NAPABA Press Release: Jacqueline Nguyen and John Lee Confirmed

Jacqueline Nguyen Confirmed as First-Ever Asian Pacific American Female Federal Appellate Court Judge; John Z. Lee Also Confirmed For Federal District Court in Illinois
WASHINGTON – Today, the Senate voted overwhelmingly to confirm Judge Jacqueline H. Nguyen to be a Circuit Court Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and also confirmed John Z. Lee to serve on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Judge Nguyen is the first-ever Asian Pacific American female to serve as a federal appellate court judge anywhere in the nation. Judge Lee is only the second Asian Pacific American to serve as an Article III judge in Illinois.

AABANY APPLAUDS SELECTION OF DON H. LIU AS A 2012 NEW YORK CITY BAR DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION CHAMPION AWARD HONOREE
NEW YORK – May 9, 2012 – The Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”) applauds the selection of Don H. Liu as one of the 2012 New York City Bar Diversity Champion Award Honorees.
The New York City Bar’s Enhance Diversity in the Profession Committee will the presenting the Seventh Annual Diversity Champion Award at an Award Ceremony and Luncheon on June 5th, 2012. The award recognizes the critical role individual attorneys have played in initiating and sustaining change within their organizations and the overall New York legal community. The award recipients embody the New York City Bar’s Statement of Diversity Principles, which defines diversity as an inclusive concept, encompassing race, color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, nationality, age, disability and marital and parental status.
”AABANY is extremely excited and pleased that the New York City Bar has chosen Don Liu as an honoree and recipient of the Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award,” said Jean Lee, AABANY’s President. “Don has been a life-long champion and fighter for Asian Americans and other under-represented groups, not just in the corporate sector but in all aspects of life and society. His track record on diversity reaches out across generations of lawyers and individuals to advance and promote the values and goals of diversity, in the legal profession and beyond. We are fortunate and privileged to count him as a dedicated friend of AABANY and its mission to increase diversity in the legal profession. Don H. Liu is Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Xerox Corporation, where he is responsible for all of Xerox’s legal and government affairs. Throughout his career Mr. Liu has been committed to increasing the hiring, retention and promotion of diverse attorneys. This commitment is reflected in his stewardship of Xerox’s legal department and in his leadership and involvement in national and regional diversity organizations. He is an active member and former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association and is the Vice Chairman of the Asian American Diversity Advisory Council for Comcast Corporation. He also served as the Chair of the In-House Counsel Committee of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), which honored him with their ICON Award and Trailblazer Award. He most recently is the recipient of the Leadership Award by the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) and the Legacy Diversity Award by the American Bar Association’s Council on Legal Education Opportunity.

Women in Law Connect on May 3
On Thursday, May 3, 2012, over fifty women participated in the “Women in Law Connect” networking event, co-sponsored by the Women’s Committees of AABANY, SABANY, MBBA, and KALAGNY. Women exchanged business cards over shrimp cocktails and drinks at the chic AVA Lounge in mid-Manhattan. Attendees included general counsels, associates at private law firms, solo practitioners, consultants, and public interest and government attorneys. Attendees were enthusiastic about the opportunity to network and share their knowledge and experience.
The event, an initiative of AABANY Women’s Committee Co-chair Liza Sohn, linked together women’s committees of four co-sponsoring bar associations. The effort was led by Liza Sohn and Vinny Lee, AABANY Women’s Committee Co-chairs, Lisa Khandhar, SABANY Women’s Committee Co-chair, Shannon Chang Hanson, KALAGNY Women’s Committee Co-chair, Nadine Fontaine, Metropolitan Black Bar Association (MBBA) president-elect, and Verena Powell, board member of the MBBA. Join SCAAAB for its Fourth Annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration: One World, Many Cultures. This celebration promotes cultural awareness of the Asian Pacific American communities and celebrate the diversity of Long Island’s population, and is held at Stony Brook University’s Charles B. Wang Center.
Featured are a multicultural booth display, arts and crafts, costumes, dance, featured presentations, photo exhibit, tea ceremony, vendor and corporate displays and workshops. There are multicultural dance and musical performance, open theater, Presentation of Awards for Distinguished Asian Americans individuals and Awarding Ceremonies for the Social Harmony contest.

Celebrate APA Heritage Month with AABANY
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and AABANY is celebrating in a variety of ways:
- May 9 – Pro Bono and Community Service Committee Meeting at Perlman and Perlman, starting at 7 pm.
- May 11 – Society of Asian Federal Officers 21st Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet at Jing Fong, starting at 6 pm; AABANY member Pamela Chen, Chief, Civil Rights Section, Criminal Division, US Attorney’s Office, Easter District of New York, being honored as Prosecutor of the Year.
- May 12 – 33rd Annual Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Festival at DUMBO, starting at 11 am. AABANY and KALAGNY will have a table at the event. It is a free, family-friendly event and the weather is supposed to be great this weekend, so come out and join us.
- May 14 – APA Heritage Month Celebration at the Kings County District Attorney’s Office co-sponsored by AABANY.
- May 14 – Hon. Jeffrey K. Oing, Justice of the Supreme Court, State of New York (and long-time AABANY member), will be speaking at Kramer Levin’s APA Heritage Month Celebration, at Kramer Levin’s midtown Manhattan office. RSVP required by May 10.
- May 16 – MOCA Community of Heroes Celebration at Golden Unicorn, starting at 6 pm. AABANY is taking seats there, and if you’d like to join us at a 50% subsidized rate, contact yang.chen@aabany.org.
- May 17 – AABANY’s IP Committee presents: Intellectual Property Ethics for In-House Counsel CLE, starting at 7 pm at Kalow & Springut; free for AABANY members, 1.5 ethics credits available.
- May 18 – Asian American Journalists Association of New York hosts a Trivia Bowl, at ABC News Studios, starting at 6 pm. Juju Chang will be the MC, and AABANY is fielding a team. Sitting New York APA judges will be serving as judges for the event.
- May 18-20 – NYSBA Commercial and Federal Litigation Section Spring Meeting, in association with the Young Lawyers Section, at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York. Past President and current Judiciary Committee Co-Chair James Chou will be speaking on Sunday morning on the panel entitled, “Your Path Through the Court and to the Bench: What You Need to Know to Get Through a Day in Court.”
- May 22, Asian American Arts Alliance (a4), Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) and AABANY present: “Revisiting Vincent: The Legacy of the Vincent Chin Case 30 Years Later,” a re-enactment of the Vincent Chin trial, with introduction and talkback led by Hon. Denny Chin and Dean Frank Wu, at New York Law School, starting at 6:30 pm. Tickets now available for purchase in advance.
- May 23 – AABANY’s Government and Public Sector Committee presents a CLE program entitled “Everyday Ethics for the Government & Public Sector Attorney,” to be held at Friedman Kaplan Seiler & Adelman, starting at 6 pm. Free for AABANY members with 2.0 ethics CLE credits available.
- May 24 – AABANY’s Litigation Committee hosts a Happy Hour at the Hill on 29th and Third Ave., starting at 6:30 pm. Meet and mingle with members of the Litigation Committee.
- May 24 – AALDEF’s Young Professionals Committee and Cadwalder Wickersham & Taft host a screening of the documentary “Sing Your Song,” about Harry Belafonte and his role in fighting for civil rights for all Americans. AALDEF Staff Attorney Jerry Vattamala will take part in a Q&A after the screening and discuss the legacy of Harry Belafonte’s activism and its meaning for today’s generation.
- May 30 – AABANY joins the Asian American Law Fund of New York (AALFNY) in hosting the Annual Summer Reception, open to the legal community and law students. It will take place at Edwards Wildman Palmer starting at 6 pm, and there is no cost to attend but RSVP is required by May 25.
- May 31 – June 2: NAPABA Eastern Super Regional Conference, hosted by APALA-NJ at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. Many AABANY members and leaders will be there, speaking on panels and reconnecting with NAPABA friends. Registration now open.

Using AABANY’s CLE credit for New Jersey MCLE
Members know that one of AABANY’s best benefits is our New York-accredited CLE programs, which are free or deeply discounted versus what are available elsewhere. What you may not know is that you may use our credit earned in New York to satisfy your New Jersey bar requirements at the same time on a 1 to 1 credit hour reciprocal basis. (NJ BOLE Reg. 201:4) There are a few exceptions: attorneys in their first year in NJ have to take 5 courses out of 9 New Jersey-specific topics that we do not offer, and attorney presenters that earn triple credit in New York only count for double credit in New Jersey. Don’t miss out on taking care of both your NY and NJ CLE requirements at the same time!
