On December 11, 2016, AABANY’s Immigration & Nationality Law Committee co-sponsored the United East Athletic Association’s Immigration Know Your Rights Forum for the Chinatown community, which was led by UEAA’s Young Women’s Leadership Program and was also co-sponsored by KALAGNY and Justice For Our Neighbors. AABANY member Yan Sin moderated the discussion on behalf of the UEAA. TJ Mills of JFON and Diana Shum of the Legal Aid Society spoke about immigration benefits–particularly DACA–and how they might change once President-Elect Trump takes office. Eve Guillergan reviewed Trump’s stated immigration policies and discussed the possible revival of the Muslim registry NSEERS. Amanda Bernardo advised the community on what to do and know in the event of an immigration raid, and other issues affecting immigrants with criminal convictions. All the speakers encouraged the audience to consult with immigration law practitioners and remain vigilant as we enter into the new presidential term.

AABANY was privileged to have the opportunity to co-sponsor the event and to be of service to our immigrant communities. To learn more about how you can get involved, please get in touch with our Immigration and Nationality Law Committee and reach out to one of the co-chairs, Amanda Bernardo, Poonam Gupta or Susan Akina.
