The real-life Chinese Yankee Thomas Sylvanus (Ah Yee Way) was enslaved, fought for his freedom in the Civil War and continued to battle for his rights until his death in 1891. Little wonder The New York Times called him “singular.” Forgotten for more than a century, his story has been reclaimed by Ruthanne Lum McCunn in a book that West Point attendee Gus Lee praises as “history that speaks to the heart with the aches of struggle, the challenges of identity, and the search for love against all odds.”
