Established in 2004 through a generous gift from Paul W. Lee of Goodwin Procter LLP, the NAPABA Law Foundation Partners and In-House Counsel Community Law Fellowship works to address the need for attorneys working on behalf of the Asian Pacific American populations. Recognizing that many obstacles prevent committed attorneys from practicing public interest law, including the shortage of entry-level jobs, the Fellowship provides an opportunity for a new attorney to gain substantive experience at a nonprofit national or community-based organization during the two-year Fellowship period. Fellows are funded at $100,000 for the two-year Fellowship.

Through a generous gift from Les R. Jin, NLF has established a $6,000 fellowship for one law student or recent law school graduate to gain meaningful legal experience at a public interest host organization on a project designed to advance opportunities for Asian Pacific Americans who are part of one or more under-served Asian Pacific American communities. The Fellowship is open to all currently enrolled U.S. law students in good standing to work at any qualified not-for-profit host organization in the U.S. If the Fellowship recipient is someone who is currently a first or second year law student, s/he shall perform the fellowship during the following summer. If the awardee is a third-year student, s/he shall finish the fellowship within seven months of his/her graduation.

In partnership with the Fred T. Korematsu Institute, NLF will be accepting applications for the Fred T. Korematsu Summer Fellowship Program. The program will provide $6,000 for a meaningful summer internship at a public interest organization. The intern will work to further Fred T. Korematsu’s legacy as a civil rights pioneer. Initial funding was provided by Parkin Lee and The Rockefeller Group.

The Thomas Tang Competition, held by the NAPABA Law Foundation, is open to all law students but is especially designed to reach out to APA law students and provide them with an opportunity to showcase their writing and oral advocacy skills and compete for scholarships totaling $10,000.

The Thomas Tang National Moot Court Competition was founded in 1993 by the APA Law Student Association of the South Texas College of Law, Houston, Texas. It is administered by the NAPABA Law Foundation and the NAPABA Judicial Council. The Competition honors the late Judge Thomas Tang, a champion of individual rights, an advocate for the advancement of minority attorneys, an ardent supporter of NAPABA and the moot court competition. Judge Tang served on the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals from 1977 until his passing in 1995. Judge Tang’s wife, Dr. Pearl Tang, continues the legacy and participates every year.

Bryan Cave/NLF Community Service Scholarship for Summer Law Interns
Diversity is a core value of Bryan Cave LLP and an engrained part of our culture. Bryan Cave LLP has partnered with NLF to offer the Bryan Cave / NLF Community Service Scholarship, which will provide a $2,500 scholarship award for one law student who is a summer law intern that works on issues on behalf of, or that benefits, the Asian Pacific American community.
To be eligible, an applicant must be enrolled as a full time or part time student in an Association of American Law School (AALS)-accredited law school and must have secured a summer law internship. The internship must be: (a) with a public service, civic, or non-profit organization or a corporation that is not a law firm; (b) arranged by the student; and © last for at least eight weeks.

2016 NAPABA Law Foundation Summer Public Interest Internship Grant
Deadline: January 15, 2016
Goal: The NLF Public Interest Internship is to provide support for one law student to gain meaningful legal experience during a 2016 summer internship at a public interest organization that provides direct legal services, impact litigation, and/or legal advocacy on behalf of the Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) community.
Overview:
- Public interest organizations are to provide NLF with a legal intern summer project proposal.
- NLF will select a host organization from these submissions. Host organization awardee is permitted and encouraged to advertise the internship opportunity in its recruitment.
- In April, the selected host organization will provide a list of summer legal interns (hired or tentative) for consideration of the award, along with their resumes and any additional supplemental materials for consideration.
- NLF will conduct telephonic interviews with the submitted summer legal intern(s). NLF, at its option, may select to narrow the pool of eligible summer legal interns to interview. NLF will select the award recipient and will use the interviews, resume, supporting materials, and input from the host organization in its deliberations.
- Upon award, NLF will provide a grant of $6,000 to the host organization. 100% of this grant must be used for the legal intern’s salary. The host organization is responsible for any administrative fees, payroll processing fees, federal withholding, taxes, etc.
- The selected intern shall work at the host organization for a minimum of 40 hours a week for 10 weeks during the summer of 2016.
