On October 18, 2006, the AABANY LGBT Committee co-hosted, with NQAPIA, the LGBT Asian American/South Asian Attorney Reception. More than seventy guests attended from law firms, in-house, public interest and government practices. Along with numerous sponsors, the law firm of Baker & McKenzie in New York graciously hosted the event, and Jonathan Stevens, a partner in the firm’s Tax Practice Group, warmly welcomed all attendees. Justice Doris Ling-Cohan of the Appellate Term, First Department, a trailblazer and the first Asian American woman elected to the Supreme Court in New York, gave moving keynote remarks. NQAPIA president Glenn Magpantay introduced and showed a short film featuring Asian and South Asian American parents expressing their support for their LGBT children.
Many attendees expressed excitement about the LGBT Committee of AABANY and wanted to learn more about participating. For more information, check out information on the LGBT Committee and email John Vang at [email protected] or Glenn Magpantay at [email protected].
