The National Conference of Vietnamese American Attorneys (NCVAA) is pleased to announce that the 10th Annual Conference will be held on October 14-15, 2016 in San Jose, California. The 2016 conference will take place in conjunction with the Vietnamese American Bar Association of Northern California’s (VABANC) 18th Annual Scholarship Dinner onFriday, October 14, 2016. VABANC is honored to co-host the combined event this year as NCVAA returns to San Jose, where VABANC co-hosted the very first conference in 2006. This year’s conference, based on the theme “Innovate”, provides an opportunity for attendees to network with attorneys, members of the judiciary, prominent legal scholars, jurists, and law students from all over the nation. Attorneys can receive valuable continuing legal education (CLE) credits on a number of stimulating current topics taught by scholars and practitioners.

Early Bird Registration Deadline: August 31, 2016

Register today to take advantage of early bird prices.  Thanks to our generous sponsors, the deadline for early bird registration has been extended to August 31, 2016.  

Early bird conference registration fee is $275 for general admission, $225 for non-profit/government/small firm, and $120 for students. Conference package ticket includes Fridaynight banquet, Saturday conference and educational programs, and Saturday night reception. After August 31, the prices will increase to $340 for general admission and $290 for non-profit/government/small firm. There is a separate price for only the Friday dinner banquet if you are unable to attend theSaturday conference.

NCVAA is in the process of applying for approval of at least five hours of California MCLE credits and for MCLE approval in additional states.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AND CLE PANEL PROGRAM INFORMATION

PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING WRITER VIET THANH NGUYEN will be a Keynote Speaker during NCVAA’s conference on Saturday, October 15, 2016.  Viet Thanh Nguyen is an associate professor of English and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. He is the author of Race and Resistance: Literature and Politics in Asian America (Oxford University Press, 2002) and the novel The Sympathizer from Grove/Atlantic (2015). PROFESSOR JOSEPH THAI will keynote VABANC’s 18th Annual Scholarship Dinner on Friday, October 14, 2016. Professor Thai is the Watson Centennial Chair and Presidential Professor at the University of Oklahoma College of Law, where he teaches and writes about constitutional law and the Supreme Court. Professor Thai’s family immigrated from Vietnam to America when he was two.  He grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he attended Union Public Schools.  He later attended Harvard College, where he studied English literature, and Harvard Law School. Following law school, Professor Thai clerked for Judge David Ebel of the Tenth Circuit, and Justices John Paul Stevens and Byron White of the Supreme Court. Professor Thai has practiced in both the public and private sectors.   He frequently engages in pro bono litigation in the areas of civil rights, criminal law, and constitutional law.  He served on the legal team that successfully challenged Oklahoma’s “Anti-Sharia” law, and before the Supreme Court decided the issue nationally, he served as co-counsel in the successful challenge to Oklahoma’s same-sex marriage bans. Professor Thai has frequently been named outstanding professor by students at OU.  His three children have also occasionally named him “best dad.”  In 2015, the National Conference of Vietnamese American Attorneys honored Professor Thai with the Trailblazer Award. Dr. Tung Thanh Nguyen, Chair of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, will be a Keynote Speaker during NCVAA’s conference on Saturday, October 15, 2016. Dr. Nguyen is Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where he provides medical care to a diverse patient population and teaches clinicians.  He also serves as Director of the Asian American Research Center on Health, Director of the Vietnamese Community Health Promotion Project,  ad a Co-Principal Investigator of the Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research and Training. In these roles, he has conducted research in health care prevention for Asian Americans, including studies to increase breast, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer screening among Asian Americans as well as on tobacco use among Asian Americans. Dr. Nguyen holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Harvard University and an M.D. from the Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. Nguyen was appointed to the President’s Advisory Commission on AAPIs in 2011. 

Our CLE panel programs will present experienced and distinguished attorneys and scholars covering various topics including:

  • (i) the EB-5 investment visa and the very different new wave of immigrants from Vietnam, 
  • (ii) landmark recent developments in patent and intellectual property law, 
  • (iii) the much-discussed Trans-Pacific Partnership and its potential impact for the United States and Vietnam, 
  • (iv) proactive strategies to minimize e-discovery risks and expenses in light of considerable changes in the law and technology, and 
  • (v) share/gig/on-demand economy and whether existing laws are keeping up with a society being changed by innovation.

VABANC STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP Deadline: August 1, 2016 

VABANC is now accepting applications for its 2016 Scholarship Awards. The scholarship deadline has been extended to August 1, 2016. 

Open to all currently enrolled law students, the scholarships are intended to provide assistance to students toward their public interest or social justice goals.  

The 2016 scholarship recipients will be recognized during VABANC’s 18th Annual Scholarship Dinner on Friday, October 14, 2016. Attendance at the scholarship dinner is mandatory (i.e., the award is contingent on attendance). Click here for the scholarship application. 


NCVAA | JUNG FOUNDATION PUBLIC INTEREST SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: September 12, 2016

NCVAA and the Charles & Melita Jung Foundation (Jung Foundation) are sponsoring a public interest scholarship to the NCVAA 10th Annual Conference. The scholarship is intended to encourage and make it easier for public interest attorneys to participate in NCVAA.

The award consists of the following: (1) Flight: the recipient will receive a domestic round trip ticket to San Jose, CA on Southwest Airlines, or reimbursement for a domestic round trip ticket up to $450; (2) Registration Fee: the conference registration fee will be waived by NCVAA; and (3) Hotel Stay: reimbursement for a 2-night stay at the Fairmont San Jose Hotel, up to $346.

Reimbursements will be net of any other scholarships received. All U.S.-based public interest attorneys are invited to apply. The application deadline is Monday, September 12, 2016 (but the applicants will be considered on a rolling basis beginning 8/19/16, so the earlier the better).
