Congratulations to James R. Cho and Linda S. Lin on Being Honored with the 2019 CUP Law Catalysts Award

AABANY is proud to announce that last week James R. Cho, Immediate Past President and Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of NY, and Linda S. Lin, Past President 2011 and Vice President and Assistant General Counsel at QBE North America, were presented with the 2019 CUP Law Catalysts award at the Council of Urban Professionals (CUP) 10th Annual Lawyers Forum and Law Catalyst Recognition Ceremony. The ceremony was held at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP on November 12, 2019.

The CUP Law Catalyst award honors and celebrates the accomplishments of diverse legal professionals who are achieving extraordinary professional success while making significant and impactful contributions to their community.

James and Linda’s dedication to promoting diversity in the legal profession, their leadership as Past Presidents at AABANY, and service to the overall Asian American community make them highly deserving and outstanding recipients of this recognition.

CUP Fellows Program Applications Open Now

The CUP Fellows Program is a transformative, one-year leadership development experience for early-to-mid career professionals of color across industries, who are deeply committed to supporting their communities through impactful contributions to the nonprofit and public sectors. All purpose-driven professionals of color are encouraged to apply.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Professionals of color across all industries and sectors with 5-10 years of professional work experience.
  • Applicants must be employed full-time in the New York tristate area at the time of application and must plan to remain employed throughout the fellowship. Internships and part-time positions do not meet this requirement.
  • Applicants must not participate in another significant program at the same time as the CUP Fellows Program, which runs from February 2019 through December 2019.
  • Applicants must commit to attending the monthly workshops.

Click here to apply. Please complete the application submission instructions by November 11, 2018. Essay and Statement of Intent should not exceed 500 words. Only complete applications will be considered for the program. Incomplete or late applications will be ineligible. Please note the following guidelines.

  • Resume should be 1-2 pages long, and not exceed 2 pages. Include experience demonstrating your commitment to public service.
  • Statement of Intent should describe how you intend on contributing to your community in the short and long term and how the CUP Fellows Program will help you achieve your aspirations. 
  • Essay should describe a specific activity or organization in which you were directly involved as a leader. What challenges did you face, how did you resolve them, and what did you learn about yourself in the process? 
  • Letter of Recommendation should speak to your personal and professional accomplishments, civic engagement, and commitment to community. Must be 1 page and submitted with your application.

2018 CUP Fellows Program Details | CUPUSA | Council of Urban Professionals

The  CUP Fellows Program is a transformative, one-year leadership development experience for early-to-mid career professionals of color across sectors who are deeply committed to supporting their communities through impactful contributions to the nonprofit and public sectors. 

The CUP Fellows Program workshops and speakers provide participants with insight into the challenges and opportunities in the civic sector, and encourages participants to harness their power and relationships to create meaningful change, through board service, political engagement, volunteerism, public-private partnerships, etc.

The target participant profile includes self-motivated professionals of color from all sectors (public, private and nonprofit) with 5-10 years of professional work experience, a demonstrated commitment to public service, and a desire to acquire new skills and information to maximize their civic impact.

AUSTIN SO – CATALYST SPOTLIGHT

Our very own In-Hounse Counsel Committee Co-Chair Austin So has been profiled by the Council of Urban Professionals in their Catalyst Spotlight. Austin’s commitment to diversity and inclusion has made us all proud. You can read more about what Austin has to say by clicking the link in the title.

Among other things, he shares his practical advice for young people who want their careers to make an impact:

Network constantly in all directions – up, down, sideways, in and out.  And find a way to help someone else in some small way, every day.

Jean Lee – Catalyst Spotlight

Jean Lee – Catalyst Spotlight

Congratulations to AABANY’s very own Jean Lee for being featured as a Catalyst Spotlight on the Council of Urban Professionals (CUP) website! 

Jean served as AABANY President from 2012-2013 and currently sits on the AABANY Board of Directors. 

CUP interviewed Jean and asked her about the challenges she has faced in this profession, proudest achievements, and leaders that she looks up to. 

“What is your proudest achievement?
My proudest professional achievement is in two parts: (i) being a lawyer for JPMorgan Chase & Co.; and (ii) winning several Daubert motions against very senior partners when I was a mid-level associate. They are my proudest moments because it was so unexpected and unlikely.”

Jean also credits much of her success to having mentors in her. Seeing the value and benefits of mentorship, she currently mentors students and young lawyers.
