In the Wake of Zero Tolerance–Best Practices for Representing Separated Parents and Children Webinar
This Friday, July 13th, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, the ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice will be holding a webinar for attorneys who would like to learn more and help separated parents and children.
The ABA Commission on Immigration, ProBAR, CRSJ and Children’s Immigration Law Academy (CILA) present this webinar for attorneys who wish to learn more about representing families separated by the Administration’s “zero tolerance” policy. Our experts will discuss how separated families have been processed at the border, forcibly separated, prosecuted and detained, causing grave suffering to parents and children and obstacles to their legal claims. Our experts will discuss each step in the process and explain the complicated legal proceedings that apply to parents caught at the border and children who have been rendered “unaccompanied” by government action. Lawyers across the country have expressed interest in helping these families. Many of these families remain divided today despite the President’s Executive Order that allegedly ended the practice but failed to include a procedure for reuniting families unless they agree to waive all claims and accept removal. This is not due process. Join us to learn more about how to effectively represent these families and permit those who fear persecution to apply for asylum as required by law.

At the Trial of Two Pizzas, to be held during the ABA Annual Meeting in New York City starting on August 10, an old rivalry will be put to rest at last. Both New York thin crust pizza and Chicago deep dish pizza are well-loved, but only one can be the best. Presided by AABANY-member Hon. Doris Ling-Cohan, the Trial of Two Pizzas will take place at the New York Hilton Midtown on Thursday, August 10th.
The Trial of Two Pizzas is included in the CLE in the City Series, as part of the ABA Annual Meeting. Both ABA and non-ABA members can sign up for just $25 per program, and every program comes with access to the Trial of Two Pizzas on August 10th.
Beyond the Trial of Two Pizzas, CLE in the City participants can partake in programs from twelve ABA tracks on topics ranging from family law to the United Nations, from Thursday, August 10th to Friday, August 11th. American Bar Association Spirit of Excellence Award Nomination

Each year, the NAPABA Awards Committee reviews the pool of well-qualified NAPABA members and selects an individual to be nominated on behalf of NAPABA for the ABA Spirit of Excellence Award. Most recently, NAPABA nominated Hon. Jacqueline Nguyen and Peggy Nagae, both of whom were honored with this prestigious award in 2015 and 2017, respectively. The Awards Committee now seeks nominee recommendations for consideration of the 2018 award.
The Committee is looking for NAPABA members who have:
- achieved professional excellence in their fields;
- served as role models in overcoming hardships or barriers and achieved success and excellence in the legal profession;
- influenced racially and ethnically diverse individuals to pursue and/or to succeed in legal careers;
- opened doors, broken down barriers, or otherwise promoted the full and equal participation of racially and ethnically diverse individuals in the legal profession; and
- worked with or on behalf of racially and ethnically diverse lawyers from racial or ethnic groups other than their own.

Veterans Day: A Call for Lawyers to Serve

America’s lawyers join the rest of the nation on Veterans Day to honor those who have served to protect and preserve our democratic rule of law. We are indebted to those who have worn the military uniform, along with the family members and caregivers of veterans for all they endure to support those who defended our country.
The American Bar Association has long championed the legal rights of those who answered the call of duty, and this year we established the Veterans Legal Services Initiative through which we will expand on the outstanding work the ABA already does to help veterans. As part of this initiative, this year?s National Pro Bono Celebration has been extended to Veterans Day, with more events encouraged for May around Memorial Day. To honor Veterans Day, we call your attention to the following ABA programs and encourage you to volunteer on behalf of or otherwise support those who have protected the freedoms we cherish:
The ABA Commission on Homelessness and Poverty (www.ambar.org/homeless) conducts programs and advocates on behalf of homeless veterans, who comprise a significant segment of the homeless population. Volunteer lawyers can sign up for an ABA project in cooperation with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Veterans Affairs to help homeless veterans comply with child support obligations.
The Veterans Claims Assistance Network (www.abavcan.org) pilot project assisted the wounded and disabled veterans who must wait too long to receive the disability benefits they have earned. Working in close cooperation with the Veterans Administration, the ABA recruited volunteer lawyers to help veterans complete their claims packages for expedited review by the VA?at no cost to the veteran. Having now completed the pilot phase, ABA is now raising funds to relaunch the project as a nationwide initiative.
The ABA Military Pro Bono Project (www.militaryprobono.org) accepts case referrals for civilian pro bono lawyers from military lawyers on behalf of junior-enlisted personnel and their families. A related initiative, Operation Stand-By, enables military lawyers to seek case advice from volunteer civilian lawyers. Volunteer lawyers can sign up for either project on the Military Pro Bono Project website.
ABA Home Front (www.abahomefront.org) is a source of easy-to-understand information on a variety of legal topics military families face every day. The website also provides a directory of legal services. Lawyers seeking pro bono opportunities can sign up on the website.

Stephen Breyer, born in San Francisco in 1938, is a justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. He is a graduate of Stanford, Oxford, and Harvard Law School. He taught law for many years as a professor at Harvard Law School and at the Kennedy School of Government. He has also worked as a Supreme Court law clerk (for Justice Arthur Goldberg), a Justice Department lawyer (antitrust division), an Assistant Watergate Special Prosecutor, and Chief Counsel of the Senate Judiciary Committee (working closely with Senator Edward M. Kennedy to pass the Airline Deregulation Act).
In 1980 he was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit by President Carter, becoming Chief Judge in 1990. In 1994 he was appointed a Supreme Court Justice by President Clinton. He has written books and articles about administrative law, economic regulation, and constitutional law, including Regulation and Its Reform, Breaking the Vicious Circle: Toward Effective Risk Regulation, Active Liberty, Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge’s View and, The Court and the World which will be published soon.
His wife, Joanna, was born in Great Britain and is a retired clinical psychologist. They have three children (Chloe, Nell, and Michael) and five grandchildren.
Justice Breyer will be signing copies of his newly published book The Court and the World: American Law and the New Global Realities immediately following the luncheon.
