On November 11, 2014, the Intellectual Property Committees of the Asian American Bar Association of New York (that’s us!), the Metropolitan Black Bar Association, the Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York, and the Sports Law Committee of the New York City Bar Association presented a special inter-bar panel and networking event: “Women in Sports Law: Tips for Breaking into Industry,” hosted at the Classic Car Club and sponsored by Merrill Lynch.
MBBA IP & Technology Committee Co-Chair Jessica Lee (Associate, Loeb & Loeb LLC) moderated Kari Cohen (Vice President & Associate General Counsel, Brooklyn Nets & Barclays Center) and Guiselle Torres (Legal Counsel, Major League Soccer). Introductory remarks regarding women’s increasing role in the corporate America were given by Jimmy Quan of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management.
Among vintage car models over cocktails and sushi, women attorneys from across our different bar associations mixed, mingled, and connected over the exciting prospects of the specialized and growing field of sports law. Experts Kari and Guiselle shared their personal experiences, provided their specific insight in this field, and underscored the importance of building lasting connections throughout one’s professional life regardless of career path. The event was attended by over 50 women.
Thank you to our outstanding and talented panelists and moderator, Jimmy Quan and Merrill Lynch for sponsoring, our fellow presenting bar associations – the MBBA, KALAGNY, and NYCBA – who collaborated to make this event a success, Classic Car Club for hosting, our IP Committee Co-Chairs Stacy Wu and Jenny Lee for handling logistics on our end, Shannon Zhu for volunteering at the event, and all those who attended. This must have been the most classically cool event that AABANY has had in quite some time.
