Register for the 2025 Judge Thomas Tang and Dr. Pearl Tang Moot Court (TTMC) Competition!

NAPABA Law Foundation (NLF) is excited to invite you to register for the 2025 Thomas Tang Moot Court Competition!   

The Judge Thomas Tang and Dr. Pearl Tang Moot Court Competition is an appellate advocacy competition sponsored annually by the NAPABA Law Foundation. The purpose of this Competition is to help law students develop advocacy skills and to foster legal talents of the future.

The Competition was founded in 1993 and is named in honor of the late Honorable Thomas Tang, a respected jurist who served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1977 until his passing in 1995. 

This prestigious moot court competition is an incredible opportunity for law students to develop their advocacy skills and engage in complex international legal issues. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor, coach, volunteer or judge, or just starting your journey in moot court, the 2025 TTMC promises to be an exciting and enriching experience.

  • National Competition at the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association Annual Conference: Denver, CO, on November 7-8, 2025.

Meet the 2024 SAIL Scholarship Recipient | Jennifer Shim

Jennifer Shim, a second-year law student at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, was selected as the 2024 SAIL Scholar. A first-generation Korean American from New York City, Jennifer was recognized for her exceptional leadership, academic achievement, and commitment to public service.

Through the SAIL Scholarship, Jennifer is receiving mentorship, leadership development, and $7,500 to support her legal education.

“Jennifer shows great promise as a leader who gives generously of her time and effort to the broader community. We could not be more delighted to help her as she completes her academic work and becomes part of the next generation of leaders in our profession,” said Ivan Fong, who, with his wife Sharon, endowed the NLF SAIL Scholarship Program.

2015 Summer NLF Public Interest Internship Awarded to Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County

The NAPABA Law Foundation (NLF) is pleased to announce the 2015 Summer NLF Public Interest Internship grant has been awarded to Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA).  The NLF Public Interest Intern will work to identify emerging issues in healthcare and workers’ rights in the San Gabriel Valley’s APA community. This project will be a subset of NLSLA’s currently ongoing Legal Needs Study to determine specific legal needs in its service areas. The NLF Public Interest Internship will provide $6,000 in total to NLSLA to fund the NLF Public Interest Internship.

Specifically, the NLF Public Interest Intern will: 

  • Provide direct legal assistance to APA individuals through the Health Consumer Center and Workers’ Rights Clinic
  • Conduct outreach with APA-serving organizations, businesses, and ethnic media outlets to increase visibility of the Health Consumer Center hotline and Workers’ Rights Clinic
  • Survey existing APA services in the San Gabriel Valley and the private bar relating to healthcare access and workers’ rights; in doing so, identify at least three partners in priority cities and interview these partners for referral potential
  • Develop a pitch for NLSLA’s projects to share with elected officials and stakeholders in the San Gabriel Valley with an interest in helping expand legal services
  • Research demographic data of San Gabriel Valley populations from U.S. Census and other population surveys
  • Create two consumer education pieces on a health and workers’ right issue

This project furthers the mission of the NAPABA Law Foundation by placing a law student in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley to educate and serve the APA community. By immersing the legal intern in direct legal services, impact advocacy projects, and interactions with community leaders, attorneys will mentor the intern in the nuts and bolts of community lawyering and foster the intern’s interest in pursuing public interest work.

We thank all of the applicants for their excellent proposals and we encourage organisations to apply for the NAPABA Law Foundation Community Law Fellowship – a two-year fully funded fellowship (applications due on December 31, 2014).

NAPABA Law Foundation’s 2014 NLF Public Interest Internship Program

SUMMER INTERNSHIP FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC INTEREST ORGANIZATIONS

The NAPABA Law Foundation is pleased to announce its 2014 NLF Public Interest Internship Program. The internship program will fund at least one legal intern at a public interest organization(s) that provides either direct legal services or impact litigation on behalf of the Asian Pacific American community. Qualified organizations may apply for more than one internship and grants of up to $6,000 per intern will be provided to the finalist organization(s).

MCGUIREWOODS/NAPABA LAW FOUNDATION SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The NAPABA Law Foundation (NLF) is accepting applications for the McGuireWoods/NLF Internship Program. The Program will support students interested in the legal profession and will help students develop a commitment to advocacy on behalf of the APA community. The Program seeks to achieve these goals by providing undergraduate and law school students with meaningful internship experiences at the Washington DC offices of NAPABA and NLF.

About the Program

Each law clerk and undergraduate intern shall be assigned projects that will further the missions of NAPABA and NLF, including:

  • Promoting justice, equity and opportunity for APAs;
  • Fostering professional development, legal scholarship, advocacy and community involvement; and
  • Developing and supporting programs to educate the legal profession and APAs about legal issues affecting those communities.
