Litigation Committee Gathers for Happy Hour on May 9

stag's head

The Litigation Committee celebrated its first Happy Hour for 2013 at The Stag’s Head on May 9 in midtown on the East Side.  After the rain cleared, a group of loyal and enthusiastic members, both old and new, straggled in and enjoyed an evening of friendly banter.  It was a good way to spend a beautiful spring evening in Midtown.

A New Film & Theater Performance By Undocumented Asian Youth

May 20, 7:30-9 | The Culture Project, 45 Bleecker Street

#UndocuAsians brings the lived experiences of people most intimately affected by immigration laws to The Culture Project’s stage. This rare theater performance features undocumented Asian American youth sharing their personal stories of growing up in the United States in a culture of silence.

The performance opens with a short film following the lives of three undocumented Asian American youth and features an onstage performance by more than a dozen other undocumented youth (members of AALDEF’s undocumented youth group RAISE) whose stories bring a different face to the immigration debate and highlight the diverse and difficult realities that undocumented Asian communities face beyond the conventional “DREAMer” narrative. Poet/activist Kelly Tsai will be a special presenter.

Purchase tickets: undocuasian.eventbrite.com
(student discount available)

#UndocuAsians is presented by RAISE (Revolutionizing Asian American Immigrant Stories on the East Coast). RAISE is a pan-Asian undocumented youth-led group on the East Coast supported by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF). RAISE aims to create safe spaces in our communities while advocating for humane immigration policies. Our visibility increases through political activism, leadership development, community education, and coalition building. Through youth organizing, we will reimagine and realize justice for immigrants in America.

CHIEF JUDGE LORETTA A. PRESKA AND CONGRESSMAN JOSÉ E. SERRANO ANNOUNCE FUNDING FOR NEW SECURITY PAVILION AT UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT

       image

Loretta A. Preska, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), and Congressman José E. Serrano (NY–15) announced today that the court received $10.44 million to build a security pavilion outside the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse, located at 500 Pearl Street in Lower Manhattan.
“We gather here today to celebrate a success of bipartisan government action to improve the security of our courthouse and of the people who come here every day to do business,” said Chief Judge Preska. “We have been pursuing the means to construct this pavilion since September 11, and today’s triumph is long overdue.”
The pavilion will enhance security at and speed entry to the busy federal courthouse, home of many high-profile proceedings. The project was conceived after 9/11, but funding for the pavilion was not found until recently.
Congressman Serrano, who was instrumental in appropriating funds for the project, said: “I was happy to be able to intercede on the Moynihan Courthouse’s behalf from my seat on the Appropriations Committee. We know that keeping our federal buildings secure is of the utmost importance, especially one with high sensitivity trials involving national security like Moynihan. Waiting years after 9/11 was unacceptable.” No new appropriation was made to fund the pavilion; funds were reprogrammed from completed or cancelled projects.
Other key representatives who helped secure funding for the project were also on hand for today’s announcement:
“This new security pavilion is an essential modernization of the Moynihan Courthouse that will ensure that Manhattan’s federal court is a safe space for all who use it,“ said Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-10). “For the wheels of justice to operate smoothly, it is vital that our courthouses be secure. This is especially true in my district in Lower Manhattan, where we are still very much living in the shadow of 9/11.”
Representative Peter King (NY–2), said: “As the leading terrorist target, New York’s security is essential. I am proud to have played a part in ensuring funds for the Moynihan Federal Courthouse’s new security pavilion. It is imperative that all those who work for justice can do so in a secure environment.”
The U.S. General Services Administration will oversee construction, which is slated to begin in October and completed in April 2015. The 4,500 square foot glass and steel structure will be situated on the west side of the courthouse.

VOLUNTEER and Join Us at the Annual Citywide Citizenship Application Assistance Event on May 11th!

Please Support AABANY and Volunteer with Us for the Saturday, May 11th, Citywide Citizenship Day 2013.

We invite you to participate in the largest naturalization application assistance event in New York State! Your skills and experience will be an enormous asset and we greatly value your commitment.

AABANY is co-sponsoring this event again. This year, we hope to have at least 10 experienced AABANY immigration law practitioners participate. But we also need the help of all attorneys and paralegals — whether you practice immigration law or not! We need any and all AABANY members to participate on Citizenship Day, in order to better serve and represent the APA immigrant community.

Needed:

Attorneys and paralegals with or without expertise in naturalization and citizenship law. We need your help to determine applicant’s eligibility for naturalization, assure that applicants leave the event with a properly completed application, and to assist and/or supervise volunteers providing application assistance.

When:

Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. But if you can only come for part of the day, that’s ok too. Volunteer whatever time you can — whether it’s a morning or an afternoon.

Where:

John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Haaren-Hall Building, 899 Tenth Avenue, Gymnasium, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10019.

How to Register: Click here to be taken to the registration form. Once there, you should chose “AABANY” as your affiliation so we can keep track of registration and attendance for you.

Why Volunteer?  Because you are helping the many immigrants in our city who hope for and deserve U.S. citizenship — but cannot afford private attorney legal fees to achieve their goal. Plus, I guarantee that you will have fun and enjoy a great deal of personal satisfaction by assisting others during this pro bono event. I know this because I see the happy faces of our volunteers each year! This is always a wonderful experience!
