NAPABA 2018 Officer Election Results and New Call for Nominations

NAPABA congratulates the newly-elected officers of the NAPABA Board of Governors for the 2018-19 board year. They will be sworn into office at the 30th Anniversary Gala during the 2018 NAPABA Convention in Chicago, IL.
The following individuals were elected by the NAPABA membership:

  • President-Elect | Bonnie Lee Wolf
  • Vice President for Finance and Development | Courtney Fong*
  • Vice President for Membership | Alen Hsu
  • Vice President for Programs and Operations | Charles Jung
  • Vice President for Communications | Avanti Bakane
  • Treasurer | Gary Zhao
  • Secretary | Jeffrey Javinar

*Courtney Fong has withdrawn his candidacy to be Vice President for Finance and Development. You can read a statement from him here. As a result, the Nominating and Elections Committee is accepting nominations for election as the Vice President for Finance and Development of the NAPABA Board of Governors for the 2018-19 term. Submit a nomination here by October 22 at 5 PM. The updated Elections Timeline for this position is included below.

– Oct. 22, 2018: Nominations may be submitted until 5pm ET/2pm PT
– Oct. 24, 2018: Vice President for Finance and Development candidates announced and endorsements accepted
– Oct. 25, 2018: Election ballot will be distributed to eligible voters by email on this date (Members must have joined or renewed by July 1, 2018, to be eligible to vote.)
– Nov. 1, 2018: Candidate endorsements may continue to be submitted until 12pm ET/9am PT on this date. Votes must be cast by 9pm ET/6pm PT on this date in order to be counted
– Nov. 2, 2018: Election results will be announced.

Board of Governors – National Asian Pacific American Bar Association

NAPABA congratulates the newly-appointed at-large members and regional governors of the NAPABA Board of Governors for the 2016-18 bar years. They will be sworn into office at the 28th Anniversary Gala during the 2016 NAPABA Convention in San Diego.  

The following individuals were appointed by the NAPABA Board of Governors:

  • Barbara Lum of Thompson Hine LLP
  • Gary Zhao of SmithAmundsen LLC

Barbara and Gary join Charles Jung and Joseph Lee to make up the four at-large board members.

The following individuals were selected by their respective regions to serve as regional governors for two-year terms:

  • Rahat Babar of the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General | Northeast Region
  • Avanti Bakane of Gordon & Rees LLP | Central Region
  • Dainen N. Penta of Leahy Fjelstad Peryea | Northwest Region
  • Brian S. Sun of Hologic Inc. | Southern California Region
  • David Mesa of Sedgwick LLP | Northern California Region

*Felix Woo was incorrectly listed in the previous version. Felix was selected to be the Central California Regional Governor in 2015 and will continue to serve in that capacity in the next bar year.

NAPABA SEEKS AT-LARGE BOARD MEMBER CANDIDATES

Deadline | Thursday, Sept. 1 at 8 p.m. EDT

The NAPABA Board of Governors will appoint two At-Large Board Members to each serve a two-year term beginning with the 2016-17 bar year. The NAPABA Nominating and Elections Committee invites all members in good standing to apply to be At-Large Board Members by submitting a statement of interest and completing a short demographic survey before 8 p.m. EDT on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016.

NAPABA’s Nominating and Elections Committee (the “Committee”) is pleased to present for your consideration the following officer candidates for the 2016-17 bar year:

The Committee has approved candidates who not only have demonstrated leadership capabilities, but more importantly, have also seriously considered their goals for NAPABA, the challenges and opportunities they see facing NAPABA in the coming year, and how they envision moving NAPABA forward. Each candidate has set forth his/her vision for NAPABA in a personal statement.

Endorsements

NAPABA believes that the active participation of members, affiliates, and national associates is essential to a vibrant and progressive organization and encourages the engagement of its members in the nomination and election process. To facilitate the involvement of members and related entities, NAPABA provides an endorsement process by which members can inform one another about candidate qualifications and support candidates through endorsements, advertisements, articles, and other means. Any eligible individual, affiliate, national associate, or other entity (except for the current members of the Committee and NAPABA staff) may endorse any candidate. Further, although no individual member of the Committee shall officially endorse any candidate, the Committee member may provide information regarding any candidate. Candidate materials, including candidate statements, may contain a list of endorsements.

NAPABA At-Large Board Members Appointed

NAPABA congratulates two members appointed to serve as at-large board members of the NAPABA Board of Governors during the 2015-17 board years: Charles H. Jung, of Nassiri & Jung LLP, in San Francisco; and Joe Lee, of Microsoft, in Seattle.

Each year, two at-large members are selected to the Board of Governors in
recognition of the growth of Asian Pacific American attorneys in North
America and the desire to have diverse and inclusive representation on
the NAPABA Board of Governors.

Charles and Joe will be sworn into office at the 27th Anniversary Gala held on Nov. 7, 2015, during the 2015 NAPABA Convention in New Orleans.

Vice President for Programs and Operations: Pankit J. Doshi

AABANY congratulates the newly-elected officers of the NAPABA Board of Governors for the 2014-2015 board year. They were sworn into office at the Installation Banquet held on November 8, 2014, during the 26th Annual NAPABA Convention in Scottsdale, AZ.

The following individuals were elected by the NAPABA membership:

  • President Elect: Jin Y. Hwang
  • Vice President for Finance and Development: Alexander M. Lee
  • Vice President for Membership: Brad Yamauchi
  • Vice President for Programs and Operations: Lloyd Costales
  • Vice President for Communications: Cyndie M. Chang
  • Treasurer: Pankit J. Doshi
  • Secretary: Tacie H. Yoon

In addition to these newly-elected officers, George C. Chen will serve as President and William J. Simonitsch will serve as Immediate Past President. Joining the officers on the NAPABA Board of Governors will be ten regional governors and four at-large board members.
