AALDEF Position Announcement: Voting Rights Organizer

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) is a New York-based national organization that protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, advocacy and community education.  AALDEF has a 12-person staff and is supported by foundations, corporations, individual contributions, and special events. DESCRIPTION:

AALDEF’s Asian American Democracy Program seeks to promote fairness in the electoral process and invigorate the civic participation of Asian Americans, especially new citizens and persons not yet fluent in English.  By expanding access to the electoral process for Asian Americans, AALDEF improves the quality of democracy for all Americans.

The Voting Rights Organizer is a one-year position and may be extended, subject to available funding. The Organizer will be responsible for mobilizing Asian American community groups for a non-partisan exit poll of Asian American voters and overseeing volunteers for Election Day poll monitoring in several states for the 2016 Presidential Election.

The job includes recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers; working with community leaders; supervising the development, translation, and printing of materials; and giving educational presentations.  The Organizer will also oversee post-election follow-up and assist in writing a report about Asian American voter participation in the 2016 elections.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and able to supervise volunteers and work with a wide variety of community leaders and organizations.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Access and other database systems.
  • Bilingual ability in an Asian language is desirable.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience in community organizing is desirable.
  • Ability to travel and work on occasional weekends.

AALDEF Theatre Party – Allegiance, Oct. 29

Please join us on Thursday, Oct. 29 for a special benefit preview of George Takei’s new musical on Broadway, Allegiance.  George will join us for a Q&A after the performance, so you don’t want to miss this wonderful AALDEF event!

Allegiance is a multi-generational tale about family, freedom, love, and loss as Japanese Americans were incarcerated in camps during World War II.  It is inspired by the true-life experience of its star, George Takei, the recipient of AALDEF’s 1992 Justice in Action award and a beloved actor (Star Trek), social justice activist, and social media icon.  The musical also features Tony Award winner Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon, Les Miserables) and Telly Leung (Rent, Glee).  Allegiance had its premiere in 2012 at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego.  It will be the first time in thirteen years that an Asian-led cast has been on Broadway since the revival of Flower Drum Song.

Join us to catch a sneak peek of this new Broadway show before it opens on November 8.  We have a limited number of orchestra and front mezzanine seats at a specially discounted price of $125 per ticket (box office price $142).  Rear mezzanine and balcony tickets can also be purchased for $75 and $65.

AALDEF DACA/DAPA Training on Feb. 26, 2015

AALDEF seeks pro bono attorneys to represent eligible people who qualify under the expanded DACA and the new DAPA programs. Attorneys must attend an AALDEF training in order to take a case.

A significant number of Asian immigrants are among an estimated 300,000 additional undocumented individuals who may benefit from an expansion of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, for which applications will be accepted starting on February 18, 2015.  DACA offers temporary relief from the threat of deportation to young people and allows them to obtain employment authorization. Last November, the Obama administration announced the expansion of DACA and the creation of a new deferred action program known as DAPA for parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, which will begin in May 2015. For many, this will be the first opportunity to legally work and live in this country.

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) is seeking pro bono counsel to represent eligible people who qualify under these deferred action programs. No prior legal experience is required, but pro bono counsel will be required to attend a training prior to taking a case. These cases would help support the work of RAISE,  a pan-Asian undocumented youth-led group affiliated with AALDEF.

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) has announced the recipients of its 2015 Justice in Action Awards: 

  • Jessica Hagedorn, novelist, poet, and playwright; 
  • Neal Katyal, partner at Hogan Lovells, Paul Saunders Professor at Georgetown University, and former Acting Solicitor General of the United States; and 
  • John W. Kuo, Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary of Varian Medical Systems. 

They will receive the awards at AALDEF’s Annual Lunar New Year Gala on Monday, February 23, 2015 at PIER SIXTY, Chelsea Piers, in New York City.

Over 800 leaders of the civil rights, legal, business, and arts communities are expected to attend AALDEF’s 2015 Lunar New Year Gala. The evening begins with a 6 p.m. cocktail reception and silent auction, followed by the Justice in Action Awards ceremony and a banquet dinner.

Since 1974, AALDEF has been protecting and promoting the civil rights of Asian Americans across the nation through litigation, advocacy, organizing, and community education. All proceeds from the Lunar New Year Gala will go directly towards supporting AALDEF’s legal and educational programs in immigrant rights, economic justice for workers, voting rights and civic participation, educational equity, and the elimination of hate violence, police misconduct, and human trafficking.
