[미주한국일보] AABANY, 김준현 뉴욕남부 지검 부검사장에 공로상

On June 30, AABANY’s Prosecutors Committee held their 7th Annual Reception at Brooklyn Law School, honoring Deputy U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon H. Kim and the family of fallen hero Detective Wenjian Liu. Read our highlight here.

The Asian American Bar Association of New York’s Prosecutors Committee held their 7th Annual Reception on June 30 at Brooklyn Law School. On the same day that he was promoted, Deputy U.S. Attorney Korean prosecutor Kim Joon Hyun (far left in the photo) received a Distinguished Service Award. The family of deceased officer Detective Wenjian Liu of the New York Police Department (NYPD), who was last year fatally shot, also received an honor for their sacrifice.

亞裔律師協會追憶警員劉文健 – 世界新聞網

On June 30 at Brooklyn Law School, the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) gathered for the 7th Annual Prosecutors Reception with different affinity bar members (KALAGNY, SABANY, etc.) and state and federal prosecutors. During the Prosecutors Reception, they honored the fallen police officer Wenjian Liu. The fallen police officer’s father shared stories of his son, which touched all of the audience members and brought them to tears. ADA Kin Ng translated the fallen police officer’s father’s stories of how Wenjian Liu loved helping people and making a change.

Kin Ng also told his story of the first time he met Det. Liu’s parents, which brought back his memories of his own parents:

Right when I entered his house, “[Det. Liu’s] father said to me, “Are you hungry?” I responded, “I am not hungry.” As with many other Asian parents, they insisted that I should have something to eat.

During the ceremony, Wenjian Liu’s father, mother, and widow received a standing ovation along with a salute.

Prosecutors from the five boroughs of New York were represented at the event. Preet Bharara, famously known for prosecuting Sheldon Silver, since he took his position, has attended every event each year. He also gave remarks. He hopes to increase the presence of Asian Americans in law enforcement and hopes that Asian Americans can bring justice everywhere as well.

Deputy U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon Kim was presented with an award. During his speech, he pointed out that the role of prosecutors is difficult, but that whatever we do, we have to do it the right way and the proper way. His proudest achievement is to be able to tell his 4-year-old son that he brings people to justice, just like Batman.

Cadwalader Partner, Federal Judge Broaden Scope of Re-Enactments

“Some 150 lawyers came to watch a re-enactment produced by Cadwalader litigation partner Kathy Chin and her husband, Judge Denny Chin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. For nearly a decade the pair have been re-enacting important cases in Asian-American legal history for live audiences with help from members of the Asian American Bar Association of New York.”

Nell Gluckman, of The American Lawyer, recently spotlighted Hon. Denny Chin and Kathy Hirata Chin’s work in leading historical trial reenactments in, “Cadwalader Partner, Federal Judge Broaden Scope of Reenactments.”

An important educational tool for attorneys, the trial reenactments have highlighted the history of Asian Americans in the law. The Chins are now planning to broaden the scope of topics covered. Whatever case they choose next, we trust their talent and judgment and look forward to the thought-provoking questions and conversations that they will inevitably bring up.

On June 24, AABANY held its 8th Annual Winetasting & Networking Reception for Law Firm Partners and Senior In-House Counsel. Thanks to Sonia Low, Board Director and General Counsel of the ONE Group Hospitality, we were able to hold the Winetasting at STK Downtown, formerly known as Tenjune. There were approximately 125 people present at this invite-only event, held by the Corporate Law Committee and the In-House Counsel Committee. DHS Announces Temporary Protected Status Designation for Nepal

From U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services:

Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson announced his decision to designate Nepal for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months based on the conditions resulting from the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25, 2015, and the subsequent aftershocks. As a result, eligible nationals of Nepal residing in the United States may apply for TPS with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The Federal Register notice published today provides details and procedures for applying for TPS.

The TPS designation for Nepal is effective today, June 24, 2015, and will be in effect through December 24, 2016. The designation means that, during the designated period, eligible nationals of Nepal (and people without nationality who last habitually resided in Nepal) will not be removed from the United States and may receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). The 180-day TPS registration period begins June 24, 2015 and runs through December 21, 2015.

To be eligible for TPS, applicants must demonstrate that they satisfy all eligibility criteria, including that they have been both “continuously physically present” and “continuously residing” in the United States since June 24, 2015. Applicants also undergo thorough security checks. Individuals with certain criminal records or who pose a threat to national security are not eligible for TPS. The eligibility requirements are fully described in the Federal Register notices and on the TPS Web page atwww.uscis.gov/tps.

Applicants may request that USCIS waive any or all TPS-related fees based on inability to pay by filing Form I-912, Request for Fee Waiver, or by submitting a written request. Fee-waiver requests must be accompanied by supporting documentation. USCIS will reject any TPS application that does not include the required filing fee or a properly documented fee-waiver request. All USCIS forms are free. Applicants can download these forms from the USCIS website at www.uscis.gov/forms or request them by calling USCIS toll-free at 1-800-870-3676.

Applicants seeking information about the status of their individual cases can check My Case Status Online or call the USCIS National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283 (TTY 1-800-767-1833) at no cost.
