NAPABA In-House Counsel Mentoring Program – Why Join?

The NAPABA In-House Counsel Mentoring Program has operated for nearly two decades and is responsible for hundreds of professional relationships that have resulted in the development of in-house counsel leaders who have shined in their career.

This program provides mentee attorneys the opportunity to expand their professional network and find meaningful support and connection with other diverse attorneys who understand the challenges of the practice and can foster new ideas that inspires career growth. Mentors will harness their leadership skills and expertise to pass along perspective, wisdom, and practical skills gained throughout their career.

Registrations Now Open for the Brooklyn Legal Pipeline Initiative

The Brooklyn Legal Pipeline Initiative (BLPI) was started in 2017 and is designed to provide students from diverse backgrounds, who live or attend college in Brooklyn, direct instruction on how to successfully apply to and fund a law school education. Participants  attend a  mock networking event and mock interviews. They are additionally offered mentorship opportunities.

Students who attend all sessions will be offered an opportunity to obtain a summer internship. Stipends may be available to defray certain transportation and ancillary costs associated with the internships. This program is co-sponsored by the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association (BWBA), The Defense Association of New York (DANY) and the Brooklyn Bar Association (BBA).

Selected students will attend five (5) two-hour classroom sessions, starting in January 2019 that will be moderated by volunteer judges, attorneys and law school administrators. Classes will be held at the Brooklyn Bar Association’s landmark building located at 123 Remsen Street in downtown Brooklyn. These classes will be held from 5:30- 7:30 PM on dates to be announced and will address the following topics:

January 15, 2019 – The Legal Profession – What is a lawyer? What do they do? – Panel discussion with judges and attorneys describing the areas in which they practice.

February 19, 2019 – Applying to Law School – Course selection- Time  management – Writing skills – IRAC – The LSAT’s – Paying for law school – Guided questions and answer session with a career counselor and a law school admissions officer.

March 19, 2019- Networking and Mentoring – Each participant will be paired with an Attorney Mentor – Developing a resume and cover letter.

April 16, 2019 – Internships –Interview Skills – Professionalism.

May 21, 2019 – Mock Interviews – Each participant will participate in simulated interviews and will receive immediate constructive feedback.

July -August 2019 – Summer Internship Program

The 2017 and 2018  Brooklyn Pipeline Programs were  resounding successes. We have now  had over 40 students complete our direct instruction  program  and have  been able to place each of the students who requested internship opportunities in stipend supported summer positions. The feedback from our summer internship providers was highly positive.

We are presently working with an LSAT prep course to offer this year’s students a greatly discounted rate  to prepare for the  July 2019 LSAT test.

We are now taking applications from senior associates for the 2013 Prospective Partners Program (PPP). We are also looking for In-House Counsel to participate in the program.

Senior associates interested in applying for the program must submit an application by October 21, 2013. Please click here for the application requirements and instructions.

The objective of the PPP is to identify, either through nomination or application, 6-8 senior associates or of counsel at major law firms who are “on-deck,” i.e. within 12-18 months of consideration for partnership, and to introduce them to and allow them to individually pitch a similar (or greater) number of senior In-House Counsel (GCs or others with outside counsel hiring authority). The participants would not necessarily be pitching for specific work or projects but for the opportunity to get to know and show potential clients what they can do. There will also be a mentorship aspect where senior associates will be paired with partner mentors.

Educational Programs

Reading to Children (10 Needed Now!) – Read to 1st & 2nd graders to grow their love of reading and improve their English skills.  Meets on Saturdays in Lower Manhattan from 10:30am – 12:30pm

Tutors for Math & English (20 Needed Now!) – Help 4th graders get into middle school by tutoring them for their statewide English and Math exams.  Meets on Saturdays in Lower Manhattan from 10am – 12pm.  

SAT Prep Teachers (10 Needed) – Help students get into college with a higher SAT score!  Meets 1.5 hours on Saturdays in Lower Manhattan from 10am – 11:30am or 11:30am – 1pm. 

Arts, Theater & Basketball

Art Mentors (10 Needed) – Mentor children who have been affected by domestic violence through digital art therapy.  Meets on Saturdays from 10am-3pm from Oct. – Jun.   Mandarin language volunteers needed.

Theater Instructors (20 Needed Now!) – Direct 3rd – 5th graders who speak English as a second language to perform in a theater production and improve their English skills.  Meets on Saturdays in Elmhurst Queens from 12-3pm or in Lower Manhattan from 10-12pm.  

Basketball Coaches (10 Needed) – Coach elementary school students and teach them the game of basketball.  Meets on Saturdays in Lower Manhattan from 10:30am – 1:30pm or 12pm – 2pm.

Mentoring

One-on-One Mentors (20 Needed) – Mentor a 13-18 year old student to provide guidance and introduce him or her to new experiences.  Meet with mentees twice a month.

Mentors Needed for Legal Outreach

Thanks to Board member Will Ng for sharing this call for mentors from Legal Outreach. Please read and respond to the call if you are available to help out.

At Legal Outreach, we focus on helping underserved students matriculate to top colleges and universities. We have been very successful in our efforts, as every one of our students graduates from high school, 85% complete college within four years, and 14% go on to become lawyers themselves.

We achieve these results through comprehensive programming that includes internships for the students at law firms and public interest organizations, SAT prep, after-school tutoring, and academic counseling. We also run a Constitutional Law Debate Program where students read fact patterns, analyze case-law, prepare briefs, and perfect oral arguments for constitutional law debates.  

All students in our program are assigned an Attorney  Mentor. These mentors are lawyers from major legal services firms, non-profit organizations, and government agencies throughout New York City. We are currently recruiting 50 attorneys to be mentors to our rising-sophomores. Attorney Mentors play an integral role in the success of our program and, based on surveys, students have credited much of their academic, personal, and professional accomplishments to the guidance and support they have received from their mentors.  

Mentoring is a low-commitment, high reward volunteer activity. Although we do ask that our mentors commit to mentoring a student from their sophomore through senior years of high school, mentoring is only a 4 hour per month commitment. Mentors help students with their constitutional law debate preparation and provide academic and personal counseling to our students. Mentors also receive 3 CLE credits each reporting cycle for participating in our Attorney Mentoring Program.
