AABANY Intellectual Property Committee Gathers for Year-End Dinner in Koreatown

AABANY’s Intellectual Property Committee celebrated the end of the fiscal year with a dinner in Koreatown.

The IP Committee enjoyed classic and unique Korean dishes for dinner at Soju Haus in Koreatown on March 27, for their year-end celebration dinner. 

Members networked and discussed their current positions, spanning private practice, in-house, law school, and clerkship.  Members also shared stories about their experience as Asian American lawyers.

Axe Throwing Sunday with the IP Committee

On Sunday, February 24, the IP Committee got together for a fun and relaxing evening of Axe Throwing at Kick Axe in Brooklyn.  We had a good mix of members in various stages of their careers and practicing various aspects of intellectual property law.  Thanks to everyone who attended!

A Primer on U.S. Bankruptcy and Intellectual Property Transactions

On January 29, 2019, the IP Committee, along with the Asia Practice Committee and Commercial Bankruptcy and Restructuring Committee presented the panel: A Primer on U.S. Bankruptcy and Intellectual Property Transactions. The panel discussed the basics of intellectual property transactions involving distressed companies in the United States.

IP Committee Start of 2019 Mixer

IP Committee members braved the rain on January 24 to meet up for sushi and drinks and celebrate the start of the new year. Members whose practices focus on different areas of intellectual property such as copyright, trademark, entertainment, and patent exchanged stories about their work. Ideas for future events were discussed, and we are looking forward to planning them over the next few months.

On March 16, AABANY co-sponsored Emerging Companies: From Domestic Establishment to International Expansion with Cardozo Law School and the Chinese Business Lawyers Association. The symposium delved into the unique challenges of intellectual property in international markets. China Daily USA highlighted the seminar in its March 18 issue. The 2013 NAPABA Northeast Regional/AABANY Fall Conference took place on Saturday, September 21, at the New York offices of Weil Gotshal & Manges. It started with breakfast and registration at 8:00 am. Panel session 1 began at 9:30 am, featuring CLE programs on “Office Politics 101 – How to Win the Popularity Contest at Work,” “Post-Hurricane Sandy: One Year Later and its Impact on the Northeast,” and “The Nexus of IP and Everything Else in the Universe.” The morning session of the Trial Advocacy Program (TAP) began with a lecture.

Panel session 2 followed at 11:00 am with CLE programs on “How to Get Disbarred: Avoiding Ethics Complaints and What to Do if you Can’t,” “Girlfriends: ‘Lean In’ – When, Where and How,” and “Bright Lights, Big Pharma.” TAP breakout sessions took place, allowing participants to engage in actual exercises based on the morning lecture.

At the same time, during the morning session, the In-House Counsel Forum, Judicial Forum, numerous pitch sessions and the AABANY Career Exchange were simultaneously going on. It was a busy morning.

On March 28, the Asian American/Asian Research Institute and the Asian-American Entrepreneurs Network presented “The Next Big Thing: Economic Empowerment Conference” at CUNY Graduate Center. AABANY contributed a speaker, Julia Cheng, to the Monetizing IP workshop. Julia is the Founding Principal of her own firm, CyberlawStudio, and a member of AABANY’s IP Committee. She is among those interviewed in this Sinovision piece about the conference.
