Chief Judge Dora L. Irizarry is pleased to announce that Sanket Bulsara was appointed today as United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York.  A formal investiture ceremony will be held in the near future.

Judge Bulsara is the first South Asian-American to serve as a judge within the Second Circuit.  Before his appointment, Judge Bulsara briefly served as Acting General Counsel of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) after serving as Deputy General Counsel for Appellate Litigation, Adjudication, and Enforcement in the SEC.  Previously, Judge Bulsara was a partner at the firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP (2012 – 2015) and Counsel and Associate at the firm (2005 – 2011), where he litigated complex commercial matters and defended Fortune 500 companies and individuals in white collar investigations.  Judge Bulsara also served as lead counsel in numerous pro bono matters, including prisoner rights cases and a Hague Convention child abduction matter that garnered him the Sanctuary for Families Above and Beyond Award for pro bono service in 2013 and 2014.  While at WilmerHale, he served as a Special Kings County Assistant District Attorney.  He successfully tried felony and misdemeanor cases and received an outstanding service award.

From 2004 – 2005, Judge Bulsara was Manager of Planning and Data Analysis at the New York City Department of Education.  From October 2003 – September 2004, he was an associate in the litigation department of the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olsen, LLP.

Judge Bulsara received an A.B. degree in Social Studies from Harvard College, graduating magna cum laude in 1998.  He graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2002, after which he clerked for the Hon. John G. Koeltl, U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York.

While born in the Bronx to immigrant parents from India, Judge Bulsara is a son of the Eastern District.  He has resided in Queens for many years and has been an active member of his community.

On behalf of all the magistrate judges in the Eastern District, Chief Magistrate Judge Roanne L. Mann is delighted that Judge Bulsara will be joining our bench as a colleague and friend.

Chief Judge Irizarry stated: “We are thrilled to welcome Judge Bulsara into the Eastern District family.  Judge Bulsara was chosen by the Board of Judges from among five highly qualified and stellar candidates recommended by the Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Committee composed of members of the Bar and citizens of the Eastern District.  Judge Bulsara has outstanding credentials and experience. We have no doubt that he will make significant contributions to the administration of justice as is the tradition of the Eastern District bench.”
