AABANY Hosts “Dumplings & Discussion” Chat with Christopher Y. Chan

On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, AABANY’s Dumpling & Discussion series hosted Christopher Y. Chan, General Counsel at JLL Technologies, for a night of candid conversation and dumplings. The discussion was held at Fish & Richardson’s office in Times Square and moderated by AABANY Board Director Jeffrey Mok.

Over the course of the evening, Chris shared with us his fascinating legal career that has spanned the U.S. and Southeast Asia. Risk-taking, stereotype-breaking, and finding happiness were some of the key topics of discussion as Chris recounted how his journey to his current position as Global General Counsel for JLL Technologies.  Chris also shared his thoughts on the future of the legal industry.  During the Q&A session, Chris addressed questions from an avid audience about the importance of building strong communities and relationships and aspiring for success on your own terms.

In a lively networking reception afterwards, attendees enjoyed drinks along with plates of dumplings, siu mai and Singaporean mei fun.

AABANY Dumplings & Discussions Featuring Liz Nie

On June 16, 2025, AABANY held another installment of its Dumplings & Discussion Series. The series presents notable leaders in the legal industry in a fireside chat, in a casual, intimate setting. We were honored to have Liz Nie as our featured guest of the night. Liz is the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Acorns, a financial technology company. Throughout the event, attendees enjoyed pork and chive dumplings, shu mai, shrimp rolls, and many other delicious Chinese dishes. AABANY Board Director Jeffrey Mok moderated the discussion.

Over the course of the evening, Liz enthusiastically discussed her journey in the legal profession. She described her personal experiences that led to her current role as General Counsel and her transition into the fintech industry, and offered valuable insights into the industry.

Liz’s discussion elicited many thought-proving questions from all the attendees, resulting in a lively Q&A.

Afterwards, everyone continued to enjoy food and drinks while forming new connections and cultivating old ones at the networking reception.

AABANY Dumplings & Discussion Series Features David S. Sohn

On October 15, AABANY held the 5th installment of its Dumpling & Discussion Series.  The series brings notable AAPI leaders in the legal industry, with a fireside chat in a casual, intimate setting.  

We were honored to have David S. Sohn as our featured guest.  David is Vice President and Assistant General Counsel at JPMorgan Chase & Co.  David is also a current co-chair of AABANY’s In-House Committee, and formerly an AABANY Director and Vice-President of Programs & Operations, among other leadership positions at AABANY. 

Jeffrey Mok, current co-Vice-President of Programs & Operations, hosted the discussion.  David shared candid thoughts about his career journey, including his path to law school and his transition between different industries.  David also shared his insights on leadership and offered tips for lawyers who are early in their careers.

Attendees enjoyed a wide selection of delicious dumplings and other Chinese food. 

A lively reception followed the discussion with David, and attendees made new connections with each other over food and drinks.

Invitation to Town Hall on Federal Contract Compliance Programs and Opportunities

On Wednesday, April 10, 2019, the U.S. Department of Labor – Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) is holding a town hall for the legal industry at the Hilton Millennium Downtown New York, 55 Church St., New York, NY from 9 am to 1 pm.

The focus of the OFCCP is to review its compliance assistance efforts and identify options for enhancing contractors’ understanding of their nondiscrimination and affirmative action requirements.

The OFCCP is holding the town hall to learn more about what is important to its stakeholders in the legal industry and to enhance the scope and the quality of OFCCP’s compliance materials.

The Network of Bar Leaders and its members (including AABANY) are invited to attend and provide feedback to help the OFCCP develop policy for stakeholders in the legal industry and related fields. OFCCP will be looking for innovative ideas on how to make its existing compliance assistance efforts more practical and collaborative.

The meetings are open to the public but will be of particular interest to human resource managers, equal employment opportunity specialists, chief compliance officers, and other personnel in the legal industry who are directly involved with ensuring their company’s compliance with OFCCP’s requirements. Workers, job seekers, community groups and anyone interested in OFCCP and our work are also encouraged to attend. Please note only two tickets are available per organization on a first come, first served basis.
