NAPABA’s 2019 Survey of Asian Pacific American Attorney/Law Student Bar Association: Become Eligible for NAPABA’s Raffle and Win!

The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) is conducting a survey to assess Asian Pacific American attorney and law student engagement with bar associations and in particular affinity bar associations. The results of the survey will aid NAPABA in measuring our reach and effectiveness and assessing our priorities.

We need a few minutes of your time to complete a survey. Your feedback will help guide us as we strive to further NAPABA’s mission to:

  • Be the national voice for the Asian Pacific American legal profession;
  • Promote justice, equity, and opportunity for Asian Pacific Americans; and
  • Foster professional development, legal scholarship, advocacy, and community involvement.

The survey should take approximately 10-18 minutes to complete. Responses to the survey will be kept strictly confidential. The last day to complete this survey is May 13, 2019.

Constance Baker Motley National Student Writing Competition

The Constance Baker Motley Writing Competition honors the legacy of Constance Baker Motley, a civil rights leader, elected official, and the first African-American woman appointed to the federal bench. Papers will be judged on their effective use, analysis and/or expansion of legal scholarship. The judging committee includes federal judges and leading academics.

The student authors of the top three papers will receive special recognition at the ACS National Convention in the summer of 2019 and a cash prize for their work. The winner will be awarded $3,000 and each of the two runners-up will receive $1,000. The top paper may also receive an offer of publication in the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law.

2019 Judges: Hon. Ketanji Brown Jackson, Hon. Jacqueline Nguyen, Hon. Carlton W. Reeves, Victoria Rodriguez Roldan, Kermit Roosevelt, Brian Soucek, and Ciara Torres-Spelliscy

Don H. Liu Scholars Program 2019

Don H. Liu Scholars Program 2019

Applications may now be submitted for the 2019 Don H. Liu Scholars Program. The Program was founded in 2014 by two past presidents of the Asian American Bar Association of New York.  The Program seeks to identify and cultivate future Asian American leaders in the legal community to address the single most important reality facing Asian American professionals today – the barrier to advancement.

This year, the Selection Committee will select up to 3 scholars.  Each scholar will be awarded $15,000 and have access to prominent mentors, including Don H. Liu, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of Target Corporation.   Additionally, scholars will have assistance in securing summer internships. To be eligible for the Program, the applicant must be of Asian descent and be enrolled full-time as a 1L (and be expected to graduate in 2021) in a law school in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania or the District of Columbia.  Application materials are due on November 23, 2018. AABANY Group Membership for Law Students

AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee is excited to launch a group membership rate for law students at local Asian Pacific American Law Student Associations (APALSAs). For a group rate of $150, AABANY will offer up to 20 APALSA members free one-year memberships. This group rate covers all AABANY events, including  CLE and non-CLE programs, networking events, AABANY’s Mentorship Program and AABANY’s Annual Fall Conference.

Please note that the current group rate covers up to 20 law students per law school. If the APALSA will have more than 20 participants, please reach out to Student Outreach Committee Co-Chair Edwin Kim ([email protected]) to discuss pricing options for groups larger than 20.

This group rate represents a huge discount given that the regular rate for law students is $15 per person. For APALSA members who are already dues-paying members, participation in this group rate will extend current memberships by another year. If you are a member of an APALSA at a New York area law school and interested in participating, please have one representative from your APALSA reach out to Edwin Kim ([email protected]) for further instructions.

This law student group rate offer will remain in effect until Monday, Dec. 3.

Volunteer for Thomas Tang Northeast Regional Moot Court Competition

The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association Law Foundation presents its 2018 Thomas Tang Northeast Regional Moot Court Competition, and is in need of volunteers. This competition provides a unique and memorable experience for student appellate advocates. The event allows law students to showcase their writing and oral advocacy skills, and also to compete for scholarships totaling $10,000. In summary, this year’s problem is on whether a state university has the right to impose disciplinary sanctions on a student for non-curricular expressive conduct, and if it may expel a law student for off-campus expressive activity. The event will be held on Friday, October 19, 2018, from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. at the United States Court of International Trade, One Federal Plaza, New York, New York. NAPABA seeks volunteers for grading briefs and for day-of. Brief graders will review and score briefs submitted by the student teams before the competition, and the time commitment is flexible. Day-of volunteers are welcome to assist for either part of the event or the entire day, and will serve as bailiffs or judges for the oral argument rounds. NAPIPA & C.C. Yin Scholarships for Justice

The National Asian Pacific Islander Prosecutors Association (NAPIPA) is proud to announce
that the NAPIPA & C.C. Yin Scholarships for Justice will be awarded once again this year. The
Scholarship is named in honor of distinguished Asian / Pacific Islander (API) community leader
and entrepreneur C.C. Yin. It is intended to encourage law students who share NAPIPA’s
mission and goals into pursuing careers in prosecution and continuing to help the API
community. 

This year, NAPIPA will award a Kaplan Bar Review course and a cash scholarship ranging from
$500 to $1000 to each of three (3) law students. 

In order to be eligible for these scholarships, the applicant must: 

1) Be an enrolled law student as of September 1, 2017 and for the 2018 school year; 

2) Be a member of NAPIPA (applications may be submitted contemporaneously with
scholarship applications and can be found online at www.napipa.org); 

3) Be personally present at the Scholarship Banquet on September 21, 2018, at the Golden
Unicorn in New York, N.Y. 

4) If necessary, be available to be interviewed through video conferencing such as
FaceTime or Skype. 

5) Please note, students who are already enrolled in the Kaplan Bar Review course are not
eligible for the Kaplan course scholarship
