First Korean American Elected to Bench in NY
As many know, AABANY is tremendously proud of our new Judge Judy Kim, the first Korean American elected to a judicial position in New York. She is a wonderful role model. Her appointment made the front page of the New York Law Journal on November 10, 2016.
She stated,
“Being the ‘first,’ I feel a tremendous responsibility to be the best judge I can be, because I know that I will be serving as a role model to many younger attorneys in the Korean American community,” she said in an email. “I hope that my election serves as an inspiration to other attorneys like me.”
AABANY President Susan Shin was also quoted in the article.
Asian American bar president Susan Shin issued a statement saying Kim’s election “brings us one step closer to a bench that reflects the diversity of New York City.”

Asian American Bar Association of New York Congratulates Judy Kim on Becoming the First Korean American Elected to a Judicial Position in the State of New York
NEW YORK – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) congratulates Judy H. Kim on being elected to the New York Civil Court bench in the 4th Municipal Court District. Ms. Kim has made history as the first Korean American elected to the bench in New York.
Ms. Kim is associate counsel in the Bureau & Estates Litigation Section of the Legal Division at the New York Liquidation Bureau. The Bureau is a unique 100-year old quasi-state agency that assists the Superintendent of Financial Services of the State of New York in his capacity as receiver of insolvent insurance companies. Prior to joining the Bureau, Ms. Kim worked at Snitow Kanfer Holtzer & Millus, LLP as an attorney focusing on commercial litigation, employment discrimination litigation, and matrimonial litigation matters. Ms. Kim received her J.D. from Tulane Law School, and her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.
Ms. Kim has been a long time member of AABANY, has served on our board, and has co-chaired various AABANY committees. We are pleased to announce that our member Judy Kim has been elected to serve on the New York Civil Court (4th Municipal Court District). Ms. Kim is the first Korean American elected to a judicial position in the State of New York. Currently, Ms. Kim is an associate counsel in the Legal Division at the New York Liquidation Bureau (Liquidation Bureau). Ms. Kim holds or has held various other non-profit board positions. Currently, she is a board member of the Korean American League for Civic Action (KALCA), and the Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert (JALBCA). She has been a board member of or held various leadership roles within a number of other organizations, including the Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York, the Asian American Bar Association of New York, the New York City Bar Association, and the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA). On Thursday, August 8, AABANY held the third in its series of “Get to Know AABANY” Happy Hours for 2013, this time co-sponsored by the Judiciary, Young Lawyers and Membership Committees. Many members and friends gathered at O’Nieals on Grand Street, near Chinatown, to connect, re-connect and make new connections. The first thirty that came to O’Nieals got a free drink. Light appetizers were passed around for those in our party.
Among those in attendance were Judiciary Committee Co-Chairs Theo Cheng and James Chou, and Young Lawyers Committee Co-Chair Liz Mo. Judy Kim, Chair of the Membership Committee attended. Also there was Michael Yim, candidate for NAPABA Vice President of Programs and Operations, handing out campaign stickers that had his name and Han Choi’s name on them. Han Choi is candidate for NAPABA President-elect. Both Han and Michael received AABANY’s endorsement in the NAPABA election.

NEW YORK – November 20, 2012 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) congratulates our own Executive Officer, Judy Kim, on her election as NAPABA’S Northeast Regional Governor.
Judy H. Kim is an associate counsel in the Bureau & Estates Litigation Section of the Legal Division at the New York Liquidation Bureau. The Bureau is a unique 100 year old quasi-state agency that assists the Superintendent of Financial Services of the State of New York in his capacity as receiver of insolvent insurance companies. She has been with the Bureau since 2008. During that time, she has been involved in all aspects of litigation involving the Superintendent and the estates in his receivership. From December 2010 through June 2011, Ms. Kim was interim Section Chief of the Bureau & Estates Litigation Section. Prior to joining the Bureau, Ms. Kim worked at Snitow Kanfer Holtzer & Millus, LLP as an attorney focusing on commercial litigation, employment discrimination litigation, and matrimonial litigation matters.
