From the Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Affairs: Neighborhood Leadership Institute

Dear Friends and Colleagues, 

I hope all is well. The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs is delighted to announce the second annual Neighborhood Leadership Institute (NLI), a leadership training program for emerging immigrant leaders.  In partnership with Citizens Committee for New York City, the Neighborhood Leadership Institute is a signature program of One NYC One Nation, a mayoral initiative increasing civic engagement within immigrant communities.

The Neighborhood Leadership Institutes will bring residents together on quality of life issues, build a network of community partners, provide a better understanding of government, and increase resilience through emergency preparedness training. This training will be led by the Office of Emergency Management and will serve as a pipeline for multilingual New York City residents to join Community Emergency Response (CERT) teams in their communities. Starting in April, we will conduct a series of NLI workshops in each of the five boroughs. 

The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs is NOW accepting applications for the NLIs in each borough. The ideal Neighborhood Leadership Institute candidate is an emerging immigrant leader who wants to develop a better understanding of local government and a range of communication, problem solving and community building skills. Candidates must possess a strong motivation to participate in local civic engagement opportunities. Candidates must be interested in the well-being of their neighborhood and working within their community to make a difference. Upon completion of the Neighborhood Leadership Institute, groups will be connected to leadership and funding opportunities, and will receive a certificate of completion from the Mayor’s Office. Candidates must be proficient in English and be willing to commit to at least five 3-hour workshops to receive a certificate.

Communicate for Impact: Using “People Styles” to Hone Your Communication Skills is the first of a five-part series in 2012 focused on skills development, presented by NYC Bar Associations’ Subcommittee for Women of Color.  The workshop will take place on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 6:30 pm-8:30 pm at the House of the Association, 42 West 44th St. (bet. 5th & 6th Ave.)

On Saturday, November 12, St John’s APALSA together with AABANY’s Student Outreach Committee presented Networking 101, an interactive networking workshop designed to teach law students the ins and outs and do’s and don’ts of networking by getting students on their feet and engaging in networking exercises. Chris Chan, past AABANY president, led the workshop, attended by students from St. John’s, CUNY, Hofstra and Touro.  Student Outreach Committee Co-Chairs Ben Chan and Liza Sohn attended, along with AABANY members Stephen Kim and Lucian Chen and Executive Director Yang Chen. Thanks to Student Outreach Committee Co-Chair Liza Sohn we have photos from the Chris Chan Exam Writing Workshop that took place on Friday, Nov. 4, at New York Law School.  Approximately 50 law students from Brooklyn, Cardozo, New York Law School, NYU and Touro, attended.  Also present from AABANY were Ben Chan, co-chair of the Student Outreach Committee, Richard Tsai, co-chair of the Government and Public Sector Committee, Francis Chin, AABANY Director, and Sam Yee.  Richard, who is also court attorney to the Hon. Michael Stallman, provided some great tips and pointers to round out Chris Chan’s presentation.

On Friday evening, October 21, Hofstra Law School APALSA hosted the first Chris Chan exam writing workshop of the season. Law students from Hofstra, St. John’s and Touro were in attendance. They experienced the Chris Chan method of breaking down and analyzing law school exams to help demystify the process of taking law school exams and excelling at them. The next one will be the Upstate Roadshow taking place at Syracuse Law School.  Thanks to Liza Sohn, Student Outreach Committee Co-Chair, for the great shots.
