NAPABA recognize that our members have been pulled in many different directions to adjust to changes in work environments.
With that in mind, we’re extending our deadline for the 2020 NAPABA Convention Call for Programs to March 23 at 5 p.m. ET to give you more time to submit.

Since 2014, AABANY has sought to recognize one law firm each year for its extraordinary efforts to improve the diversity of our profession by presenting AABANY’s Law Firm Diversity Award. The 2020 AABANY Law Firm Diversity Award will be presented at the Annual Dinner on February 26, 2020.
Nominees should be a law firm that has achieved significant success in the areas of recruiting, retaining and promoting women and diverse attorneys while also demonstrating a commitment to raising awareness of, and influencing the legal community to address, the challenges faced by women and diverse attorneys in the legal industry. Criteria for selection include:
Demonstrated commitment to diversity at all levels of the firm;
An established pipeline of diverse talent;
A track record of retaining and promoting women and diverse attorneys;
External activities, such as active participation in minority bar associations like AABANY and diversity programs of mainstream bar associations like the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, New York City Bar Association, and New York County Lawyers Association;
Any other factors the selection committee deems valuable in promoting AABANY’s mission.
The AABANY Law Firm Diversity Award recipient will be chosen by a selection committee through a competitive and confidential process.

In-House Counsel Application and Participation NAPABA will offer participating IHC a registration reimbursement in the amount of $720. Only one IHC from each company may receive a registration reimbursement for conducting two one-on-one meetings and attending one touch point. Reimbursements will be disbursed after the Convention as concluded.
Participants must have outside counsel hiring authority and will be invited to participate in the program only if they are selected by law firm participants for one-on-one meetings.
The deadline to submit an application for the NAPABA Prospective Partners Program (PPP) is two weeks from today! PPP aims to increase the number of Asian Pacific American partners at major law firms through introduction, mentorship, and relationship building. Between 2010 and 2018, 72 percent of PPP participants have been promoted to partner or moved to senior in-house positions—84 percent of them within two years of participation! In anticipation of the program’s tenth year, the PPP is inviting candidate applications and nominations for participation in the PPP sessions taking place at the 2019 NAPABA Convention in Austin, TX from Nov. 7-10. The application will close on Aug. 15, 2019.

A Review of Professor Tanya Hernández’s Acclaimed Book:
Multiracials and Civil Rights: Mixed-Race Stories of Discrimination
On behalf of the St. John’s University School of Law’s Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development, along with the Ron Brown Center for Civil Rights, St. John’s enthusiastically invites you to be a part of their next symposium issue. They are proud to announce that their Journal will be working with Fordham Law Professor Tanya Hernández. Professor Hernández recently published her acclaimed book, Multiracial and Civil Rights: Mixed-Race Stories of Discrimination, and they want to continue the important scholarship, analysis, and dialogue that her book inspires.
The Journal is calling for any and all writers to provide a serious commentary to Professor Hernández’s inspirational book. Commentaries can be a short essay or a longer book review. Professor Hernández will review all commentary and provide a written collective response.
If you are interested, please provide a short abstract of your commentary. All entries would be reviewed by the Journal’s editorial board. The editorial board will promptly notify authors who are accepted for publication in the Journal.

Accepting Nominations for Officer Candidates and Applications for At-Large Board Members for NAPABA’s 2019-20 Bar Year
The NAPABA Board of Governors consists of nine Officers who are elected by the membership, ten Regional Governors who are chosen by the NAPABA Regions, and four At-Large Board Members who are appointed by the Board of Governors. Now through July 8 at 5 p.m. EDT, the NAPABA Nominating & Elections Committee will be accepting nominations for members who want to stand for election as Officers and applications from members who want to be considered for At-Large Board Member positions.
