Asian American Law Fund of New York (AALFNY) Awards Public Interest Scholarships for Summer 2021

Amanda Jimenez (CUNY School of Law, Class of 2022) will be interning with Mission to End Modern Slavery, where she will be assisting migrant workers and trafficking victims;

Evelyn (Meng) Lin (Syracuse University College of Law, Class of 2022) will be interning with the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic at Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York; and

Shelley Wu (Cardozo School of Law, Class of 2023) will be interning with the Domestic Violence Project at the Urban Justice Center.

We will also honor the recipient of the AALFNY-SABANY Public Interest Fellowship: Dawa Lhamo (CUNY School of Law, Class of 2023), who will be interning with Catholic Migration Services.

The Asian American Law Fund of New York awards Public Interest Scholarships each year to law students with a demonstrated commitment to the Asian American community. The purpose of the award is to assist law students with their tuition while encouraging them to use their legal knowledge and training to benefit the Asian American community in New York and to foster commitment by law students to public service for the Asian American community in New York.  Since 1997, AALFNY has funded more than 60 public interest scholarships to law students.

The Asian American Law Fund of New York was established in 1993 by the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) to create and support non-profit and charitable efforts to eliminate prejudice and discrimination and to defend human and civil rights.

AALFNY call for applications for Board positions

The Asian American Law Fund of New York (“AALFNY”) is soliciting applications for positions on its Board of Directors.

AALFNY
is a non-profit organization established in 1993 by the Asian American
Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) to support non-profit, charitable
and education purposes, such as scholarships and internship programs in
the New York metropolitan area.  AALFNY has an independent Board but
remains affiliated with AABANY and continues to work in close
coordination with AABANY on fundraising and pro bono programs.  AALFNY’s
mission statement and information about its scholarships and past
projects can be found here.

To
apply, please submit a statement of interest and a current resume,
biography or CV listing your experience and accomplishments and any
honors received to date.  As part of the statement of interest, please
indicate your experience with AALFNY, AABANY, NAPABA, or other relevant
organization, whether you have been an active member of such
organization, and describe any activities that you have participated in
or helped to organize. If you have not been an active member in any such
organization, explain what capabilities, resources, talents, skills,
expertise, experience or any other contributions you would be able to
make as a Board Director. Please also identify any activities indicating
a dedication and commitment to issues of importance to the Asian
Pacific American community.

On June 13, the Asian American Law Fund of New York and the Asian American Bar Association of New York held their 2013 Summer Reception at Edwards Wildman’s New York office.

At this annual event, AALFNY presents the recipients of the Community Service Scholarship Awards. This year’s recipients were: Lucy Zhang, Duke ‘15, interning with New York Legal Assistance Group’s Total Life Choices department; Mieon Han (Fordham ’14), interning with MinKwon Center for Community Action. Also present was Nabila Taj, this year’s recipient of the AALFNY SABANY Public Interest Fellowship, interning at Queens Legal Services.

Also in attendance were many interns from this year’s class of the Joint Minority Bar Judicial Internship Program, co-sponsored by AALFNY, AABANY, the Metropolitan Black Bar Association, Black Bar Association of Bronx County, Puerto Rican Bar Association and the South Asian Bar Association of New York.

The special honoree was Glenn Lau-Kee, past President of AABANY and the President-elect of NYSBA, the first Asian American to hold that position. In June 2014, Glenn will take his place as the first Asian American President of NYSBA.

We thank all the contributors for making it possible for AALFNY and AABANY to support the scholarship fund and the JMB JIP. Thanks to all the attendees who came and helped make this year’s summer reception enjoyable and successful.
