KALAGNY’s Annual Holiday Party
KALAGNY’s 2012 Holiday Party will take place at MK Karaoke Lounge in the heart of Koreatown. This year’s party will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, from 6-9 p.m. We have reserved the entire lounge for our special, private event, so we hope you will join us as we ring in the holidays. We will provide delicious finger food and unlimited karaoke in both private rooms as well as the main lounge. This free event is open to KALAGNY members and guests (non-lawyers are encouraged to attend). We look forward to celebrating with you while looking forward to another great year of KALAGNY events.

Post-Sandy Recovery Efforts – Volunteers Needed For Friday’s Pro Bono Clinic

We know this has been a difficult time for many of you. We hope you and your family are safe and are recovering post Sandy.
KALAGNY invites volunteer attorneys to make a difference in the lives of those adversely affected by Sandy. Along with other social service providers, we will hold a pro bono “clinic” this Friday, November 9, 2012, from 1-6 p.m. at the Korean American Association of Greater New York (149 West 24th Street, 6th Fl. in Manhattan) (map). No specialized legal experience is necessary. A training session and lunch will be served at noon at the same location prior to the clinic.
At the clinic, KALAGNY and its partner organizations will provide legal support to individuals and businesses that may be facing homelessness, unemployment, medical exigencies, business interruption, or a combination of the foregoing. We are seeking 1-2 bilingual (i.e., Korean) volunteers for an information table at the Clinic. Please e-mail [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering by Wednesday November 7, 2012.

Pro Bono Training
An estimated 100,000 undocumented Asian immigrants are eligible for “Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals” (DACA). A new Department of Homeland Security directive, DACA gives eligible undocumented youth a two-year pause from the threat of deportation and an opportunity to secure a work permit. For many, this will be the first opportunity to legally work and live in this country.
Many of these immigrants are from the communities served by the various Asian bar associations of New York. Taking on a DACA case pro bono is a discrete way to learn basic immigration law and impact the life of undocumented youth.
The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) is seeking pro bono counsel to represent eligible young people applying for DACA. No prior legal experience is required, but pro bono counsel will be required to attend a training prior to taking a case. These cases will help support the work of AALDEF’s youth group for undocumented Asian Americans.

KALAGNY Announces $1000 Law Student Scholarship
KALAGNY is currently seeking submission of applications from its law student members for the second annual KALAGNY Law Student Scholarship Award in the amount of $1000 which will be presented to the winning law student member at KALAGNY’s upcoming 26th Anniversary Gala on Monday, June 4, 2012, at the Harvard Club in New York City. The scholarship will be given to the law student member who has demonstrated the most outstanding commitment to and support for the Korean American community in Greater New York and who exhibits dedication to use his/her legal knowledge and skills to continue this commitment and support. The scholarship will be awarded based on merit. Applications are due Friday, May 18, 2012. Click here for details.
Women in Law Connect on May 3
On Thursday, May 3, 2012, over fifty women participated in the “Women in Law Connect” networking event, co-sponsored by the Women’s Committees of AABANY, SABANY, MBBA, and KALAGNY. Women exchanged business cards over shrimp cocktails and drinks at the chic AVA Lounge in mid-Manhattan. Attendees included general counsels, associates at private law firms, solo practitioners, consultants, and public interest and government attorneys. Attendees were enthusiastic about the opportunity to network and share their knowledge and experience.
The event, an initiative of AABANY Women’s Committee Co-chair Liza Sohn, linked together women’s committees of four co-sponsoring bar associations. The effort was led by Liza Sohn and Vinny Lee, AABANY Women’s Committee Co-chairs, Lisa Khandhar, SABANY Women’s Committee Co-chair, Shannon Chang Hanson, KALAGNY Women’s Committee Co-chair, Nadine Fontaine, Metropolitan Black Bar Association (MBBA) president-elect, and Verena Powell, board member of the MBBA.
